Don’t take clients that won’t pay you something up front.


I learned this lesson early on in my still young legal career.

The clients who don’t pay, ask the most of you and will be the most likely to make your life miserable. (There may be exceptions for certain contingency cases).

Now, I have my minimum retainer and if someone isn’t willing to pay it I happily refer the to other attorneys who might be a better fit. 

In the words of Marco Brown : don’t let clients steal from your family.

In my humble opinion, landlords (especially residential landlords) have way to much power in negotiations with tenants.

Most residential tenants don’t have an attorney to review their lease, they might be desperate to find a place to live, and the tenant may not know anything about their rights.

If you represent residential landlords, change my mind.

If you are a tenant with a bad story, I want to hear it!
