Posting on Linkedin, hoping for leads

When I got that ping
DM inviting me to speak at a company offsite.

A small, sensible voice whispered: Say yes.

The louder one said:
You don’t have time.
You’re not ready.
You can’t leave your dog.

So I clicked “Maybe later”
…and went back to designing a social media graphic.

Here’s the failure ↓
I called it strategy.
But it was fear.

I was “willing” in theory ...
as long as willingness didn’t involve being seen, judged, or (God forbid) uncomfortable.

I was willing to do anything…
As long as it didn’t involve humiliation, failure, or a pivot from my plan.

That’s the tricky part about growth → it’s easy to say you’re ready for the next level.

Until the next level asks you to actually show up.

Lots of generic followers won't make you money.
(But 1K true fans can make you rich)

Show what you learned, not just what you achieved.

2️⃣ Begin with “Once upon a time…” thinking. 

Once upon a time… Until one day… Because of that… Until finally… 

3️⃣ Know the ending before you start. 

Decide where your reader's journey ends.

4️⃣ Cut the fluff. Simplify. 

Merge ideas. Drop detours. 

5️⃣ Make the comfortable character uncomfortable. 

Growth lives where comfort ends. 

6️⃣ Write from honesty, not perfection. 

Vulnerability is the shortcut to credibility.

7️⃣ Raise the stakes.

10 Pixar Principles for Expert Storytelling

Some people are info hoarders.

Resistance upon resistance.

Ask what they’re working on → vague answer. 
Ask to see something → “I’ll show you later.” 

Yet they want full access to everything you’ve got.

Here’s my philosophy: If you’re in my circle, you get access.

My systems. 
My knowledge. 
My templates. 

Whatever you need to succeed.

I refuse to gatekeep when I know I can help.

Because when you operate from abundance, collaboration compounds. 

Ideas move faster. 

And trust becomes currency.

People unwilling to share don't make me curious.

They make me cautious.

Surround yourself with those who compound your growth.

Four years ago, my son Max had a major letdown.

Cut his senior year.

The coach handled it poorly.
Told the team first.

Broke the news by phone 
(while my son had Covid)

Still pisses me off.

But, Max handled it with grace. 

Said, "Thank you for having me on the team."

Me? I perfected my death stares. 

But here’s what really humbled me ⬇️ 

My son attended every single game.
Cheered the loudest for every player.

When that same coach asked him for a favor, he politely said no. 

No drama. 
No resentment. 
No need to prove anything.

Just set a boundary.

Because while Max was never destined to be a pro athlete, 

He was always a hard worker 
the loudest encourager
and the kid who showed up for his friends

Here’s the failure: I was focused on right vs. wrong.

Turns out, the lesson was about character.
And my son, not me, was the one modeling it.

We often mistake motion for momentum.

We love our lists, dashboards, and color-coded calendars.

We call it “strategy.”

But half the time, it’s self-soothing.

Every spreadsheet cell, every Canva tweak, every certification gives a hit of dopamine that whispers:

See? You’re doing shit.

Because busyness is socially acceptable.

It keeps us safe from the scarier stuff:

visibility
rejection
judgment

We tend to chase certainty over risking failure.

So we fill our days with empty activities:

1️⃣ Polishing a brand no one sees.
2️⃣ Organizing files instead of your message.
3️⃣ Researching instead of reaching out.
4️⃣ Planning another pivot without data.
5️⃣ Creating more “how” programs.

Busyness looks like control.
Willingness looks like courage.

The first makes you feel safe. The second makes you move.

5 Signs You're Busy, But Not Willing

It’s easy to quit when things get hard. 
(it's the messy middle)

It’s the part no one glamorizes
where progress slows 
momentum fades

Everything feels harder than it should.

That’s where most authors lose steam 

They start strong
ideas flowing
energy high

Then resistance sets in.

Suddenly, every word feels heavy. 
Every sentence gets second-guessed. 
The dream of finishing feels… optional.

This weekend, I was reminded of this ⬇️

I decided to restore an old library table

Day 1 was perfect. 

I gathered supplies
Watched a YouTube video
Made an orbital sander playlist  

Then came Day 2: paint stripper day

It was toxic, sticky, and miserable. 
I wanted to quit halfway through.

But I didn’t. 

Because under the mess was something worth revealing.

That’s the truth about books.
The messy middle isn’t a sign of failure. 
It’s proof that you’re still in it.

The beauty only shows up for the ones who finish.

How to gain authority
(when no one is paying attention)

Everyone's scrolling.
Everyone's distracted. 
Everyone thinks they're an expert.

Here's what I've learned → you only need 5 seconds

One key idea or thought
that gets someone to listen.

It isn't about shouting louder.
It's about being impossible to ignore 

Here are 7 ways to capture 5 seconds:

1️⃣ Deploy strategic silence
→ One line.
→ Make it hurt.
→ Let it breathe.

2️⃣ Use pattern interrupts
→ Break their autopilot scrolling
→ Start mid-sentence with "Because..."

3️⃣ End with a knife twist
→ Challenge their current beliefs
→ Show what it's costing them
→ Make inaction painful

4️⃣ Speak to their right-now problem
→ Show you know their secret pain
→ Offer immediate relief

5️⃣ Use visual language
→ Paint a picture they can't unsee
→ Make them feel it in their gut

6️⃣ Lead with bold ideas
→ Open with a high-insight
→ Give them an aha-moment in one line

7️⃣ Use humor
→ Self-deprecate strategically
→ Make the relatable laughable

In those 5 seconds:

They're not scanning for information.
They're scanning for understanding.

