Quitting a job is okay. 
Moving on is okay. 
Struggling is okay.

What’s not okay is telling yourself you should be grateful while your value goes unseen.

And yet, many high performers do exactly that.
Sometimes for years.

Here's why: 
→ You were taught loyalty is a virtue
→ You were told things would improve if you just stayed patient
→ You learned to make your self‑worth conditional on finally winning approval

So you worked harder.

Professionals terrified of admitting they need to upskill or ask for stretch projects.

Most people only notice burnout when it’s too late.

It starts quietly, beneath the surface.

This post from my friend Kam Singh is one of the clearest breakdowns I’ve seen 👇

What people usually notice:

→ Someone seems tired
→ Less engaged in meetings
→ A few mood swings
→ They “just need a break”

But that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

What we don’t see?

→ Fear of being replaced.
→ Constant self-criticism.
→ Guilt for setting boundaries.
→ Anxiety behind forced smiles.
→ Exhaustion from office politics.
→ A deep emotional fatigue that sleep alone can’t fix.

Easy to work with often means easy to walk over. 

Say yes more than you should.
Stay agreeable when something feels off.

And the moment you stop?

The labels start appearing.
“Difficult.”
“Too much.”
“Not a team player.”

It happens the minute you stop absorbing what was never yours to carry.
The extra work.
The blurred boundaries.
Expectations that keep expanding while recognition stays the same.

So you start to wonder if maybe you are the problem.
Maybe you pushed too hard.
Maybe you should have handled it differently.
Maybe being easier would make life simpler.

But here’s the pattern worth noticing.
People rarely call you difficult when you’re doing things that benefit you.
They use it when you stop doing things that benefit them.

When you hold the line on quality. 
When you question decisions that don't make sense. 
When you stop shrinking to make someone else comfortable.

Depth unsettles people who prefer the surface.
Asking one more question.
Raising the bar on standards.
Expecting fairness in workload, pay, and credit.

None of that is “too much.”

I see this all the time.
High achievers working harder than everyone around them.

Staying late.

Here’s the part I’m going to keep saying out loud:
In the wrong environment, effort doesn’t grow your success.

It leaks.

→ Your best work disappears into someone else’s promotion deck
→ Colleagues doing less get more recognition
→ The development plan has been “coming soon” for 18 months

Long hours.
Total dedication.
Too little in return.

The problem isn’t your work ethic.
It’s the place you’re spending it.

Run a simple Leak Audit:

Who planted seeds you'll never trace back. 

Right now, someone is:

Some roles were never meant to be forever.

They were the crash course.
The contrast.
The wake‑up call you never asked for.

But somewhere between the first red flag and today, the shrinking became normal.

It sounds like:
→ “I don’t recognise myself at work anymore.”
→ “I edit what I say so I don’t rock the boat.”
→ “I feel smaller in this role than I did three years ago.”
→ “I’m exhausted from pretending I’m fine with all of this.”
→ “It looks great on paper, but I hate who I’m becoming here.”

That’s not just “a rough patch.”
That’s a slow, steady trade:
Less voice.
Less boundary.

In exchange for the illusion of stability or the quiet hope it’ll finally pay off.

Here’s what that trade is really costing you:
↳ Your edge, because you swallow ideas you know will be dismissed.

And the hardest part?
The longer you stay, the more normal the shrinking feels.
Until you can’t remember who you were before you started editing yourself.

Try this quick audit:

1️⃣ Who were you at work three years ago?
– What did you stand for?
– How did you show up in meetings?
– What energy did you bring to challenges?

2️⃣ Who are you at work now?
– What do you avoid saying?
– Where do you make yourself smaller?
– What would shock your past self?

3️⃣ Then ask:
“If I stay another year, will this gap get bigger or smaller?”
