You’re standing in front of a potential client. You’ve got one shot to win them over. And you say … ?

That’s where Nathan Williams - The Pitch Coach, the 516th person I've met on my quest to have lunch with 500 strangers, comes in.

Nathan is a pitch coach – he helps business owners and salespeople navigate those high-pressure moments when words matter most.

In a short window of time, you’re expected to understand what someone wants, show that you can help them and explain why they should choose you over everyone else. That’s a tough ask – which is why many businesspeople (me included) don’t always show up as clearly as they’d like.

Nathan is the opposite of a glib salesperson. When he speaks, he does so with warmth and sincerity. And often, he doesn’t speak much at all. He asks thoughtful questions that give the other person space to tell their story and clarify what actually matters to them.

He works with entrepreneurs like mortgage brokers, buyer’s agents and real estate agents, as well as large organisations including Westpac, Zurich and NAB. Many of his clients are technically excellent, but struggle in live conversations. As Nathan points out, that’s hardly surprising – most of us spend years learning our craft and almost no time practising how to sell it.

When people decide they’re sick of missing out on clients they know they deserve, they call in Nathan.

I've written numerous award submissions for property and finance professionals. I've also been an awards judge. So I know how to write a great awards submission.

Here are my top five tips for writing a submission that will maximise your chances of success:

1. Be specific. Don't say "I had an amazing year." Say "I increased sales by 32.6% year-on-year."

2. Substantiate your claims. If you say you did great marketing, share the details of a specific campaign and the results it achieved.

3. Repeat the question in your opening sentence. So if you're asked "How did you grow your business last financial year?", your answer should start like this: "The way I grew my business last financial year was by doing X, Y and Z."

4. Stay on topic. Don't include information that isn't directly relevant to the question.

5. Be concise. Just because you're given 400 words to answer a question, doesn't mean you need to use all of them.

Write 365 evergreen social media posts. Publish one per day for an entire year. Then publish the same posts again the next year. And the year after that. Because they're evergreen, you can keep publishing them forever.
