Women's Alzheimer's Movement

Every 65 seconds, a new brain develops Alzheimer’s. Two-thirds of the brains with Alzheimer’s belong to women, and no one knows why that is. The Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement is determined to find out. Founded by Maria Shriver, The Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to raising awareness about women’s increased risk for Alzheimer’s and to educating the public — women and men — about lifestyle changes they can make to protect their brain health. Through our annual campaigns and initiatives, we also raise dollars to fund women-based Alzheimer’s research at leading scientific institutions, so that we can better understand this mind-blowing disease and hopefully get closer to a cure.

Maria Shriver is a mother of four, a grandmother, an Emmy, Gracie and Peabody award-winning journalist and story-teller, a seven-time New York Times best-selling author, an NBC News Special Anchor, founder of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement and Strategic Advisor on Women’s Health and Alzheimer’s at Cleveland Clinic. She is also the founder of Shriver Media and co-founder of the mission-driven brain health and wellness brand, MOSH.

A trailblazer for empowering women, Shriver uses her voice and her platforms to advance some of our nation’s most pressing issues affecting women and women’s health. In 2010, she broke new ground when, in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, The Shriver Report: A Woman’s Nation Takes on Alzheimer’s reported for the first time that women are at an increased risk for the disease. Shriver went on to receive the first-ever Alzheimer’s Association Lifetime Achievement Award for a lifetime of activism and leadership. Today, the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement at Cleveland Clinic is the preeminent organization funding gender-based Alzheimer’s research in the world.

She also worked tirelessly on behalf of women and families, particularly those living on the brink of poverty, during her time as First Lady of California from 2003-2010. In 2016, Shriver was inducted into the California Hall of Fame, which she brought to life during her time as First Lady. She also received the Best Buddies Spirit of Leadership Award for her life-long advocacy on behalf of those with intellectual disabilities. 

Shriver’s life and career are driven by her belief that everyone has the ability to be an “Architect of Change” and make the world a better place. Her for-benefit media company Shriver Media produces content across multiple platforms, including books, digital series, films, and documentaries such as HBO’s Paycheck to Paycheck and The Alzheimer’s Project.

Shriver Media’s digital platform, The Sunday Paper, is an award-winning publication that elevates the voices of today’s greatest hearts and minds and is a roadmap to living life Above the Noise. Shriver's weekly Sunday Paper column, “I’ve Been Thinking,” is the recipient of the prestigious Gracie Award.

In the rush to be smarter, faster, more efficient we have a unique opportunity. Not to outpace machines, but to out-human them.
To lead with empathy, to listen more deeply, and to bring love and care into every room we walk into.

That’s the kind of leadership I believe in. It starts by asking ourselves what kind of world we’re building, and what kind of humans we want to be.
