"The Fixer" project manager - Parachuted into failing projects, I helped organizations turn it around reach the finish line. Even though stress, information overload, and team motivation struggles were my constant companions, I salvaged those projects to the end. 

With my project management and management consulting experience spanning over 15+ years across various industries and project types, I became a generalist PM that could enable teams to get it done, but it was at the cost of having to replace the previous project manager.

Two questions lingered with me as I journeyed from engagement to engagement:
1. What am I doing that has made me successful, even though the previous PM had deeper subject-matter-expertise?
2. Where was the support for the previous PM to help them grow and succeed?

The problem is deeper than not having capability. 
It was a matter of leadership and relationships to navigate the challenges. 

As I dived deeper, I found that many PMOs focus on processes and governance, not people. Project managers often face challenges like stakeholder buy-in, communication, team motivation, or even their own capability. These highly sensitive issues are areas that PMs may hesitate to raise for fear of repercussions.  At the same time, organizations will release a project manager for "under-performance", even if it means that the organization will face:
❌ At least 3+ months of project budget burn
❌ Loss of institutional knowledge
❌ A large gap in planning and action during the ramp-down, transition, and ramp-up period
❌ A drop in team morale and unproductive project team
❌ Risk of strategic alignment drift

This led me to create my coaching practice focused on Project Leadership.

Instead of replacing PMs, I empower PMs with the leadership skills to help drive success in an organizations key strategic projects.
I help project managers examine and enhance their leadership approach, emotional intelligence, team building skills, critical thinking, communication, creativity and so much more!

I look forward unlock PMs' potential through introspective discussion, training, and coaching to build their superpowers and and enhance their leadership utility belt.

Wait, is this the natural progression?
Probably not, but it sure makes for an interesting challenge!

I've always enjoyed and admired stand-up comedians and their art.
I figured "Hey, I think I got some good jokes, what if I could get some assistance to help me figure it out?"

So, a couple of years ago, I signed up for a stand-up comedy class. The graduation ceremony was everyone presenting their bit at the show.

I signed up. Got all excited. Told friends.
Then the organizer called and said he needed to postpone.
Fine... what's a couple of months, right?

As the first class approached, he messaged again, and said it needed to be moved out another 4 months.
Now it's getting a little ridiculous...
Ironically, I honestly think he needed a project manager to get it figured out.

Eventually, I said "Screw it, I'll do it myself"

Found an open mic that was welcoming and decided to just jump into the deep-end. During this time, I've learned (and STILL LEARNING) so much about communication, stage presence, and leadership.

Even when things aren't working out the way you planned, ask yourself:
"What's REALLY stopping you?"

When I got the call from Project Management Institute, Washington DC Chapter, Inc to do their closing keynote presentation at their 2025 conference, I panicked. (Who? What? Why me?)

Was I excited? Absolutely!
Did I think I was worthy? Not exactly.

Instead, I was hit by all of these internal questions. Here's a sample:
🚫 Are you good enough to even be a keynote speaker?
🚫 Will they even like the topic you're presenting?
🚫 Is your presentation going to make any kind of impact?
🚫 Are you too goofy to bring that on stage?
🚫 Is this just luck?

I definitely could have spiraled with this thinking.

Here's how I built my anchor to deliver one of my highlights of 2025:

➡️ NAME IT
Spaghetti. Rotini. Macaroni. Fettuccine...
Call it out. Don't pretend it doesn't exist.
Acknowledge it and name that "inpasta".

➡️ COOK IT 
When I usually buy pasta, it's hard from the box.
You gotta soften them in boiling water until it's al dente.
That means for every doubting question I'm asking myself, I have to take a hard examination to boil it down.
I have to take a deeper look and remind myself of my past achievements, my effort, my capabilities, and my determination to cook those hard questions.

➡️ EAT IT
Take action. 
You don't just leave the pasta sitting on the table.
Maybe it's prepping the table, gathering seasoning, making a sauce, plating, and ultimately eating it
The key is to take purposeful action.
For me, any of the outlying questions meant I needed to counteract it by:
- Preparing
- Getting Feedback
- Practicing
- Delivering

It's okay to be you.
It's okay to be a better you.

Are you asking the right questions?
It's one of the areas I love tapping into as a project leadership coach for myself and my clients.

Asking questions allow us to:
→ Explore creativity
→ Expand our options
→ Dive deeper into our thinking

When we find ourselves not asking the right question or not asking the question in the right way, we get:
→ defensiveness
→ subpar answers
→ miscommunication

In my own coaching experience where I was the client, the deep questions have allowed me to build my own clarity.

It gave me the confidence to make a pivot in my career.
It showed me pathways to solving my internal problems.
It provided my own map to the future.

"Asking Powerful Questions" is a presentation I absolutely enjoy giving to audiences to see how they can lead better, not through commands, but by asking questions. Heck, there's even an AI element to it.
