What makes some people love LinkedIn and others exhausted by the thought of it? The things you ponder when out on a walk... I guess it only becomes a problem when you want to use LinkedIn for your business but need a nap as soon as you start thinking about it.

It’s easy for me to say that LinkedIn is fun 😂
Doesn’t mean it’s fun for you. 

I started to think... What makes some people dread LinkedIn, or more content marketing and lead generation?  

That’s not too hard to figure out. 

Most entrepreneurs I meet went into business because they LOVE doing something, creating impact. But they didn’t expect the business side of things, the marketing.

This is the easy part

Most thoughts that make people go a bit ick when thinking about marketing and LinkedIn are easy to dispel. I love figuring out what’s blocking you and then showing you how to use LinkedIn in a way that is comfortable to you.

But feeling exhausted just thinking about LinkedIn...

This happens to people who want to use LinkedIn. Who found a way that's aligned with their values, personality and business. 

I see this exhaustion before even getting started in pretty smart people. (I mean, you gotta be smart to work with me, right?)

It doesn’t matter if you’re a consultant, coach or even marketeer. I’ve seen it happen to people who then beat themselves up about it. Feeling “I should know this”.

So here’s the exhausting bit

Using LinkedIn for organic lead generation isn’t all that hard. And the people I’ve worked with aren’t lazy. Most are more consistent than I am. 

Not sure if it is because they have so much knowledge or whatnot, but they start to overthink. To question everything, to feel they constantly need to make decisions.

THAT is what makes it exhausting!

Fancy this constant dialogue going on in your head: What to post. How often. Does this sound smart enough. Is it too long. Too short. Too salesy. Not salesy enough. What about the hook. How do I get comments. Key message. Target audience. Too specific. Off topic.... And then doing it all again next week.

I see people who can talk passionately about their work all day start to dread putting it out there on LinkedIn.

I spoke with a client recently who said something like, “It’s not the posting that drains me, it’s never knowing if I’m focusing on the right thing.”

To me it’s like... Hey it’s your business. You know what you offer, who you offer it to and what they get out of working with you. What do you mean you don’t know if you’re focusing on the right thing?

But I didn’t say that out loud

We worked through it together. Got clear on a few things and figured out a LinkedIn strategy that got them excited to hop on instead of needing an instant nap.

Which made me realise: most of the exhaustion doesn’t come from LinkedIn itself, but from information overload and losing sight of what works for you.

🧁 What is something that often holds your clients back and feels so easy for you to fix?

🚨 Verification on LinkedIn trains AI. I read an in depth review of verifying through 'persona' the party used in NL and other countries. 

SCARY SHIT. I'm not verifying.

It was timely to see this just after a client asked me about verificationon LinkedIn. 

I'm not a fan. Yes, it weeds out fake accounts, but the verification process is what I'm not a fan of.

When I first moved to Australia, I took any job I could to get local work experience and references.

That year, I worked at two childcare centres. The best in town failed accreditation, while the other scored top marks, even though I knew the care was below standard.

🤷🏽‍♀️How's that possible?

At one centre the babies’ needs guided our daily routines.

We updated paperwork to ensure consistent, safe care, but it wasn’t enough for a full 3-year accreditation.

At the other centre...

At set times, we’d grab a nappy from the basket, find the matching baby and change them.

I couldn't tell you if you’d ask me halfway through if Jenny had been changed. I’d have to check the basket.

🤔 Where would you rather leave your baby?

Think about THAT when wondering why some people haven’t verified their name on LinkedIn.

There are various reasons why people, especially women, go by a name other than their official government ID.

I may be unable to verify my name on my LinkedIn,

BUT I AM ABLE TO:

☑️ know my clients’ businesses inside out
☑️ understand how their values impact their business
☑️ develop strategies that fit their personality and capacity
☑️ remember their ultimate goals and keep them on track
☑️ create clarity when overwhelm threatens
☑️ receive real recommendations that you can check

I even remember if you prefer to use US or UK spelling (or the Oxford comma for heaven’s sake)

🧁 So, who would you rather work with?

The person with a verified name and little else to prove their credibility?

Or someone (whose name might not match their passport) with 170+ LinkedIn recommendations and hundreds of skill endorsements?

🧁 And whilst we're at it, how much credibility does your LinkedIn profile show?

Do you have anonymous quotes – or first name only – on your website?

Or do you have recommendations on your LinkedIn profile where people are just one click from checking the person who wrote them?

Do you have 2-8 endorsements on key skills (how many siblings do you have?) – or enough to make the most sceptical person believe this must be real?

Remember the babies?

Your comment section might be doing more marketing than your content; create converting conversations. #JustSaying

People can’t refer to you if they can’t explain what you do. Your LinkedIn presence needs to make that easy. #JustSaying

When it comes to content, I see coaches and other well-trained professionals worry about dumbing themselves down on LinkedIn. I get it. After all, you put in the time and money to get qualifications and experience.

