Are companies ready to address this now, or will we still be writing the same conclusion in next year’s report?

Companies ask employees to cancel 1 meeting per day. Guess which meetings get axed first?

The "check-ins."

If you're labeling something a "check-in," you're basically asking to be deprioritized. You're signaling: "This meeting has no specific purpose beyond me wanting to talk to you."

That doesn't cut it anymore.

We need to work harder to add value.

How?

Know your stakeholders’ objectives. All of them.

→ Company objectives - What metrics is their department measured on? Revenue targets? Efficiency gains? Customer satisfaction scores?

→ Team objectives - What's their immediate team trying to accomplish this quarter? New product launch? Process improvement? Headcount reduction?

→ Personal objectives - What does success look like for them individually? Promotion criteria? Visibility with leadership? Solving a specific pain point for their boss? (These are the most important ones, by the way.)

Then structure every meeting around moving one of those forward.

Lead with it. "I wanted to talk about how we can help you hit that Q4 efficiency target you mentioned."

When you tie your agenda to their goals, your meetings don't get canceled. They get prioritized.

2026 H1 Customer Success Snack topics

Customer Success has hit a breaking point. The human-driven model that worked for 20 years is cracking under pressure.

For two decades, the approach was to hire CSMs to manage customer relationships. One person handling 10-100 accounts through personal touchpoints and regular conversations.

That model is becoming unsustainable.

The business environment has fundamentally shifted. Boards prioritize profitability over pure growth. Companies need to manage hundreds or thousands of customers efficiently while protecting margins. At the same time, customers expect instant, frictionless experiences (the kind they get from their favorite consumer apps).

The old human-heavy model can't deliver both.

That’s why Tech Touch became the industry’s answer.

Technology now drives scale.

Each replaces manual tasks that once filled a CSM’s calendar.

Amy Carlson from Typeform said something during an assessment call last week that stuck with me:

"As a leader you can fail, but you can never be surprised."

She was talking about data ownership in Customer Success. And she's absolutely right.

Customer Success teams are structurally dependent on other functions for critical account intelligence. 

– Product owns usage data. 
– Sales controls contract details. 
– Finance has payment history.

That’s why most Customer Success teams can't answer basic questions about their accounts:

→ Why is this customer at risk?
→ How engaged are they with the product?
→ What's blocking their renewal?

The answers exist somewhere in the organization. But Customer Success doesn't have access to them.

BUT

Some teams have solved for this.

They've built systems that consolidate the signals that matter: health score automation, renewal scoring models, engagement tracking that captures both product behavior and relationship strength.

They own their data. 
Which means they control their outcomes.

Amy's insight gets to the core issue: the difference between reactive and strategic Customer Success comes down to data ownership.

When you own your data, 
you stop getting surprised. 
You start leading.

Why do we forgive human mistakes but crucify AI for the same thing?

When a CSM forgets to follow up, we say, → "They're stretched thin. It happens."

When an automated email hits the wrong segment, we panic. → "See? This is why we can’t trust automation."

It’s ironic.

Our entire profession is built on managing human imperfection.

→ Health scores exist to catch when customers fall off track.
→ Playbooks exist because people need reminders.
→ Success plans exist because adoption happens in stages.

But when it comes to automation, we expect flawless execution from day one.

I see that companies that embrace imperfect automation alongside imperfect humans are the only ones able to scale their customer success motions.

They test. They iterate. They accept that a digital touchpoint might miss the mark at first (just like a human one does).

The breakthrough happens when you stop comparing automated motions to an imaginary perfect standard. Compare them to your current reality instead.

Is your automated onboarding sequence better than the onboarding emails that sometimes don't get sent at all?

That's the actual question.
