The Great AI Paradox at Work. A resume client told me this story, and I can’t stop thinking about it.

She was hired as a data analyst. 

During the interview, the CEO was crystal clear: “We don’t use AI here. I want real thinking. Human insight.”

Two weeks in, she delivers her first major analysis, which required 40 hours of research, modeling, and validation.

The CEO feedback?
“I ran this through AI. Your numbers are off. Please revise.”

Let that sink in.

AI was lazy and forbidden … but also the benchmark she was being judged against.

Every week for three weeks after that, the same pattern:
• Human work required
• AI comparison applied
• Zero permission to use the same tool

That’s not a performance standard. 
That’s an impossible one.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth more leaders need to hear:
If you’re judging employees against AI output, you’ve already decided AI is the standard. You just don’t want to say it out loud.
