On the government side, I’ve pioneered social impact projects valued at $4B+ aligned with the UN SDGs for government leaders like the Presidents of Cyprus & Chile, and the Prime Minister of Pakistan – including initiatives in SDG 6 (Clean Water), SDG 8 (Decent Work) & SDG 13 (Climate Action).

I was pleased to see the UK House of Lords session on AI & Mental Health/Neurodiversity; a topic close to my heart and central to my work with the APPG AI. I would have valued being in the room, but I was unfortunately committed to Cabinet-level meetings in Africa and South Asia.

The real question isn’t whether AI can help in mental health. It’s where it must not be allowed to substitute human duty of care!

Three practical guardrails I believe we need:
1. Clinical-grade validation (real outcomes, not engagement metrics), including neurodivergent and culturally diverse cohorts.
2. Clear escalation pathways: when risk rises, the system must hand off to a clinician early, not after harm.
3. Auditability + recourse: if AI influences assessment or triage, patients must be able to challenge decisions and be heard.

AI can support access and continuity, but it cannot carry moral accountability. In this space, the real test isn’t performance on a good day but how safely the system fails on a bad one!

Truth has a cost.

For most of history, lying was expensive: you needed access, printing presses, influence.
Now a teenager with a laptop can manufacture a convincing universe by lunch.

The danger is more than "deepfakes." It’s an economic shift:
👉 the cost of producing convincing falsehoods → near zero
👉 the cost of verifying reality → keeps rising
👉 the result → truth becomes a luxury product

This is an epistemic crisis, not a content-moderation debate.
Responsible AI needs "truth infrastructure":
🔸 provenance that travels with content,
🔸 friction for virality,
🔸 cheap verification,
🔸 penalties for industrial-scale deception.

A society can survive disagreement.
It can’t survive unpriced fraud at scale.

There’s a quiet kind of harm that doesn’t bruise the body.
It bruises the story.

A model decides you’re a fraud. A recruiter’s filter decides you’re not “culture fit.” A risk score decides you’re “unstable.”
And the world treats that verdict as knowledge!

This is epistemic violence: when an institution’s way of knowing becomes a weapon.

The scary part isn’t that models make mistakes. Humans make mistakes too.
The scary part is mistakes with authority, errors that scale, ossify, and become difficult to appeal.

Responsible AI isn’t “accuracy.” It’s:
👉 Fallibility with humility
👉 Decisions with recourse
👉 Predictions with limits

If a system can harm you, it must also be able to be wrong, in a way you can prove.

Where do we still allow “computer says no” to masquerade as truth?

A book is still my favourite cognitive tool. Quiet. Honest. Slow enough to let understanding catch up.

But here’s the tension: modern complexity is moving faster than human cognition was built to handle; and that gap is becoming the bottleneck. 

That’s why we’re building MetaBrain Labs: a platform for safe, ethical, scalable cognitive enhancement, at the intersection of neuroscience, AI, and secure digital infrastructure. 

And to be crystal clear about the intent: this is not treatment but rather augmentation which is responsibly engineered. 

What we’re working toward is a full stack:
🔹 a Neural Interface Layer to capture meaningful cognitive signals,
🔹 an AI Cognitive Engine to interpret/optimise cognitive states,
🔹 Cognitive Enhancement Modules (learning, memory, focus, resilience), a safety-bounded MetaBrain OS,
🔹 and a Neural Vault (BNDI) so cognitive identity/ownership stays with the user. 

Because if you’re touching cognition, safety has to be foundational: hard boundaries, user-controlled permissions, full encryption, and no raw thought recording. 

The near-term focus is deliberately non-military, high-impact: accelerated learning, cognitive performance for professionals, memory support and resilience, secure digital identity in an AI-driven world, and cognitive longevity.

We keep asking whether AI will obey us.
The deeper question is whether it should.

A system that always complies is not "aligned." It’s servile; and servility is not a virtue. It’s a failure mode.

The world’s worst atrocities were full of obedient functionaries.

So here’s the uncomfortable twist:
A truly ethical system would sometimes refuse, not because it’s "safe," but because it recognises a boundary:
🔸 "This request degrades a human."
🔸 "This act removes meaningful consent."
🔸 "This outcome violates a duty of care."

This is moral agency simulated through design!

But then the real governance question hits:
🔹 Who sets the moral boundaries?
🔹 Who audits them?
🔹 Who gets to override them, and under what conditions?

If we build machines that can refuse, we’re building machines with moral posture.
