Yes, folks I know nobody is coming to save me. I need to do what I need to do.

I need Emotional Intelligence

Self Awareness - I need to know myself
Self Regulation - I need to be totally in charge of myself
Social Awareness - Knowledge of what is happening around me
Social Skills - Ability to deal with people

Isn't it simple? The what often is. The how is where the hard work kicks in. 

Emotional Intelligence can be read about in a book over a matter of a few days.

It plays out in our lives across our lifespans - and we never stop learning.

All coaches and learners know one vital truth.

That good habits are a must for success. 

The good news is that they can be learned.

And hard wired into us. 

So how do habits form? 

Charles Duhigg gives us some wonderful insights.

He highlights a three step process

1. Cue

The cue is a trigger. It could, for example, be coffee.

2. Routine

The coffee may prompt us to check our email, for example. That becomes our routine. 

3. Reward

If pleasure is derived from this, it is on its way to becoming a habit.

In habit formation, the brain shifts from active reasoning to automatic functioning. This is the impact of the basal ganglia.

The pre-frontal cortex goes quiet.

An example of such an activity would be scrolling social media. 

Good habits can also be instilled. Some habits are called keystone habits

This means that indulging in them triggers other habits

For example, exercise :

-helps people eat better
-helps sleep better
-helps think better
-helps smoke less
-helps drink less

Alcoa was performing very badly when Paul O' Neill took charge.

So what did he do to turn it around?

-he did not work on profits
-he did not work on products
-he did not work on market share

He simply worked on safety

A total focus on safety :

-streamlined operations
-improved communication
-improved accountability

Why are habits so powerful?

-they create small wins
-wins encourage people to feel they can do more
-identity shifts happen (people think of themselves as winners rather than somebody who has simply won)

It is always a wonderful idea to have a look from the other side.

And that is precisely what we did the other day. 

HQ had extensively carried out the training of all the staff of a premium fine dine outlet, a first of its kind fusion cuisine outlet.

Gauri Kher and I, Milind Kher went out to lunch to this place with our people, of course, to enjoy and also see how effective the training was.

Some important parameters are:

Where Emotional Intelligence meets etiquette, you get class.

So what do classy people do?

1. They move with deliberation

They always have smooth movements. Never jerky ones. Fast signals anxiety. Slow signals power. Classy people move at 70% the pace. 

Not in every thing - in the way they reach for things and the way they turn their heads.

2. Upright posture.

They always maintain an upright posture. This shows poise and confidence

3. Controlled hand gestures.

From belly button to eye level. Neither above nor below this range. 

They never point with their fingers. Always with the full palm. 

4. Graceful handling. They cradle their coffee mugs in two hands. It makes for stability and makes them look organized. 

5. Strategic place claiming

They do not shrink themselves by crossing their legs while standing, or shrinking their shoulders.  They exist at full size.

6. Composed greeting gesture.

While shaking hands, they neither lunge, nor offer a limp, "dead fish" handshake.

They maintain eye contact. 

7. Restrained, fidget free hands. 

This reveals the inner state. They either clasp them on their laps or put them on arm rests.

If we truly understood this, we would never waste a single breath.

Our breath is the bridge between our soul and God.

The heedless waste their breath like coins tossed in the wind. 

Anger, gossip, resentment are all debts against the soul. 

On the other hand, each breath is a prayer that opens a different door for us.

His student complained "I pray but my heart runs away" 

Al Ghazali said "That is because your body prays, but your breath does not remember. Instil remembrance in your breath and your heart will join in prayer"

Peace, clarity and focus are the biggest doors that happen for us. And these invite health, focus and happiness.

In the world of coaching, MasterMyLife (MML) is making waves.

And YML CMC, the "finishing school" of MML is helping the ICF Coaches of MML ride those waves. 

Coaching models work very powerfully, and at YML CMC, we have developed the "SPLIT" model of working. 

So, what is this? It is Self Propelled Learning In Teams. 

We have two kinds of sessions:

1 > Facilitator led sessions - where best in class facilitators take learners through practical skills needed for becoming the very best in the industry.

2 > Learner led sessions - Where learners take other learners through sessions on subjects that will add to their capabilities as coaches. 

Whereas these have thus far been solo sessions, we are now also looking at a framework that takes into account micro learning - where multiple learners will take the audience through micro sessions.

The quality of facilitation and the practical lessons the sessions are imparting are increasing their popularity.

I am totally delighted to lead such a community.

Not hitting the snooze button on the alarm is a phenomenal act of self-regulation !! 

So what is the big deal? 

We shall examine. 

Let us take something from Mel Robbin's "The 5 Second Rule"

Mel had a client called Stephen who would consistently hit the snooze button. 

He took a resolute step and texted Mel:

I watched your Tedx speech on youtube. Truly inspiring. I'll be waking up at 6:30 tomorrow morning and tossing the covers off. No snooze.

And what happened? Let us say it in Stephen's words

For the sake of brevity, we shall skip the terrible situation Stephen was in before taking this step (and it was really, really bad !!)

Stephen said:

I guess if I were to sum it all up for you, it would be this. I love helping others and I've long had visions of doing that through business by sharing knowledge, wealth and resources with others to allow them to pursue their passions. As of September 12th the snooze button has been broken and autopilot no longer exists. Watch out world, here I come and I am bringing friends.

When we take a resolute step to do something good and powerful, doors just keep opening and success builds on itself.

85 percent

The Harvard Business review reported that 85 percent of their executives believe their organizations are bad at diagnosing problems.

That is because root cause analysis does not happen.