So when you write from your expertise, you know, share insights, give value, all that stuff you hear you need to do in content marketing… Yeah, you care about nuance and being specific and, and, and

Is it working for you, though? 🤷

Or do your posts turn into lectures? I know you don’t mean to sound like a lecturer on LinkedIn. But ehm, it just sort of… happens.

What I see a lot (especially with smart, experienced business owners) is this urge to get it right in one post. You know, give everything but the kitchen sink:

✔ Add context
✔ Address objections
✔ Explain models or frameworks
✔ Make sure nothing is misunderstood

Before you know it, one LinkedIn post is doing the job of a whole workshop. Which is absolutely ‘giving value’ and is ok every once in a while, but mostly, either people aren't ready for that yet. Or they consume it, use it, and you never see them again.

The tricky bit is that most readers aren’t solution-aware yet. 

How's that for a bit of marketing jargon? Problem aware, solution aware, aware of you… I'll explain that another day. 💡 For now, your ideal client doesn't need the full explanation. They need an entry into your orbit.

The scroll stops when people feel you're talking about what bothers them

So you don't need to simplify your thinking or water down your expertise, you just need to dose it a bit. Social media, LinkedIn, the online space… bite-sized snacks create visibilitea, longer in-depth content comes later for your loyal followers (AKA raving fans).

Five ideas = five posts (see LinkedIn doesn't need to take all day)
One moment of recognition resonates more than the whole framework

Easier said than done, right? 

It’s hard to see in your own writing. With all your knowledge and expertise, everything feels relevant. The risk of information overload is real.

This is why it comes up pretty much every time I review content.

Before you blame LinkedIn or the algorithm or the weather gods for burying your best content... Have a look in the mirror and be honest; isn’t it just your lack of knowledge? Nope, this is not the me before coffee morning bitch, I don’t drink coffee! 

Took me only 10 years to figure this out 😂 Keep reading so it’ll take you just minutes.

As calling you out on your lack of knowledge isn’t nice, I’ll make this post about me, not you. Even though we both know it applies to you too. 🤭 (but we won’t tell anyone)

The first 10 years of my business were hit and miss. Which was fine as a side hustle, less fun when my business became my only source of income. 

I wrote great LinkedIn posts, you know, step-by-step how-to posts. Updates on LinkedIn changes. How to write your profile, set up a LinkedIn company page. Mistakes in asking for recommendations... You name it, I wrote about it.

Good stuff too 🏆

Except... I missed a large part of my ideal audience due to one big, fat knowledge gap. It postponed my first 10K month (yeah, I had one of those) by at least 7 years. OUCH

I didn’t meet people where they were. 

Some business coach had tried to explain this whole buyer journey thing to me, but I only saw corporate mumbo jumbo; nothing to do with my business.

Fast forward a few years

Someone explained the awareness stages of potential clients. That’s when the penny dropped. The knowledge I missed. And if your brilliant content doesn’t convert readers into leads, chances are you’re missing it too.

🤷🏽‍♀️ Does this stuff work for me, you wonder?

Let’s put it this way: I am a single mum, only income provider, mortgage payer, parent, cleaner, cook, you name it, I’m on my own doing it. 

I guess that shows that, yes, organic LinkedIn content marketing can generate enough leads to make a decent living. And have time for other responsibilities in life.

I even have time left over to walk, read, crochet and sleep!

I’ll spare you all the details of the gift and why I could not keep it.
 
What was perfect: the intention behind the gift was great. The type of gift was right up my alley. The colour was one of my favourites. 
 
But the more I looked at it, the more I was like NO. 

No no nooooo…
 
After I stopped laughing so hard I nearly fell off the sofa, I decided to ask him to return the thoughtfully chosen gift.
 
Bit nasty, eh?
 
It’s a bit like LinkedIn lead generation. You do your market research, you understand your ideal client, you know what they want…
 
And when you offer it, you get no takers! YIKES
 
Fat chance that your offer is only a tiny bit off the mark (like the wrong shade of my fav colour), yet your ideal client cannot get past it. 

It’s enough for the offer not to resonate.
 
Or maybe your offer is just a tiny bit off the mark. It seems to be exactly what your market research showed your target audience wants and needs, but… your offer doesn’t deliver the outcome they’re after (like my gift was decorative rather than functional).
 
I told him what was good about the idea, the intention and where it missed the mark. Not the nicest thing to do on Valentine's Day (just as well we celebrated a day early). But if I hadn’t, I’d end up with a collection of no-nooooo growing each birthday, Christmas, anniversary and Valentine's Day.
 
As for you… Maybe your offer is perfect ✨
 
But your marketing misses the mark
 
Guess what? I can help you with that! I’d like to say that my feedback is gentle. Truth be told, I try to be kind, but sometimes… Let’s just say if I added tact and blunt as skills to my profile, one would get a few polite endorsements, the other would become my most endorsed skill in no time.

Never mind, I just got a glowing recommendation from a repeat client
