Micromanagement doesn’t usually look dramatic.

It looks like drag.

Decision-making slows.
 - Leaders become bottlenecks.
- Initiative drops.
 - High performers disengage quietly.

It often starts with this belief:
 “If I don’t stay on top of everything, it could fall apart.”

In volatile environments, that feels responsible.

But when leaders centralize control, thinking stops spreading.

The organizations that outperform in uncertainty don’t eliminate anxiety.
They manage it internally so it doesn’t leak into behavior.

That’s the difference between control and leadership.

Standards don’t collapse overnight.
They slip — one small approval at a time.

“We can fix it later.”
 “It’s close enough.”
 “Let’s not slow things down.”

In isolation, that feels practical.
In repetition, it becomes cultural.

Teams don’t calibrate to what leaders declare.
They calibrate to what leaders tolerate.

And tolerance, repeated, becomes the new baseline.
The most dangerous standards drift isn’t loud.

It’s quiet approval.

Organizations invest heavily in defining culture.
