𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝘁.

January 2006. Campus placements.
A Data Analytics company was interviewing.
Final round. The co-founder — an IIT-IIM alumnus — asked me:

👉 “Sales or Consulting?”

I answered instantly: 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴.
To me, Sales meant convincing people. Pushing products. Chasing numbers.
That wasn’t who I thought I was.

He looked at me carefully and said:
“𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀.”

I declined. Just before signing my offer letter, he paused.
“Go speak to someone senior — professor, parents, mentor, friend. Ask them what you should choose. Come back and tell me. Based on that, I’ll release the offer.”

I walked out anxious. Was I about to lose the opportunity?
I spoke to a close friend. He asked me one simple question:
“Are you okay with Sales?”

My answer was clear. “No.”
He said, “Then go back and stick to Consulting. Irrespective of the result.”

I did exactly that.
The co-founder wasn’t happy with my answer.
Instead of rejecting me, he tested me harder —

𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴.

And then he hired me.
We worked together for 3–4 years.
He kept nudging me toward Sales.
I stayed in Delivery.

Fast forward 20 years.
We reconnected after a long time.
He appreciated my growth, my leadership journey, my achievements.
And then he said something unexpected:
“Rajat, you’ve done well. But had you chosen Sales, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱.”

I paused and asked him:
“Why were you so sure about Sales for me?”

His reply changed my perspective.
“Because you stand true to your words. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. You won’t mislead a customer for numbers. That’s the foundation of real Sales.”

That’s when it clicked.
Today, when I design and sell leadership programs…
When I consult businesses…
When I help professionals grow…
It doesn’t feel like selling.

Because I’m not selling for targets.
I’m selling with clarity.
With conviction.
With integrity.

Maybe he saw in me what I was too inexperienced to recognize.
👉 A true leader sees 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.
👉 They see your 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.
👉 And they try to 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗶𝘁.

Sometimes, the people who challenge you the most…
Are the ones who believe in you the most.

Across organisations in Dubai, I see the same pattern.
𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀

Modern BI stacks.
AI pilots running in parallel.
Aligned with the ambition of the UAE National AI Strategy 2031 and the Smart Government vision driven by Smart Dubai.

𝗬𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀, 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹.

Why?
Because tools were upgraded.
But data ownership wasn’t.

In one engagement, I inherited 14 dashboards showing 14 different versions of revenue.

Finance defined revenue one way.
Sales defined it another.
Operations looked at net contribution.
Thus, Leadership meetings became debates — not decisions.

We didn’t start by changing tools.

I’ve seen it repeatedly in Dubai boardrooms.

Finance presents revenue.
Sales challenges it.
Operations pulls up another dashboard.
Marketing says attribution differs.

Suddenly, 45 minutes are gone.
Not one decision made.

The real issue?
𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆.

Let’s take something “simple” like Revenue:

- Does it include VAT or exclude it?
- Are refunds deducted?

Sales sees pipeline and billing velocity.
Operations sees fulfilment revenue.
Marketing sees attributed revenue.

And when this happens:
• Data governance breaks down
• BI dashboards lose trust
• Executives rely on instinct over insight
• AI-driven decision-making becomes impossible

This is not a dashboard problem.

The 5-Step Process to Fix It

1️⃣ Define the Decision First
Before defining a metric, define the decision it supports.
Every KPI must answer: 
“What decision does this influence?”
No decision → no KPI.

2️⃣ Build a Business-Owned Data Dictionary
Not IT-owned. Not consultant-owned.
Every metric must clearly define:
• Formula
• Inclusion/exclusion logic
• Source system
• Owner

One version of the truth. Documented. Approved.

3️⃣ Assign Data Owners (Not Just Data Stewards)
Each metric needs a business owner accountable for its integrity.
When ownership is blurred, meetings become debates.

4️⃣ Align BI Strategy with Commercial KPIs
Dashboards should reflect:
• EBITDA drivers
• Cash flow impact
• Customer acquisition economics
• Operational efficiency metrics

Not vanity metrics. Not clutter.

5️⃣ Shift from Report Delivery to Decision Impact
Measure the analytics function by:
• Decisions influenced
• Revenue improved
• Cost reduced
• Risk mitigated

Not by number of dashboards created.

The UAE is investing heavily in digital infrastructure and AI ambition.
But technology alone won’t accelerate businesses.
Clarity will.

Because this project is not a transportation upgrade.
It’s a time-reallocation engine.

📊 If I Were Measuring Success, Here’s What I’d Track:

That’s 33 minutes reallocated to productivity, family, or health.
And in Dubai’s economy, time has a premium multiplier.

One of the reasons professionals from all over the world feel comfortable working in cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, and Doha is the incredible focus on safety, stability, and governance.

Dubai in particular has built a reputation for:
• Strong law enforcement and rapid emergency response
• Advanced surveillance and public safety infrastructure
• Highly coordinated crisis management systems
• Leadership that consistently prioritizes citizen and resident safety

These systems don’t just operate in good times — they are designed precisely for moments when the world feels uncertain.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲, 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲.

But for many of us, the first thought is not about politics.
It’s about people.
The colleague you worked with for years.
The friend you met for coffee every week.
The partner you built projects with.

War and conflict always remind us of something very simple:
𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱.

My response surprised them.

𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝘅 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁.”

And that changed everything.


📊 Step 1: 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗚𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴.
