Xarxa Vives d'Universitats

The position is a freelance collaboration with Xarxa Vives d'universitats (i.e. the network of universities within the Catalan–speaking territory), which involves the following tasks:
 
- Devise of a common language policy for the 22 partner universities.
- Definition and methodology of the eight specific indicators, endorsed by the Vice-Chancellors of Language Affairs of the 22 partner universities.
- Qualitative and quantitative analysis and follow-up of such eight indicators for every university — actual usage of languages and linguistic resources; alignment with individual language policy plans.
- Review of the wider language policy of the 22 partner universities — internal regulations and agents.
- Review of the wider language policy of the relevant governments — national legislation, regional legislation (where devolved), and their transposition into the universities.
- Set-up of the language chart for the 22 partner universities, based on corporate and external reports — updated and context–adjusted theoretical approach.

Linguist

Universitat de Barcelona

The position is a freelance collaboration with Universitat de Barcelona, which involves the following tasks:
 
- Proofreading and typesetting of corporate documents (style guides, curriculums of degrees).
- Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the language-level exams for teaching and research staff.
- Follow-up of the students enrolled in the language buddy programme.

Bitext

The position is a freelance collaboration with Bitext Innovations, which involves the following tasks:
 
- Retrieval of 5,932 synonyms (i. e. functional and intra-linguistic equivalents) of keywords in six domains within Biomedicine for article–indexing purposes — matched given keywords and their synonyms validated.
- Expansion of 24,500 abbreviations (i. e. shortenings, symbols, and acronyms) — matched given abbreviations and their expansion validated.
- Check of the contents (domains of the terms; abbreviations and/or expansions of the abbreviations, including proper names).
- Validation of the contents as per the single-blind assessment review of external experts (professionals from the client accounts).

The position is a freelance collaboration with Language Services at University of Barcelona, which involves the following tasks:

- «El meu company es comunica en llengua de signes» (‘My classmate speaks Catalan Sign Language’). A series of educational videos for Catalan Sign Language speakers to participate in the typical communicative situations in academic settings within the Catalan university system (e.g. classrooms, halls of residence).
- «L'Europass i les terceres llengües» (‘Foreign languages within Europass’). A state–of–the–art report on the resources available to enhance and prove the competences in foreign languages for students (both enrolled students and incoming/outgoing exchange students) within the Catalan university system, in the wider framework of the European Higher Education Area and the Europass credentials.
- «Guies de conversa» (‘Conversational guides’). A series of bilingual (English, Catalan) corpus–based conversation booklets to reduce the comprehension gaps between laypeople, university students, and professors and/or professionals in specific fields of knowledge — the three domains covered so far being Medicine, Podiatry (a subdomain of Medicine), and Chemistry.

The position has been discontinued since, along with the projects.

Universitat Pompeu Fabra

The position was a predoctoral–funded placement at IULATERM research group. Linked to a specific training, it involved the effective contribution to the projects within the research group:

This position also involved the design, elaboration, and dissemination of activities and publications on Corpus Linguistics (Terminology, Neology, Lexicography, and Computational Linguistics). Two administrative tasks were most salient: boosting the information flow (through scholarly–focussed newsletters and non-expert–targeted website news) and implementing a regular corporate agenda (workshop schedule and overall logistics) within a 20–people team.

Predoctoral Researcher

The position was an extra-curricular placement at Observatori de Neologia research group. It involved the effective contribution to the activities and projects within the research group, active during that period:

The position aimed to enhance the methodology related to the retrieval, description, and analysis of neological units (i.e. novel formal and/or semantic coinages) in written and oral corpora in Catalan and Spanish. A major achievement was the set up of a conference on Neology (targeted at experts) and a contest on Neology (for experts and non-experts alike). The training of a 15–people cohort for the project listed was also fulfilled; some of those participants have been since recruited into the research group.

Postgraduate Researcher

The position was a pre-graduate collaboration with Observatori de Neologia research group. It involved the effective contribution to the ongoing project:

Office québécois de la langue française

The position was an extra-curricular placement at the Office for the French Language in Québec, as part of the module of Terminology Management of the BA in Translation and Interpreting. It involved the effective contribution to the ongoing collaborative project (Specialized Dictionaries), which encompassed every stage of the lexicographical process — planning, structuring, drafting, writing, and publishing in the internal corporate electronic platform —. The specific outcome consisted of a 210–term specialized dictionary of Public Nutrition within a 15–people team (to be published as a free–access resource in a digital format).

Terminologist

Essentially, I am a word analyzer with a creative mindset. A proofreader–copyeditor (Catalan, Spanish, English) and a translator (English/French > Catalan/Spanish, Catalan <> Spanish). More broadly, an applied linguist (specialized in Terminology, Neology, and Lexicography).

I am shifting to the publishing and/or medcomms industries. I am skilled in fictional, non-fictional (including biomedical), and factual-fictional literature, either original or translated – and in the relevant materials and methods for assessment.

Throughout most of my career I have taken a lexicon-focussed approach to research – also, currently: research applied to translation, proofreading, terminology management, and content writing. I have been interested in morphology – earlier as an academic I elaborated on its interface with semantics, syntax, and (plain) discourse.

I coined the term ‘Eventive Specialized Lexical Unit’ throughout the PhD thesis and the articles or chapters therefrom. Descriptive terminology goes actually way beyond nouns and entities.
