Luke Wroblewski

LukeW is an internationally recognized digital product leader who has designed and built software used by billions of people worldwide.

Luke is currently a Managing Director and head of product at Sutter Hill Ventures. Earlier he was a Product Director at Google where he founded and led product management, user experience design and user research for Google's cross-product efforts on iOS and Android in addition to company-wide metrics & analytics, Blogger, Social Good, Location Sharing, Notifications, and more. 

Luke joined Google when it acquired Polar in 2014 where he was the CEO and Co-founder. Before founding Polar, Luke was the Chief Product Officer and Co-Founder of Bagcheck which was acquired by Twitter in 2011.

Prior to founding start-ups, Luke was an Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) at Benchmark Capital, the Chief Design Architect (VP) at Yahoo!, Lead User Interface Designer at eBay, and a Senior Interface Designer at NCSA: the birthplace of the first popular graphical Web browser, NCSA Mosaic.

Luke is the author of three popular Web design books (Mobile First, Web Form Design & Site-Seeing: A Visual Approach to Web Usability) in addition to many articles about digital product design and strategy. He is also a consistently top-rated speaker at conferences and companies around the world, and a Co-founder and former Board member of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA).

Luke also founded LukeW Ideation & Design, a product strategy and design consultancy, and taught graduate interface design courses at the University of Illinois.

But the bottlenecks have always been alignment & decision-making.

I created a Web form designer/developer for Intent by training it on my Web Form Design book and 100+ articles on Web forms to apply the best practices found within. You can throw a complete garbage PDF form at it and a highly usable, design best practice abiding form pops out the other side in minutes.

here's what it applied when doing so: 

Top-aligned labels:  fastest completion times per eye-tracking research

Field sizes as affordances: zip code is narrow, full name is full-width

Single vertical scan line: everything flows top-to-bottom, left-aligned

Smart defaults: today's date pre-filled, city pre-filled as "San Jose"

No secondary "Cancel" button: removes temptation to abandon

Back button is de-emphasized (plain text link, not a button)

Progressive disclosure: parent/guardian fields hidden unless "Under 18: Yes" selected

Inline validation on blur: never while typing

Top-level error summary + inline field errors (double visual emphasis)

Submit button shows spinner and disables to prevent double-submission

Keyboard navigation:  Enter advances steps, proper tab order throughout

Accessible: <fieldset>/<legend>, role attributes, aria-label on legal text, for/id label pairing

Mobile responsive: stacked layout on small screens

- a team of the right people for the job, often specialists
- to give the team the information they need to complete the job
- the right environment where the team can coordinate and work safely
