I’m a fan of John Mark Comer. His books have marked key seasons of my life.

When I saw an article in the Gospel Coalition taking a swing at him, I perked up.

Ruthlessly Eliminate All Hurry came to me during a season that could have swallowed me whole. It taught me how to slow down and hear the deeper wisdom and voice of God that is always available.

Live No Lies grounded a coaching process I’d been trained in into something deeply spiritual. It’s brought real power into my life and helped me walk with others as they step into their power and make change for the kingdom of God.

And yes, Practicing the Way can feel like a spiritual buffet at times. But Comer’s central idea, that we are always being formed by something in our culture, and it’s often not the way of Jesus, has spread through the church, especially among younger people hungry for something real

As a student and practitioner of spiritual formation and becoming a spiritual director, these debates matter to me.

TGC, and Tim Keller in particular, have shaped a huge part of my faith journey. Keller’s The Prodigal God transformed my relationship with my dad, and I’ll be forever grateful.

But I’ve also noticed Keller (and TGC) tend to avoid contemplative spirituality altogether. In fact, Keller once called it unbiblical. His concern was that emotions could steer us away from biblical truth.

I know doctrine matters. But when we make doctrine and theology the center of spiritual formation, we risk something tragic: forming people with huge heads, small hearts, and puny bodies.

We become people who know about God but don’t actually walk with God.

Think about the people who radiate Jesus. Were they impressive because of their head knowledge, or did they carry a Presence that made you feel seen, loved, and drawn closer to God?

This is why my men’s group, which a woman leads, doesn’t do weekly Bible study. We stay grounded in Scripture, sometimes reflecting on a few verses. But our real practice is asking:
How’s your heart?
How’s your soul as you walk with the Lord?

We have enough history to know when someone’s answering from their head, not their heart. We don’t gather to explain God. We gather to encounter Him together.

There are times when reading the Bible becomes more than words on a page. Spiritual formation is more than knowing the Bible. If you can’t be alone with God without needing a study or sermon to feed you, something’s missing.

To be formed is to learn how to connect to the Living Word—not just the written one. It’s learning to listen in silence. To sense and feel. To process the inner world where God so often speaks.

This isn’t a rejection of Scripture. It’s the opposite. It’s letting Scripture lead us to the One who breathed it, and us! into being.

When we allow God to form us in heart and body, not just in mind, our faith stops being theory and becomes a living, breathing encounter.
