Hi, I'm Meaghan. I began my career working in digital journalism and digital content marketing. In 2020, I joined an early-stage startup as the company’s ninth hire (and the first business-side hire). My role as a Marketing Associate required me to wear many hats - including serving as a member of the hiring team for all new business-side hires. This experience introduced me to the world of talent acquisition, and I quickly developed a deep passion for recruiting and hiring. I pitched a new role for myself to join my company's talent team - and I got the job! I've worked in recruiting ever since.

The biggest mistake I see job seekers make?

(one that keeps them searching far longer than necessary)

Trying to do their job search alone.

Job searching without help is lonely and discouraging.

Job searching with help is motivating, and far more effective.

When I tell clients this, I usually hear:

After 5 years in her previous industry, my client Alli landed 2 project management interviews, and an offer.

"Why are you looking for a new opportunity?"

⤵ When a recruiter asks you this in an interview, they want:

1. To better understand your goals
2. To see if your career goals align with the role they're hiring for

What they don't want:

- All the gory details of why you don't like your current job
- Negative reviews of your manager and teammates

This question is not intended to provide you with a platform for venting.

Instead, it's a question to help the recruiter determine if the role they're trying to fill is aligned with your priorities and with your career development plans.

So rather than use this question to air your current grievances...

...instead, use it as an opportunity to share your future desires. ☀️
