Last week The Healthtech Collective and Behtar Foundation brought together some brilliant minds building AI for healthcare in India.

Our panel went deep — not into hype, but into the hard questions that actually move the ecosystem forward.

Here are the biggest takeaways 👇

1. More data isn’t the answer — the right data is!
 We were reminded that “more data” is a myth.
 What matters is clarity of purpose → What problem are you solving?
 Sparse, high-context datasets (like lung nodule data from Kentucky with ~1–2M points) drove model accuracy to 94% — because they were built with intentionality, not volume.

2. The 3C Framework for data (Content. Context. Character.)
Before building any model, ask:
a. What content do we truly need?
b. What context (gender, geography, catchment) matters?
c. How confident are we in the data?

3. AI in healthcare must stay clinically useful, not flashy.
The problem statement hasn’t changed:
👉 Clinicians are overworked, regulated, and understaffed.
Any AI must fit ambiently into their workflow.

4. Agentic automation requires boundaries.
We explored the 4 layers of automation:
From simple recommendations → to autonomous actions.
Just because it can be automated doesn’t mean it should.
Doctors still decide how far they’re willing to go — and ethics will define the line.

5. Commercializing open source is a multi-stakeholder effort.
A realistic view:
a. Traditional VCs won’t fund open source alone.
b. Healthcare investments skew consumer-first.
c. We need regulatory push + diversified funding models.

6. The orchestration layer is India’s missing opportunity.
With inference costs dropping 60% every year, innovation will shift to the edge.
We need robust open-source orchestration layers so builders can create real-world solutions — not just models.

7. Why healthcare pilots fail — and how to fix them.
 Pilots collapse because they’re built in silos.
 Their success needs:
 ✔ Early collaboration
 ✔ Shared ownership
 ✔ A connected ecosystem of researchers, clinicians & devs

Last weekend, we at The Healthtech Collective hosted an energising India - US Healthtech Breakfast Meet & Greet in Bangalore — and the conversations were nothing short of powerful!

A special highlight was having Sage Khanuja, a young US-based founder building in the patient engagement and healthcare navigation space. His on-ground experience in the US paired with India’s fast-moving innovation ecosystem sparked some truly eye-opening discussions.

We went deep into:
 🔹 The stark differences in innovation velocity across India and the US
 🔹 India’s biggest bottleneck: the absence of data lakes and de-identified datasets
 🔹 How these gaps slow down AI adoption at scale
