When I took the CPA exam the very first time... I failed. 

And the score felt excruciatingly low, 57. 

I was really devastated. 

There was a lot going on, and I didn't set myself up for success. 

(I was actually in the ER the night prior for a medical issue that I addressed later in the summer with surgery. But I couldn't NOT go to that first test. It was too late to reschedule. And I took it feeling miserable.)

But that score genuinely rocked me. And it put me on a very negative trajectory for the entire process. 

I was never told that it was an expensive practice test. 

If you know me... I say as humbly as possible:

I'm extremely motivated, dedicated, and high-performing. I had extremely high grades in college. Summa cum laude. 

I'm not a partier. I turned in every assignment.

I'm a "pleasure to have in class" and enjoy learning.

When I got that score and then the subsequent 70 on REG. I thought, "Maybe I'm just not as smart as I think I am." 

I couldn't give myself grace for the health issues that I was experiencing or any of the other context of my life that was making the path more challenging.

I couldn't accept that maybe I missed a few concepts being a general business undergrad, not accounting.

I didn't realize that I was being extremely unrealistic with how short the timeline was that I had scheduled. 

All of that led to me feeling horrible while studying, and really getting in my head. Psyching myself out. 

I wished there was someone I could talk to. Someone who could really understand what I was feeling. 

That's why I do what I do. To pay it forward. To be the person that I wish I could have had.

I don’t talk about this often, but my career was built through necessity and flexibility.

In 2012, I left public accounting.

Some naysayers said I was giving it all up. One told me, "It seemed like a waste to give up everything I had worked for."

It hurt. And I did a lot of research about happiness and how to become fulfilled. 

I started by looking for a remote role. There wasn't even really a name. On job boards, it was "0% travel" in 2012. 

Recruiters would call me and get excited about my Big Four experience. Thinking it was an easy paycheck. 

And then I asked if they thought I could find a remote role. I had a couple of people laugh at me or say they'd call me back if they heard of anything. 

Let's just say crickets...

Especially in public accounting. 

SO...

I got creative. I started blogging. I started writing textbooks. 

I started teaching online. 

Even though I was young, I had people take a chance on me. 

Not all my dots connect perfectly, and some experiences are not positive. 

But I have learned a lot over the last decade. 

And I continue to innovate in my business so that I can be present for the things that matter in life. 

AND

I DO think having my CPA was the biggest factor in allowing this all to happen. 

While my military spouse peers were getting into MLMs, I secured remote roles in the profession, leveraging my skills.

So if you're on the fence about taking the CPA exam:

Take it from me that it is one of the most flexible careers you could choose.

And it's a perfect second career if you're unhappy in the one that you currently have.

Remember you're not alone in this process.

Practice tests (aka less than 75) don't define your worthiness to become a CPA. 

I believe in you, and now you just have to believe in yourself. 

I promise this is a "passable" exam. Anyone, I repeat, ANYONE who puts in the time can pass it. 

And as you will see from the proud CPA selection, there are so many of us who want you to succeed.

I'd love to check in from everybody who says, "Yes, I'm ready!" one year from now, and see how it's going.

Now, back to studying!

In my business, I don't currently operate on a subscription model. I operate like a drop-in/punch card. 

Once you're established, I have a set rate for phone calls as "a current coaching client," and you get my scheduling link.

It's also why I have such a small group of people that I work with. 

Why do I do this? 

I've always preferred to have a punch card or some sort of drop-in rate. Gym, dance classes, and child care activities.

If I don't, I end up spending a lot of money on subscription products that I honestly don't use enough to justify the recurring billing.

And it always feels icky to me to waste money every month on unused subscriptions.

And also guilty that I should be using them more. 

So that's not how I operate.

My business, my rules. Which is just a lovely thought.

It’s with a heavy heart I share this post. 

Sharon Lassar, Ph.D., CPA (Florida) was a true pioneer. The profession is better for having her a part of it and will miss her so much. 

Her impact ripples so deeply. 
 
I hope that we all can continue to carry her torch. True leadership.

The Daniels College of Business is deeply saddened to share that Sharon Lassar, the John J. Gilbert Endowed Professor and longtime director of the School of Accountancy, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 22.
 
Sharon shaped the future of the School of Accountancy over 15 years, strengthening academics, preparing students for career success and building a strong alumni community.

PSA of today: Do you know the definition of CPA-eligible in 2026?

It varies so much state by state right now!

Professors: please be sure you are defining what “CPA-eligible” is for your students before job fairs and interviews! 

Students: don’t rely on your academic advisor. Do the research and know what you need in order to be CPA-eligible in your state.  

The firms are using this phrase very regularly now in hiring, especially now that both the 120/150 licensure pathways are more common. 

Students and job seekers need to be able to confidently say yes or no at any point in time.

Behind the scenes: I've been revamping my website.

My process:
- Outline my ideal client journey (as it stands right now). I'm a paper and pencil person so I've been drawing it out. 
- Do a page "audit" of my current site. What do I like? What's not working?
- Build the backend automation and databases. What would make it easier to manage inquires and support my future clients?
- Make it super pretty and "branded" for me (such fun!)
