You can't hide as entrepreneur. You must face your fears, insecurities and self-doubts head on if you want to have any chance of making a success of it.

When I joined forces with my co-founders to build Dent into what is a leading accelerator for entrepreneurs globally, it’s only with the benefit of hindsight that I understand why I'm so passionate about what we do.

For me, I feel called to lead an 'extraordinary life' and for others to experience the same thing.

Extraordinary doesn’t have to mean sending rockets into space (although wouldn’t that be cool! #elonenvy).

It just means leading a life that’s anything other than, well, ordinary.

You see, mediocrity scares me. It’s like a big golem rearing it’s ugly head over my shoulder, pushing me to be a bit better each week, month and year.

Sure, I’m not the most accomplished, good looking or successful person here. I’m just working to be a little better every year and hopefully inspiring other leaders to do the same.

We had our best January ever.
 
Double. Nearly triple the registrations from last year.

Revenue-wise, it was a great month.
 
From the outside, you might assume that means high-fives, deep breaths, maybe a quiet week to enjoy the win.
 
The reality?
 
We’ve been bleeding from the eyeballs trying to ship a brand-new platform, migrate customers, onboard new ones properly, and keep everyone activated.
 
We spent heavily on development. We put senior coaches on almost every session to make sure the experience was delivered. 

WhatsApp sprint groups running 24/7 with 100+ clients. 
Constant messages. Constant decisions.
 
At the same time, my wife was away for a couple of weeks.
 
So I was up at 4am prepping workshops. 
Kids up at 7:30. Breakfast. Nanny at 8:30. Live session at 9.
 
Long days. Tight margins for error. High stakes.
 
It was our best month ever.
 
And it was brutal.
 
I think this is the part of business that rarely gets shown.
 
The scoreboard might look great.
 
But if you’re building something real, something growing, something evolving  there are seasons where success and pressure arrive in the same package.

Every founder should have 2 lists:
 
List 1: What drains you

Here's what ended up on mine…
 
WHAT DRAINS ME:
→ Other people's opinions of my decisions
→ Whether the economy tanks next quarter
→ What my competitors are doing
→ Everything I "should" be doing
→ The traffic being mental
 
WHAT DRIVES ME:
→ My morning routine and how I start each day
→ How I choose to respond when things go sideways
→ The relationships I invest time in
→ The skills I'm building this month
→ My mindset when I wake up
 
Most entrepreneurs spend 80% of their energy on the first list.
 
I was definitely one of them.
 
Constantly stressed about things completely outside my control…
 
Then I met someone who flipped this entirely.
 
They obsess over list two.
 
And when you make that shift:
 
1️⃣ Your stress disappears
→ You stop fighting battles you can't win
→ All that energy flows into winnable fights instead
 
2️⃣ Your results compound faster

Caring too much about your clients is why you’re burned out
 
A lot of the founders I speak with are passionate about helping their people.
 
But they go about it the wrong way.
 
They assume:
 
“If I give more of my time, I’m serving them better.”
 
Not true.
 
The more time you give away, the thinner you spread yourself.
 
Which means each customer gets less of you.
 
And sometimes the ‘you’ they get isn’t the best.
 
I feel sorry for those clients who have to deal with founders after 12 hours of calls!
 
In a way, giving people your time is actually a disservice.

You might think your clients pay for access…
 
But that’ll only be the case if that’s what you sell.
 
If you focus on selling the prize, they won’t care if they can message you on Slack.
 
They’ll only care about whether or not you help them achieve their goals.

Many founders love the idea of an exit.
 
You build a business up, then receive a fat pay cheque when you sell it.
 
What’s not to love?!
 
Very few don’t prepare themselves for life after.
 
Because while spending your days surfing or writing a screenplay sounds good…
 
The founders capable of building a business worth buying aren’t like normal people.
 
They’re creators, builders, innovators.
 
They need an outlet.
