Thats weird...

Here’s the weird thing about working for yourself. No one cares if you show up.

There’s no one checking if you’re online.

No one asking what you worked on today.

No manager hovering or chasing deadlines.

At first, it feels amazing. Proper freedom.

When I left corporate, I honestly thought that part would be the best bit.

No pointless meetings. No arbitrary timelines.

Just me working on things I actually wanted to build.

What I didn’t expect was how hard the self-discipline part would be.
Turns out it’s way easier to be “productive” when someone else sets the structure.

When that disappears, you really see how you operate.

Some days you just crack on and do the work.

Other days you catch yourself drifting, procrastinating, or waiting for motivation to show up.

And that’s the bit people don’t really talk about.

Most of us need more structure than we think.

Not because we’re lazy.

Just because we’re human.

It’s not a reason not to do it.

It’s just something you should be honest with yourself about before you make the jump.

The freedom is real.

But so is the responsibility.

Don’t quit…yet

I don’t think quitting your job tomorrow is good advice.

Most of the time, it’s terrible advice.

What is smart is stopping the habit of pouring your best energy into a company that would let you go to protect a few extra shareholder points.

I’ve seen it too often.

People grind for years.
Health slips.
Family moments get missed.

Then one meeting. One email. It’s over.

The company keeps moving.
They’re left standing still.

Here’s the alternative I give people.

Find a good company.
Not perfect. Just one that doesn’t break you.

Do your job properly.
Care about the work.
But stop giving 125 percent.

Take that extra 25 percent and invest it in something you own.

A side project.
An audience.
A newsletter.
Anything that can’t fire you.

Let your salary fund your freedom.
Build evenings and weekends until there’s real traction.

Then you move.

That’s what I did.
I stayed employed while I worked it out.
I left when there was something solid waiting.

You don’t rage quit.
You exit calmly, on your terms, with momentum already behind you.

Just do it...

I remember staring at my early posts thinking, 'What if Jeff from Maths class back in the 90's sees this...'😂

Then changing a sentence. Then another. Then deciding maybe today wasn’t the right day after all.

I told myself I was being thoughtful.

Careful. Professional.

What I was really doing was protecting myself from the awkward feeling of putting something out and not knowing how it would land.

Most of those posts I laboured over didn’t go anywhere anyway. The shift was unglamorous.

I started posting things that felt… unfinished. All #entrepreneurs should do the same

Not sloppy. Just honest about where my thinking was at that moment.
And strangely, that’s when people started responding.

There’s good science behind this, by the way. When we over-edit, we often reduce what psychologists call cognitive fluency. The message becomes technically better but emotionally flatter. Easier to critique. Harder to connect with.

People weren’t reacting to the polish.

They were reacting to the idea and whether it felt real.

I also learned, effort is invisible. No one sees the hours you spent rearranging sentences. They only see what you shared and how it made them feel for a second or two.

If you’re stuck refining something you haven’t shared yet, you’re not broken. You’re human. 

Putting your thinking out there always carries a bit of risk...Now I dont care, my posts are 50% of where I want them to be but 50% of imperfect is 100% better than zlich.

This is what work feels like when it’s right

Not balance. Alignment.

When your work is connected to who you are, it stops draining you and starts charging you. You finish the day with energy left. Ideas keep flowing. Effort feels meaningful, not heavy.

This is not about grinding harder.
It is about choosing work that pulls you forward.

You move your body. You take breaks without guilt. You show up fully, then step away knowing you are building something that matters.

When work fits your life, momentum replaces burnout.

Copy drug dealers...

Drug dealers understand something most businesses avoid.

They are not afraid to give product away for free.

Not because they are reckless.

Because they are confident.

They know the product works. They know the experience hooks. And they know that once someone feels the value, they will come back with money.

That is not criminal thinking. That is commercial clarity.

The smartest businesses operate the same way. They remove friction at the start. They let customers experience the outcome before asking for commitment.

Free is not generosity.
Free is strategy.

It forces you to compress your value into something immediate and undeniable. A result that lands fast. Something people can feel, not just be told about.

That is why test drives exist. Why software has free trials. Why the best consultants lead with diagnostics, pilots, or assessments instead of proposals.
If the free experience does not create pull toward the paid one, the issue is rarely marketing. It is the product.

Across digital businesses, customers who experience a product before buying convert at significantly higher rates and stay longer. Trust is built through use, not persuasion.

If you are hesitant to give a little away, it is usually a signal.

Not about pricing.

I could never have done this in KPMG  

Very grateful that for the most part I get to run my day the way that fits my lifestyle

Early to wake, gym bit of stretching coffee and breath work

Followed by deep work for four hours on most important task with clients I want to work with

The nine to five (or seven to seven as it was most days) is a distant memory

I cannot believe I actually worked for so long in an environment where I had to ask to go on holiday and justify where each hour of the week was spent each Friday
