guys, this is bloody important 🚨

in Kubernetes when you run your container in pod as a non-root user and attach a volume, sometimes it won't attach.

the reason. often the volume is mounted with a root user permission.

so people change the container permissions to root.

And that's wrong ❌ 

If you are running your container as 1001 user, you can add following config to set the right permissions for the volume.

spec:
      securityContext:
        fsGroup: 1001 # The GID that will own the mounted volume

What does it do?

It sets the ownership of mounted volume to the group with GID 1001. This allows your user inside the container to access to your volume without any root privileges.

following config in containers section is important too. to run the containers inside the pod with 1001 user.

spec:
     securityContext:
       runAsUser: 1001 # The UID of the non-root container user

Devops engineers are not dumb 😎

Don't criticize them for using Red Hat or Ubuntu container images. Not Alpine.

I've been there, in my 1st K8s project.

We used Red Hat containers to support prod workload on Kubernetes because the government wanted it.

Sometimes the customer says "you must use the distro our security team supports" → Red Hat or Ubuntu only → goodbye Alpine 😅

So please don't always blame the engineers, they are smarter than you think 😊

Right, the release day is planned for mid December.

17th Dec 2025 to be precise.

And here are 3 things you should know.

1. The ability to adjust CPU and MEMORY real-time on pods (In-Place Update) is going to GA in the upcoming release.

HUGE win for the engineers 😃

2. IPVS mode in kube-proxy is getting deprecated.

If you are using ipvs, highly suggest to switch to nftables to modernize things.

3. the support for containerd v1.x ends too.

If you are using, you should upgrade to 2.x

Kubernetes DNS is a ticking time bomb 💣

especially when things go beyond 100 nodes.

At 500+ nodes, with default settings, CoreDNS will inevitably choke, and one of top reason can be exhausted bandwidth.

this bandwidth problem can cause 2-5 second delays in responses. sometimes even more. and it also has very high potential to lead to a full outage if not managed well 💯 

In K8s scale exposes every weak link.

So tune things well. or be ready to catchup with your friends at 3 AM incident call 😃

It's not just Cloudflare, in the recent past, there are many incidents with giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, too.

Coming back, I wrote this blog post few days ago. It was published on Friday and then cloudflare outage followed 😅

Which brings me back to the core idea:
