You’ve got one shot to show them you’re the solution.

Most people stop preparing once they’ve booked the interview but that’s a mistake.

The real magic happens after you get the invitation.

Here are 3 things to do (if you haven’t already):

1️⃣ Research the company deeply.

Go beyond the website. Understand their mission, current challenges, and the problem they’re hiring you to solve. Review their annual report. 

💡 Ask yourself: “Why does this role exist right now?”

2️⃣ Match your stories to their needs.

Look for “clues” in the job posting that reveal what matters most.

For example:

“The CEO will lead a transformation that elevates member engagement and drives capacity-building initiatives.”

👉 They need a builder and an engager.

Or:

“The Chief Strategy Officer will ensure long-term growth, competitive advantage, and overall success.”

👉 They need a strategic driver of growth.

Craft stories that show how you’ve delivered similar results.

3️⃣ Set your intention and plan your message.

Identify the three to five things you want them to remember about you.

Visualize the outcome. How do you want to feel when they walk out of that room (or log off that screen).

Because confidence doesn’t come from luck, it comes from alignment and preparation.

Job searching is a lot like baking a cake.

You need a recipe to make sure you get the cake you want.

Without a recipe, you go to the market and get a bunch of mismatched ingredients. You also forget to pick up some common ingredients because you're pretty sure you've got them at the back of your cupboards at home. But then you arrive at home, only to realize you don't have all the ingredients you need to bake the cake so you have to go back out to the market and hunt down the missing ingredients.

Job search is similar. Without a recipe for all the ingredients you need, you go out to the marketplace only to wind up with a mix-match of the wrong ingredients. Then you start the process of looking for work all over again because you didn't get it right the first time. 

So what's the recipe for your job search? We each have different recipes. You might include things like: shared values, common interests, a great pay cheque. Someone else might want to include autonomy, decision-making authority and intelligent colleagues. Another person might want job security, great customers and a benefits plan. 

The good news is that you get to build the recipe you want for the "cake" or the job that matches your needs. 

Then (and only then) do you go "shopping" within select industries and companies for the job you want.

Does your job have all the ingredients you need to enjoy the best “cake” you can make? What “ingredients” might be missing?

Most candidates walk away from an interview and just… wait. 

But reflecting on your interview is like having your own secret weapon. 

Debriefing sharpens your answers, boosts confidence, and gets you ready for round two.
