The danger of working with low-paying clients isn't just tied to the payout, but to the low self-esteem mindset they leave on you.
 

And I'm talking from first-hand experience. 

A couple of years ago, when I'd stayed without clients for months, I decided to do the last thing I never thought I'd do.

And it was a mistake I wish I had never made. 

So, I pitched this local client who was looking for writers at $0.001/word (I still cringe when typing it). 

Of course, he hired me on the spot; it was a good deal for him. Getting someone with solid experience and a proven track record to work for free was a pretty good deal.

He sent me five 2000-word articles, which took me around two weeks to deliver. 

However, the issues began with revisions. Every sentence needed to be rewritten, and I spent even more days trying to fine-tune every piece. 

I'd become stressed whenever I saw his email because I knew it would be another set of instructions that would just drain me.

Eventually, I realized that this wasn't working, and I stopped working with the client after a month. It didn't take another month before I landed a better client. 

While the low pay bothered me, what really got to me were the client’s negative comments. 

At one point, I started feeling like I’d lost my craft, something I’d spent four years building while working with some of the best companies out there.

That one-month experience almost pushed me back to a beginner’s mindset.

That’s the real danger of working with low-paying clients; they don’t just drain your energy, they chip away at your creativity, confidence, and standards.

For a long time, I believed that working with certain companies just wasn’t for people like me.



Whenever I saw big names like Buffer, Semrush, Ahrefs, Animalz, or Beam Content 💡 I’d think, “They’re out of my league.” So, I never applied.

That inferiority complex kept me working with companies that didn’t value the craft.

Of course, I did land a few good clients but I thought it was just out of good luck.

I told myself that a young writer from a small town in Kenya couldn’t possibly compete with content marketers from New York or California.

Then last year, I came across a Bible verse that completely changed how I think.

Proverbs 28:1 — “The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.”

I’d read that verse many times before, but this time, one word stood out, bold. It kept ringing in my ears for days. 

I asked myself, “What’s really stopping me from achieving what others in my space have achieved?”

Then I remembered something Chimma Mmeje once said, that she puts on her “Tom Bro” attitude whenever she feels inferior.

And Erin Balsa naming her site Haus of Bold to help brands create bold content.

It all came back to one thing: boldness. That was what I’d been missing.

So I made a decision to act boldly.

I already knew I was a good content writer, clients had told me that before.

I built a professional portfolio with solid samples on authory, refined my LinkedIn profile, and started applying for those “dream” jobs that used to intimidate me. Even roles outside of writing, if I knew I could handle them, I applied.

And I made sure every application reflected confidence and expertise.

Since then, three incredible things have happened:

1. I’ve connected with industry leaders to talk about content and AI.

2. I got to manage an e-commerce store, handling page design and product copy (thanks, YouTube tutorials!).

3. And most recently, I landed a life-changing role with Animalz. (Still letting that sink in.)

Here’s the lesson I’ve learned:

It’s not that you’re not good enough. Sometimes, what’s really holding you back is the fear to be bold.

Take that step today. Put your faith in God, and watch things begin to change.

The internet is overflowing with generic, copy-paste content. Sora just released a new AI-generating video model, which just tells we’re about to see even more noise added to the pile.

Here’s the thing though. This is a huge opportunity for content marketers as it's a chance to create something different: content that actually speaks to humans.

Now, I know the term thought leadership has been thrown around so much it’s kind of lost its meaning.

I used to be confused by it too.

I thought thought leadership meant spraying stats on an article and adding quotes from “industry experts” you just connected with on LinkedIn.

Turns out, that’s not it.

I also reached out to Ryan Baum 🌱 one of the contributors, and he shared one killer insight for freelance writers who want to create real thought leadership content.

Everybody Wants Thought Leadership Content. But How Do You Do It, Exactly?

The best clients hire the best writers. This is a lie. 


For a long time, I thought I needed to be the best writer to work with cool clients. 

So I'd do what every writer does:

- Learn more about the craft.
- Take as many writing courses as I could.
- Create the most SEO-optimized content.
- Show clients how my work was doing great. 

However, the result was the same. 

I kept landing average clients who hesitated to pay more, mostly because I kept telling myself I wasn’t a good enough writer yet.

And sometimes, I didn’t even feel good enough for the average clients, so I settled for low-paying gigs instead. Big mistake. Most of them turned into complete nightmares (story for another day).

That's when something clicked. 

I didn't have to be the best to work with the best. 

I only needed to be the most relevant to work with the best. Let me break it down further. 

The word "best" is a subjective term, and being too good at writing in general doesn't necessarily mean you can write for top-tier companies like Buffer. 

