In my former life, I was a foreign correspondent. I spent more than a decade working as a journalist for BBC World, CNBC & Dateline. 
My films won New York Festival TV & Film Awards, UN Media Awards, a Walkley Award & a Logie nomination.

I've interviewed Brad Pitt on the red carpet, Bashar Al Assad in his Palace in Damascus & I once had the fun task of speaking on stage after Obama. 

I'm a Tory Burch Fellow & was the recipient of a grant from Sara Blakley's Spanx Foundation.

broke his neck surfing. 

We’d gone to his hometown so I could meet his parents for the first time.

The doctors told him:

“Mate, you’re unbelievably f*cking lucky to have survived.

If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do, now would be the time.”

Instead of showering me with more love (lol) he chose to run. 
A LOT. 

His goal? 1 marathon.
To prove he could.

Then he got unhinged and decided to run all 6 World Marathon Majors. 😱

BIG Problem: Boston. 

The world’s oldest marathon.
The hardest to get into on the planet.

You can’t just sign up. 
You have to earn your spot by running fast enough. 
Really bloody fast. 

Like “train for years and maybe still not make it” fast. 😬 

Ryan’s times? 

Impressive & improving a LOT (he’s shaved an hour off his time since starting)
Hut let’s be honest - he’s more #FinishLine Dad than Olympic Hopeful 😉🏃

So, he did what any reasonable person would do: He weaponized his accident.

Can’t qualify on speed? 
Use the broken neck card. 
Works every time.

Applied for a charity slot. 
They said yes.
The catch? He has to raise $10k.

He announced it today. 
And our friends are OTT generous - he’s already halfway to his target 😱 

**Ryan and I are matching any contributions made today.**

And tbh, Hugo and I desperately need him to hit this goal asap so our dinner table conversations can return to literally anything other than marathon splits and anti-chafing strategies. 🤣

I walked right past her. 🙈

My 70-year-old neighbor.

The one who decorates her yard for every holiday. 
The one my son Hugo absolutely adores.
She was RIGHT THERE. Smiling. Ready to chat.

And I completely missed her.
Why? Because I was THAT person 😬

Buried in my phone doing... honestly, I can't even tell you what. 

By the time I looked up, all I could offer was an embarrassing:
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!"

She gave me that look. And she was absolutely right to judge me.

Phone zombies are MY pet peeve.
I hate seeing people glued to screens while life happens around them.

And yet there I was, being the EXACT person I can't stand.

But here's what stings most:

I set a goal this year to build stronger ties in my local community.

Hosting backyard wines. Planning holiday drinks. Organizing a spring soiree.

And yet - I walked right past one of my favorite neighbors because I wasn't paying attention?!

Presence requires planning.

So I'm making two changes. Starting now.

1. Phone in my pocket. Or at home.

No more scrolling while walking. 
No more checking while talking. 
No more missing teh real world go by why I'm living variously through a screen.

2. I'm blocking out my ENTIRE 2026 next week.

Australia trips. 
Girls weekends. 
Family vacations. 
The fun stuff first.

Then PepTalkHer Salon Lunches. 
Our Monthly workshops.
 Cohort launches.

My calendar. My priorities. 
Before anyone else gets a say.

Because if I don't decide what matters? Someone else's urgency will fill the space.
And I'll keep walking past the moments and people that actually matter.

One conversation I can't stop thinking about.

Between the nostalgia and the Dawson's Tears themed margaritas (I ❤️ a theme!) the same topic kept coming up.

Turns out a LOT of my mates are in a weird holding pattern right now.

Not miserable... but not lit up. 
Not underperforming... but definitely underpaid. 
Not panicking about AI... but quietly nervous.

💻“I don’t know if I even like my job right now.”
💸 “I’m pretty sure I’m being low-key screwed on pay.”
🤨“I know something needs to change .... I just don’t know what.”

So this week I polled the PepTalkHer community.

How many times this week did you want to absolutely LOSE IT?

For me?  At least three.

😡The mansplainer. 
😤The meeting that should've been an email. 
🤬The "well, actually..." guy in my DMs 

But here's the thing about having a hot temper:

You can WASTE it or WEAPONIZE it.

Before I spiral, I try to remember The Rule of 5:

→ Will this matter in 5 hours? 
→ 5 days? 
→ 5 years? 

Nine times out of ten? The rage is not worth my energy.

So I save my fire for the one time in ten when it IS.

Perspective isn't about being calm. It's about being SMART with your rage.

And Plot twist: The Rule of 5 doesn't just work for anger - run it on your 2026 goals.

That pitch deck you've rewritten 47 times?
That project you're stressed about? 
The colleague driving you wild?

Will any of it *really* matter in 5 years??!

If not, why are you aiming your fire there? 🤔
And what would happen if you redirected that energy in a productive direction?

May I suggest SNACKS to make it more palatable!  🍫

As part of my end-of-year ritual, I grab my Trader Joe's dark chocolate peanut butter cups, pour a green tea & open my spreadsheets to get brutally honest about my money.

💰Where am I sitting financially?
🤔What do I want to change for next year? 
🏖️How far am I from retiring on a beach with zero emails?

(My original plan was to tap out at 40. Cute, right? Life laughed.
So now I’m tracking for 45 and honestly… I’m into the new timeline.)

So, my bi annual financial checkup requires me to peek at my 401k.

This year, I was into the balance.

Hate is a strong word, so let's go with SERIOUSLY, SERIOUSLY DESPISE.

When Vanguard bailed on their small-biz customers a few years back, we all were unceremoniously shoved into Ascensus retirement as our provider without so much as a courtesy text.

The switch over was awful, which I can forgive.

But there are SO many things that continue to make it a truly horrific user experience.

The worst, you can’t even see your own year-over-year performance inside the dashboard. 

I can track my sleep, my steps and my cycle in real time… but not my retirement performance?

‼️Make it make sense!!!!?!??!?!‼️

Is anyone doing 401k retirement plans well in the USA? 
Or is this an industry ripe for disruption?
