Friendly take from the field 👇

Shopify apps are powerful and many are essential for growing a store.

That said, after working on a lot of Shopify builds, I’ve noticed something interesting:

The average store has 15-20 apps installed,
but often only 5-7 are doing the real heavy lifting.

When apps overlap or go unused, it can sometimes lead to:
→ Slower site performance
→ Higher monthly costs
→ More complexity to manage

This isn’t about avoiding apps it’s about using the right ones, intentionally.

Before adding a new app, it’s worth asking:
1️⃣ Does Shopify offer this natively now?
2️⃣ Can an existing app already handle it?
3️⃣ Would a small custom solution be simpler long-term?

Some of the best-performing Shopify stores I’ve seen aren’t app-heavy they’re thoughtfully configured, fast, and easy to maintain.

Apps are an incredible part of the Shopify ecosystem.
Using them well is what makes the difference.

February's done. Here's what actually happened.

We got pickier about who we work with- and it paid off. Saying no to a project that wasn't in our wheelhouse felt uncomfortable in the moment, but it freed us up to do better work for the clients we already had. 3 major store launches shipped this month, and I'm proud of the team for that.

We've also been experimenting with AI in our day-to-day operations. Not to replace anyone - just to work smarter. Jury's still out on some of it, but the early results are promising.

Now, the stuff we haven't cracked yet - hiring is hard. Finding people who are genuinely good AND a good fit? That's a whole thing. We're also in that constant push-pull between keeping retainer clients happy and taking on new builds. And our own marketing keeps getting bumped down the list, which is pretty funny for a team that does this for a living.

March is shaping up to be a big one. Two Shopify Plus store launches on the calendar, a CRO guide we've been sitting on for too long, and a webinar for supplement brand founders that I'm genuinely excited about.

11 years into this and I'm still figuring it out. Honestly that's probably why I still enjoy it.