Be that person.

The strangest part of an empty nest? 

You are back where you started, only this time with better funding and fewer insecurities.

It feels similar to graduating college with every option on the table. 

You can live anywhere. 
Do anything. 
Redefine everything.

Except now, you’re not 22 and fearless. 
You’re 53 and aware.

You know the cost of saying yes too quickly. 

You know the peace that comes from saying no.

So the quiet house feels both exhilarating and unnerving. 

The freedom is exciting and a little sad.

As someone who can work from anywhere the questions become:

Where do I want to live?
What do I want to do?

And that’s the beauty. 

It’s not about proving anything.

No kitchen
No bathroom

 Just file cabinets of photographs and a hot plate for coffee.

He was everywhere in New York fashion 
Front row at couture shows
Curbside in the rain 

Yet invisible by choice. 

He refused interviews. 
Hid behind the lens. 
He always said, “I’m not the story.”

When he died, a secret memoir was found.
In it, he confessed wanting to design fashion.
But he was scared of rejection.

That’s the quiet tragedy of unwillingness. 

It doesn’t look like fear. 
It looks like responsibility.  

Bill had credibility, connections, and mastery, but feared being seen differently. 

And that’s where people get stuck
celebrated for competence
paralyzed by reputation

We say we’re reinventing
but we’re just wordsmithing the same story.

Most struggling entrepreneurs don’t have a strategy problem. 

They have a priority problem.

They’ll spend 3 hours perfecting an Instagram Reel… 

But avoid one 30-minute conversation that could bring in a paying client.

They chase validation instead of verification.

Because likes feel safer than sales calls. 
Comments feel easier than clarity. 

And “building awareness” feels productive, until the bank account says otherwise.

Here’s the truth: You don’t need another viral post. 

You need priorities that match your goals.

If you’re not making money (or you’re working nonstop) audit your time through this filter:

Does this activity… 

1️⃣ Lead directly to revenue? 
2️⃣ Strengthen a client relationship? 
3️⃣ Improve delivery or retention?

If not, it’s probably vanity disguised as value.

Entrepreneurship is simple (not easy): 
Stop performing. Start progressing.

Chasing radio deals. 
Living out of suitcases 

The near wins → that almost changed everything.

But what struck me most wasn’t their talent
It was their consistency.

They kept showing up. 

Writing. 
Rewriting. 

Believing the next verse or melody might be the one that connects.

Doing what you love doesn’t make it easy 
 iI means it’s worth it.

The real magic rarely happens in a single moment of luck. 

It happens in the unseen hours before

Every book written

song sung

It all begins the same way: one small, deliberate step at a time.

It isn’t created in leaps. It’s built in layers.

And when your work matters, you keep laying bricks before the applause.

I used to think busy meant productive.

(It's often procrastination with better branding)

Spending hours on the unimportant:

→ “Refreshing” the website.
→ Tweaking brand colors… again.
→ Showing up on all platforms.

Why? Because visible work feels safer than vulnerable work.

It’s progress adjacent.

Somewhere along the way, we stopped chasing results → started chasing proof.

According to economist Charles Goodhart: “When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.”

The metric takes over the mission.

Impressions over conversations
Follower counts instead of leads
Posting streaks instead of connections.

Those metrics make us feel good.

Even though they are meaningless.

The people who actually move forward?

They are willing to make bold moves.

And ignore the vanity reinforcement.

Tuesday, I hit 10K followers
I was told magical things would happen

But they didn't.
They happened much sooner.

I became active on LinkedIn in October 2024. Here are my results:

At 1200 followers, I got my 1st client.

3K followers, I was paid to speak at an event

5k followers, created a niche so small you can crawl through it

7K followers, fully booked with clients

8k followers, raised my prices

9k followers, new collaborations started coming to me

10K+ followers, yet to be written.

The point here is not to humble-brag ... yawn.

It's proof you don't need massive followers to be impacted on this platform.

You just need to show up.
Be clear.
And give more than you take.

I told myself I was playing the winning game.
When it was the creator's game.

And really? I was being forgettable.

Here’s the failure ⬇️ 

My content sounded like everyone else’s. 

And the calls that came reflected that.

→ Tire kickers. 
→ Mismatched clients. 
→ People looking for free direction.

This week, a conversation reminded me why putting your face and voice in front of your brand matters.

When I show up directly ...

The right people arrive warm. 
The wrong people self-select out.

That’s not a branding risk. 
That’s a sales filter.

Specific voice creates specific demand.

AI is everywhere.

It’s driving job losses, 
while creating new careers.

It's creating efficiency,
and deficiency based on deployment.

It’s behind a $1.5B copyright case 
that I’m now part of.

So, how do we reckon this? 
What are we supposed to think?

Here’s what I believe: 
AI is a tool, not a replacement.

It analyzes,
summarizes, 
and replicates patterns. 

But it cannot connect, 
empathize, 
or move people.

It can help you write a story → but it can’t live one.

It can mimic inspiration → but it can’t feel it.

The human spirit remains irreplaceable.

I use AI every day. 

It helps me think faster, 
organize better, 
and create at scale. 

But what gives that creation meaning → is still human.

Love. 
Emotion. 
Curiosity. 
Connection.

That’s the difference between output and impact.
