Well, what an incredible time we had at VDS ✨

My 4th time attending, and the first time my badge said 'founder' rather than press. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀; 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. Running on caffeine and adrenaline, but had to pause and smile at this evolution with so much gratitude.

Because I was there with Jim Christian and James Leonard, awesome co-creators of Remote Resilience Hub ... thanks to València Innovation Capital and our brilliant mentor Mauro Xesteira, showcasing our award winning project from the Garage48 "Hack The Future" event in Tallinn in May.

It was fantastic to see e-Residency of Estonia there in force (even ads on the metro 😎) - every year the 🇪🇪💜🇪🇸 connection deepens, and it was so good to see Guillermo Chávez García David Bullock Liina Vahtras and Jae Jensen-Ginter among many others, as well as Tallinn deputy Mayor Margot Roose💚 

Also it was lovely to catch up with people from the Remote Work Europe community, as it means so much when someone comes up and tells you they appreciate the work you are doing. A lot of this content work feels like casting messages out into the void, you never know what has landed where, and to close the loop face to face meeting real people at such a powerful event is always the icing on the cake.

I learned a huge amount this week, especially about the art of pitching to investors rather than clients. A completely different mindset and message. And we have a lot more to build and develop in the weeks ahead.

I’ll share more reflections on that soon, once I’ve had time to process it all. It's all storytelling, and I love developing and learning new ways to do my favourite thing 🥰

For now I am resting my aching brain and feet, and relaxing into the weekend with gratitude and a full heart.

Remote work is no longer a side issue for HR or lifestyle bloggers. It is a structural force already reshaping Europe’s economies, communities, and demographics.

The latest policy brief from the R-Map project EU project reveal how shifts in mobility, housing, and labour markets are already underway. Spain is a clear case study: thriving cities at one end, depopulating interiors at the other. Remote work, supported by the right policies, could be the lever that reconnects these stories—strengthening resilience, revitalising rural regions, and addressing demographic decline.

It's good to see kids able to celebrate Halloween again tonight, since everything was cancelled in 2024 during the city's crisis and mourning.

The DANA floods of October 2024 didn’t just destroy homes and livelihoods; they changed how many of us thought about 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬, 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺.

For us, they became the catalyst for the Remote Resilience Hub: a way to contribute our professional skills to local preparedness and recovery. Not through sandbags or shovels (though many helped that way too), but through systems, communication, and connection that can keep businesses and teams functioning when the unexpected strikes.

This week’s reflection isn’t about looking back in grief, but forward in determination to make sure that what we build next is smarter, more sustainable, and more humane.

Last week I joined a planning call for the upcoming 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 & 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 — and I’m so looking forward to being part of this important hybrid event in Málaga next month.

It's essential to be explicit about how diversity and inclusion are not boxes to tick, but ongoing practices that shape every interaction, especially in 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. When teams are distributed, inclusion doesn’t just happen. It takes 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 from everyone involved.

I’ll be speaking about that collective responsibility for inclusion in distributed work, how leaders, freelancers, and team members alike can design cultures that include every voice, wherever it’s located.

A year ago this week, Valencia was underwater.

Now, the city is buzzing with energy again, and I had the privilege of standing at Valencia Digital Summit, talking about how we’re building infrastructure for remote resilience.

𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 ✨

After 25 years of working, leading, and consulting remotely, I finally did the hardest thing of all - I systematised it into a framework that works.

Turning lived experience into a framework meant pausing long enough to extract patterns from practice: what really makes distributed teams thrive, and where even good intentions break down. It was challenging because every team is different, every situation, and every transformation... 

And yet, there were clear patterns there to explore.

It’s been a journey of distillation. Learning from startups to 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘦 the intangible, without losing the human nuance that makes remote work so powerful.

The result is the 𝟱𝗖𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀:
Culture | Communication | Console | Collaboration | Connection.

Together, they form a practical model for diagnosing and improving how teams work when they can’t all be in the same room — and for leaders ready to design organisations that are resilient, not reactive.

Home isn’t always where you were born. 
Sometimes it’s where you’re remade.

A year ago today, Valencia was hit by the worst floods in its history. More than 200 lives lost, thousands displaced, and a city forever changed.

For many of us who have made this place our chosen home, it was a moment of reckoning. Watching the mud and chaos, seeing neighbours dig strangers out of debris, and realising how fragile life and infrastructure can be… it forged a different kind of belonging.

I’m still a remote worker, but never a nomad. This city adopted me, and like all adopted families, that bond feels earned, maybe even deeper.

There’s much still to be done: accountability, preparation, political will, climate action. Those of us who can, must. We each contribute in our different ways, bringing our unique 'grains of sand.' 

For example, it's weird to say that one of the ways I contributed last year was shopping - but lots of the areas where aid and resources would typically be distributed were directly affected last year. So, crazy as it sounds, it made sense for people in neighbouring suburbs like ours to go and buy what was needed and take it to the distribution depots - whatever was announced, like the local scout groups collecting kitchen equipment, or schools needing basic resources.

When people overseas sent me donations I spent it on local appeals like that, and tried to get them to where they could do the most good.

Everyone did what they could, and found ways to contribute and support.

Out of the heartbreak came the beginnings of the Remote Resilience Hub , and the chance to contribute to something lasting and local, helping businesses and communities stay connected, whatever the next crisis brings.

But today, let’s pause to remember. The people, the losses, and the lessons that must not wash away. 🌧️💙

BUT I DID IT! Yes I want this🥇, almost as much as I want my old phone picked up!!
