Helping heirs and executors find and get their inheritance

I help executors and heirs find inheritance assets.  

You know those scenes in movies where everyone gathers for the reading of the will and the attorney lists all the assets that the deceased left behind?  Well, I’ve got some news for you.  It just doesn’t happen this way. 

Whether or not there was a will, most people don’t leave a detailed list of what they owned, where it is located, or how to get it. This is often left to the executor, the lawyers, or me. 

This is what I do.   

I also locate missing heirs and connect them with their inheritance. 

I’ve always enjoyed putting together the pieces of the puzzle.  As a kid, Encyclopedia Brown was my favorite book series.  Here was a boy my age playing private detective and solving mysteries in his neighborhood. 

Then came Indiana Jones. Ever since cinema’s greatest treasure hunter captured ten year old me’s imagination, I’ve long loved the idea of searching high and low and doing whatever it takes to find and bring home valuable items others hid somewhere or maybe even forgot about. 

Well, life set in and I followed the ordinary path of college and law school.  The intrigue of searching for treasure, though, never left me.  A few years into my legal career, 

I get the fun and thrill everyday of looking for the assets that the deceased left behind.  My team and I do all the digging and then, when we find something, put in the legwork so the heirs can inherit it. I also get the satisfaction of relieving our clients of the stress that comes with being an executor.  

They can sleep better at night knowing that the toughest part of the job, finding and recovering the deceased’s assets, is in good hands.

ProVisors South Orlando-The Give & Gain Group showed up BIG yesterday!

ProVisors South Orlando's in-person meeting had the kind of energy you can’t manufacture — the kind that only happens when genuine givers show up ready to support each other.

I find missing heirs and inheritance assets

One little typo can make all the difference

As some of you know, I run the Miami half-marathon every winter to raise funds and awareness for Chai Lifeline, an amazing organization that has done so much for so many children with life-threatening and terminal conditions as well as their families

My eighteen-year old daughter has a very rare blood condition—1 in 10 million—and Chai Lifeline has been there for her and our entire family

Anyway, a friend of mine donated the other day, so I texted him the following: “Thank you for the generous donation?”

I didn’t notice that I failed to end the message with a❗instead of ❓

It came to my attention when said friend responded with, “Was [$X] not sufficient?”

We both had a laugh when I clarified my text 🤣 

Fortunately, I was immediately able to rectify the typo but with a last will and testament, it’s usually too late

After all, most people don't proofread their wills after signing them

The documents just go into a drawer until the signer has left this world, at which point there is no fixing it

A missing or additional letter or digit can make a world of difference in an estate proceeding

If, for example, I find during an asset search that the deceased had crypto but the key had even one letter or digit wrong, it could mean the heirs not getting access to the account

Likewise, if I’m looking for a missing heir and I don’t have the correct name—e.g., Robinson vs. Robison—that heir might never get their inheritance

So, the moral of the story is proofread, proofread, proofread

I don’t mean to go off on a rant here but…

My team and I send a lot of Freedom of Information Act (“FOIA”) requests to government agencies all over the country to find out what they are holding for people, businesses and nonprofits

This money can be from uncashed checks like tax refunds or vendor payments 

It can also be inheritances where the beneficiaries’ identities or whereabouts are unknown

Then there is all the extra money left from foreclosure auctions where the buyer paid more than was owed but the old owner walked away, assuming all was lost

Those are just some examples

Fortunately, most states make this information freely available to whoever asks for whatever reason

One county employee, though, recently provided a list with a caution against using it for commercial purposes

I didn’t bother to respond that the law of her state explicitly provides that anyone can utilize FOIA for any reason

Yes, my company takes a fee for the work we do with no apology

We invest a good deal of money and time to find funds that the owners would never know about and might well struggle with claiming

After all, very few government agencies do much to find the owners or help them with what can often be a difficult claims process

So, Ms. Bossy Boss, if you’re reading this, I hope the next time our paths cross is when I’m helping someone claim their money
