Until then, I was naive about the game being played. I thought working hard, keeping my head down, and trusting my boss to advance me was all I needed.

Truth is, young Natalie was just grateful for the opportunity to play in the same arena as the “boys”.

So to think about asking for more? That felt too needy. 

I waited and hoped for growth instead.

Then I saw peers landing promotions ahead of me, performing at a similar capacity, and it hit me:

If you’re not selfish, you’re on the sidelines. 

Wherever you are in your career today, stop thinking of “selfish” from an outdated narrative.

I still remember the sound of my heart pounding.

It was a regular Tuesday team meeting.

Markets had just closed. 

12 of us packed into the big guy’s corner office.

Everyone was sharing wins, losses, opportunities.

Then my boss made eye contact with me.

I froze.

I had an idea to share - a good one actually.

But all my brain could do in that moment was spiral:

What if it’s wrong?
What if I sound stupid?
What if they judge me?

So I smiled. Nodded. And said nothing.

On the trading floor, confidence = currency.

And for a long time, I didn’t have enough of it.

I’d seen what happened when someone spoke up and got it wrong:

→ Ignored
→ Ridiculed
→ Dismissed

So I kept my ideas to myself.

Let silence do the talking.

But silence sends a message too.

And it was reinforcing the story (to them and to me) that I wasn’t ready for more.

I still remember venting to my work bestie later that night:

“Ugh, I wish I said something!!”

And the golden advice she gave me: 

“Most people won’t remember what you actually say. But they WILL remember that you said something. Might as well have a hand in shaping what they remember.”

She was right.

That night I made a new rule:

→ Speak. Even if I doubt myself.

And 10 years later, I'm still going strong.

Dear high performer,

Your mediocre is most people’s best effort.

Read that again.

You’re so used to pushing, producing, and proving that you forget the standard you operate at isn’t normal.

Hear me out…

You’ve built your success on being dependable - the one who gets sh*t done, fixes problems, and steps up when others drop the ball.

But there’s a flip side to that strength.

You don’t know how to not deliver.

You don’t coast. You actually feel uncomfortable when you don’t have enough to do and immediately find ways to deliver elsewhere.

You don’t rest. You prioritize everyone and everything else over your own well-being and often skip the vacation days you’ve earned.

And even on your “off” days, you’re still performing above average.

But it’s not what will sustain you long-term.

That beautiful ambition needs a new strategy otherwise you’ll burn out.

And you haven’t come this far to come this far.

Growth at the next stage is about doing less, but with more intention.

You’ve done enough and proven yourself 10x over.

It’s time for a reset. 

Not because you’ve fallen behind, but because you’ve outgrown the pace that got you here.

So if slowing down feels uncomfortable, good. 

That discomfort is proof you’re expanding in your best chapter yet.
