I get the whole "it's just SEO" makes y'all feel comfortable, safe, and confident in a time where things are confusing and change is coming at you from all directions. After all, who wants to admit they don't know what's going on or what to do? 

That argument makes you look silly in the eyes of people that control your future. It's an indication that you don't understand how business works and you're limiting your own opportunities. These are commonly entrenched problems that the SEO community generally has that are showing up glaringly now. 

But, I got time today, let's get into your arguments:

Point: "Tell me what do you do differently for GEO that you don't do for SEO?"
Counterpoint: This is perhaps the most basic and corniest of gotchas that I see used. Yes, there is a high overlap between tactics that for legacy search and AI surfaces -- FOR NOW. This is quickly becoming less true with better understanding of query fan out, the advent of memory/hyper-personalization, integration of agents, direct feeds, and software integrations. 

BUT even if it is true, it doesn't matter. The channels treat the inputs differently and there is a different value exchange in AI Search. 

Consider this: PR, link building, fundraising, and outbound sales all employ the same tactics. You build a list, write some form letters, send a bunch of emails, and keep going until you get the outcomes you want. Yet, no one is conflating those as the same thing. Those are often 4 different teams and 4 different budget line items in the same company. That's because, while the surfaces are exactly the same, the value exchange is different. 

The "it's just SEO" argument is cutting you off from this maturity within a business. C-level people understand this. You do not.

Point: *AI Search uses retrieval, so SEO matters more than ever"
Counterpoint: I don't know how many ways I can say it. SEO has not kept up with advances in retrieval. Most of the major legacy SEO tools are giving you insights and data based on old paradigms that don't align with the information retrieval state of the art.

This argument is reflective of an idealistic form of SEO that very few people are actually doing. It's Mostly "Python SEOs" because they can build for the gaps. I'd argue these those people are engineers, but frankly, until the software catches up to the SOTA, it requires more than SEO to do SEO. To be clear, this has been my position since before the genAI revolution.

Finally, the data indicates that optimizing the same way for retrieval is not enough. ZipTie.dev's data from May showed being in the top 10 gave you a 25% chance of being a source for AI surfaces. New data from Profound indicates a 19% overlap between Google Search and ChatGPT visibility. Just this week Josh Blyskal shared data reinforcing that it's less about position and more about relevance. 

So, if you're happy with a 20% hit rate, then sure, it's just SEO. While we're here, tell me more about how sand tastes too.
