The “SDR vs GTM Engineer” debate misses the point.

“GTM Engineers are the future” or “The SDR role is  dead" or  "I replaced my SDR team with AI"...

That framing is lazy.

The real question isn’t who should own outbound forever.
It’s who should own what type of outbound at your current stage.

Here’s the truth:
- SDRs are great when they’re focused.
- GTM Engineers are great when you need coverage.

Both fall apart when you ask them to do the wrong job.

If a rep is working ~100 accounts: they can think, personalize and build hypotheses and relationships.

Push that same human to 300+ accounts and quality collapses.

That’s where GTM Engineering shines - automated, signal-driven outbound can cover thousands of accounts at a decent quality with far better economics at early stages or low ACVs.

Once you cross roughly 100+ accounts per rep, automation beats human-in-the-loop every time.