It reaches a point where clients seek a relevant writer. This is someone who thoroughly understands their industry and has published samples to prove it. 

For instance, you might have written a killer BOFU article that ranks high and drives traffic and sales for a duvet company.

But if you send that same sample to a client in healthcare AI, your chances of getting hired drop to zero.

Now, if you had samples that clearly show you understand the healthcare AI space — how it works, the language, the challenges — you’d instantly stand out and have a much better shot at landing the gig.

Here's the thing. 

Don't just aim to be a good writer. Instead, pick one or two industries, master it, and create high-quality samples in that field. 

When the best client will come through, they will find you ready.

Brands fail at content marketing because of one thing.


✔They may have the budget 
✔They may have good writers 
✔They may even have the most surefire content strategy.

But all these don't matter if their published articles lack originality and expertise.

Why?

Every company is creating content, and it's boring readers who consume the same old regurgitated content. 

People want more content that can give them unique insights they won't get elsewhere.

That should be the goal behind every article you write.

So the million-dollar question is this - how do you create original content that shows your expertise?

Simple, become an "expert" in your industry.

This is what I mean. 

Most companies hire writers on Fiverr to create 2000-word pieces for $20 with the hopes of driving ROI like the top dogs in the industry.

As a result, they get recycled and tasteless pieces.

Here's the thing.

Originality and expertise go beyond what's on the SERPs.

That means you should invest in writers that can go beyond Google search.

These are tenacious writers who can scour the farthest corners of the internet and gather expert opinions to add to their pieces.

Creating such content takes time, but the results are remarkable.

I think we've got it all wrong about creativity in writing. 


What comes to mind about creativity might be:

- Using a relatable story
- Creating GIFs
- Adding videos to your piece
- Keeping a consistent flow

While all these are good, I believe creativity is more.

A creative writer is someone who makes readers stop and think, “Well, I didn’t see that coming.” Kinda like how you react when Mr Beast pulls off something wild in one of his videos.

In short, creativity is about going that extra mile to do something your audience didn’t see coming.

But to make it land, your creativity needs to click with the people you’re speaking to.

For example, if you’re writing a BOFU piece comparing two products, actually using both tools can give you way deeper insights. 

(Funny enough, that’s something most BOFU content skips entirely.)

From there, you can build your content around your own experience. Get creative by sharing a quick story about how you used a specific feature and what kind of results it gave you. 

That kind of detail is fresh and original. It’s not something you just grabbed from someone else’s blog.

At the end of the day, being creative will take much of your time, but that's the price you pay if you want to create high-quality content.

Founders shy away from creating comparison pages and BOFU blog posts because they’re worried about legal trouble.


Fair concern.

I once spoke to a founder who told me he doesn't want to mention competitors because it won’t sit well with the company's legal team.

I get it. No one wants a cease-and-desist letter landing on their desk.

But here’s the good news: comparative marketing is perfectly legal and a smart strategy. 

When done right, it doesn’t just help your business, it helps potential customers make informed decisions.

That said, there are some rules to follow.

1️⃣ Be truthful. No exaggerations, no bending the facts.
2️⃣ Stay non-deceptive. Don’t mislead or misrepresent what your tool (or your competitor’s) can or can’t do.

Because here’s the thing: great BOFU content isn’t just about clever copy. It’s about having a product that delivers. 

If your product isn’t up to par, even the best marketers (yes, even David Ogilvy) won’t be able to spin it into success.

So before you invest in BOFU content, make sure your product is rock solid. Then, build comparison pages that are transparent, insightful, and genuinely helpful. 

Do that, and you’ll start turning skeptics into customers in no time.

B2B SaaS brands: You have no business chasing traffic.


Such a bold claim, right?

I think I should set up the context first.

Traffic is great, and it's one of the main goals of content marketing. But once you’ve got it, what comes next?

I hear the crickets. 

We shouldn't focus solely on traffic-generating keywords, but also on transactional keywords that generate revenue. 

I get it, those big, juicy SEO graphs are tempting, and you probably dream of having one of your own someday.

Here's a fun fact. 

Hubspot has lost most of its traffic (some say as much as 80%).

But they’re not out of business because they’ve zeroed in on keywords that target specific products and actions that users need help with. 

As a result, their search volume for transactional keywords has grown significantly.

For example, they are the top organic results for keywords like "CRM software" and "HubSpot CRM." These are profitable keywords. 

Here's the thing: content has many goals, like an octopus with many tentacles

But let's not focus on one tentacle and the other that genuinely matters. 

That's driving leads and conversions. 

And to do that, you need a writer who has a way with words but is still a marketer at heart.