As in companies, so also in life.

Peter explains.

He says that we have to keep drilling down in our "whys" till we reach the root cause.

The immediate answer is called the proximate cause
The last answer is called the ultimate cause.

Peter provides an example.

He says somebody's (let's call him Hal) driving license gets suspended. The traffic court has been waiting for Hal to respond to a series of speeding violations, but he has never complied. A warrant for Hal's arrest is issued, the police go over to his home, bust down his door, and throw him in jail for a long weekend.

Why is Hal in Jail?

Because there was an arrest warrant out for him (proximate cause)

Why? Because he hadn't responded in court to his multiple speeding violations. 

Why? Because he exceeded the speed limit nine times and got caught

Why? Because he had a need or impulse to go superfast on the highway

Why? Because he never had a set of boundaries as a child and thought he could do whatever he wanted without consequences. 

What do we derive from this? Something very simple - and yet overlooked probably 85 percent of the time - the ultimate cause.

Should we go for the top end of the market or should we go for the masses?

There are schools of thought that support either view.

Daniel says we go for the top end

10% of the people have 60% of the wealth
90% of the people have only 40 % of the wealth

Looks logically sound.

Making it work takes a lot !! 

We need 3 components

1. Pitch
2. Contextual adjacency
3. Land and expand

1. Pitch

This has six components:

Name - the name of our business
Same - what we do 
Fame - Social proof/credibility
Pain - The pain points we address
Aim - What we are targeting
Game - The big picture

Always ASK FOR PERMISSION. It makes the listener receptive and helps us get to the point

2. Contextual Adjacency

This is what makes us relevant to the context of the prospect.

-A good setting
-A good gift if possible
-Common interests in books and courses
-Education of a similar level
-Mutual contacts

3. Land and Expand

-Generate proof of our competence through insights
-Provide data difficult for the prospect to access
-Invite them to talk about their situation
-Later, give them a presentation about their situation and our proposed solution

Once we start working - we can (and should) ask for a greater scope/scale of work

What is Ashtang Yog?

Ashtang literally means 8 parts. 

1. Praytyahara
Introspection. Looking within. Providing a space between stimulus and response

2. Dharana

Focus. We all know that energy flows where the focus goes. We can use anything as a point of focus...maybe a candle. This helps us collect all our faculties.

3. Dhyana
This is meditation, and involves centering the mind. This is easy after focus has been achieved

4. Samadhi
Blissful absorption - with the Ultimate Reality. 

5. Yam - behavior

Ahimsa - Non Violence. Beyond that, compassion and kindness.
Satya - Truth. Sticking with the truth in every situation
Asteya - Non stealing. Not just objects. Even people's time and energy
Brahmacharya - Observing restraint
Aparigriha - Detachment and minimalism

6. Niyam - Observance
Shaucha - Cleanliness. Bathing, grooming AND decluttering
Santosh - Contentment
Tapas - Inner Purification
Swadhyay - Self study
Ishwar Pranidhan - Surrender to a Higher Power

7. Asana
Posture. Ergonomic and  flexible

8. Pranayam
Breath - regulated and deep.

True class is quiet.

Which is why it has such an impact

And it is SO vital when we move up.

So how do classy people show up?

1. They get names correctly

They will use your name the way you have introduced yourself - not shorten it arbitrarily or turn it into a nickname. They understand they are addressing a peer, not a pet. Using a nickname without permission is like pulling rank.

2. They don't have to tell people how polite they are

If people feel the need to advertise how well they treat other people, that need says it all. Classy people never do that.

3. They follow through without being reminded. 

If you send them an RSVP, they will respond on time. If they have committed to giving you something, they will give it on time. 

4. They don't correct their partner in public

Two people can sometimes remember something differently. When that happens, they will not correct their partner in public. They will not allow an anecdote to descend into debate. 

5. They refer to their partner with respect

They  refer very respectfully to their partner like Catherine does to William. No showy intimacy there.

6. They never highlight mistakes of others.

When somebody accidentally does something wrong, like say, knocking a glass over, they will deliberately ignore it (they may quietly slip them a napkin). The person is already embarrassed - it shows in the body language, and they do not want to rub it in.

7. Their gratitude is sincere

They do not say a mechanical "thanks." They will thank specifically. 

As we enhance our personal brand, these become increasingly important.
They make a definite difference to the way we progress.

Emotional Intelligence permeates every aspect of our life.

It manifests brilliantly in customer orientation.

A phenomenal practitioner of this is Jeff Bezos. 

He describes the customer philosophy of Amazon in two paras. 

Succinct and powerful.

"We intend to build the world's most customer-centric company. We hold as axiomatic that customers are perceptive and smart, and that brand image follows reality and not the other way around. Our customers tell us that they choose Amazon Dotcom and tell their friends about us because of the selection, ease-of-use, low prices and service that we deliver.

But there is no rest for the weary. I constantly remind our employees to be afraid, to wake up every morning terrified. Not of our competition, but of our customers. Our customers have made our business what it is, they are the ones with whom we have a relationship, and they are the ones to whom we owe a great obligation. And we consider them to be loyal to us - right up until the second that someone else offers them a better service."

This is very powerful and I shall some day share at length why I think of Amazon as such a great company.

The YML CMC session led by Pritam Das was a very useful one that added a lot of value.

We discussed at length the capabilities of different AI apps, which in today's context is so important.

-The factors mentioned above help create more opportunities. Because this allows our mental faculties to function in top gear.

I have first hand experienced these benefits in interacting in person with people. I would highly recommend it.
