Recent report from NYU Stern School of Business 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 sheds light on the dual-edged nature of Private Equity in our healthcare system. While PE firms have injected over $1 trillion into the sector over the last decade, the traditional highly-leveraged playbook is showing severe cracks.

Here are the findings that every investor and healthcare leader should be thinking about:

• 𝗨𝗻𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲: PE-owned healthcare companies maintain average debt-to-cash flow ratios of 7.1x. This is more than double the rate of public healthcare companies and well above the 4.0 threshold that financial regulators consider high.
  
• 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁: Almost inevitably, this level of debt servicing leads to staffing reductions. Data shows this compromises patient care, correlating with a 25% increase in in-hospital complications and an 11% higher patient mortality rate in nursing homes.
  
• 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱:  Goal isn't to eliminate private capital from healthcare. It's about reforming the model. Report recommends capping debt ratios and ending high-risk financial engineering like sale-leasebacks.
  
As we look to scale innovation across HealthTech and life sciences, we have to remember that healthcare isn't a standard market.  Patients lack meaningful consumer choice, making it imperative that capital partners prioritize clinical outcomes right alongside financial returns.
