The Czech hemp cluster (CzecHemp) was founded in 2018 as a non-governmental non-profit cluster organisation of private companies, public sector, research and education entities. Its 40 members are represented by universities, government research institutions, SME’s, MSE’s, NGO’s and individuals. The mission of the cluster is to work on strengthening the hemp and medical cannabis industry in the Czech Republic and create opportunities for cooperation between cluster members. Czechemp is also a member of Czech National cluster association and Platform for Bioeconomy which brings many networking and collaboration opportunities from many different industries.

After spending significant part of my life working in a busy hotel in the rugged and wild west coast of Ireland, I decided to settle down back in the Czech Republic and try to make a living as an editor, translator and journalist. For more than ten years, I am using my education and skills in the field of translatology to bring as much information as possible about medical properties and benefits of cannabis plant to the Czech public and I am actively participating in the whole legalization movement on national as well as international level. I have become involved in organizing several medical conferences, exhibitions as well as the biggest cannabis fair in the world - Prague's Cannafest. Apart from writing, editing and translating, I am also administrating several websites and Facebook pages of my clients. Since 2018 I am also the publisher and editor-in-chief of Czech magazine Konopí and the publisher of English online magazine Cannabis Therapy. Last but not least, in March 2023, I became manager of Czech hemp cluster (CzecHemp).

‼️ Breaking (and Great) News: World-Renowned Psychiatrist and Drug Policy Expert Pavel Bém Set to Become the New National Drug Policy Coordinator🔥

From my point of view, this is fantastic news 🙌

Mr. Bém (also former mayor of #Prague) is widely recognized as one of the leading experts on mental health and drug policy in #Czechia – and someone who really understands how crucial evidence-based, humane and rational approaches are for people who use drugs, their families and the whole society 🌿

I’ve known about this development for about a month from very high-level sources – but I kept completely quiet until it was leaked by mainstream media today 🤐✨

On behalf of our NGOs Racionální regulace and CzecHemp, citizen initiative Rodiny proti prohibici, patient association KOPAC and magazine Konopí, I’m genuinely looking forward to four years of meaningful and constructive cooperation in the field of drug policy, harm reduction and future cannabis and psychedelics regulation🌱 💫

🌿 Czechia’s Medical Cannabis Bottleneck Is Finally Breaking 💪

It is not a widely known fact, but the #Czech medical cannabis program is actually one of the oldest in Europe. Our closest neighbor, #Germany, legalized it only four years after us. 🌍

Yet, thanks to bureaucratic red tape and pharma lobbyists dwelling in the offices of the Czech Ministry of Health, who managed to pass meaningless directives and decrees, the system was effectively broken for many years. The incredibly low numbers of patients, doctors, and grams of cannabis consumed were telling. 🧩

🔧 Things started to look better in 2021 after two significant changes:

👉 removal of the decree allowing only one domestic grower and prohibiting exports
👉  reimbursement by public health insurance of 90% of the price (for up to 30 grams per month)

Since then, the number of patients and grams consumed has been steadily increasing, but it was still nothing like the “German numbers”, because there were only around 200 actively prescribing doctors. This number had basically not changed for the past 5–7 years – until now. 📈

Thanks to a couple of decrees passed this year that removed the worst administrative barriers and included GPs in the list of approved specializations, we are finally moving from just a few dozen pioneers to hundreds of authorized physicians, and prescription numbers are rising month after month. 🩺

Freshly released data from the State Institute for Drug Control (SÚKL) show a significant increase in prescribing since Q2 2025. While there were only 235 doctors in the register in the spring, by mid-summer there were 465. “From the beginning of the year to the end of September, a record 41,008 prescriptions were issued for a total quantity of 314 kilograms,” the Institute added. ✨

This is still very little compared not only to Germany, but also to Israel, Canada, or even the UK. On the other hand, with the number of doctors doubling in just two to three months, we can expect a much faster increase in patient numbers and cannabis consumption in the near as well as the more distant future. 

And what is even more important – nobody in the government and in the opposition is questioning the current changes and everybody is happy about the rising numbers of doctors and patients (unlike the government in Germany). 🚀

⚖️ Landmark Win: Czech Court Spares Patient Prison in Large Cannabis Case🌱

Yesterday was a great day because my good friend, disabled cannabis patient Milos with severe ankylosing spondylitis, was not sent to die slowly in prison for growing (a lot of) cannabis 🎉

Although Milos was realistically facing up to 10 years behind bars – which, given his health, would have amounted to a slow death sentence – he walked away from yesterday's hearing at the District Court in the town of Žďár “only” with a suspended sentence (3 years probation time). 

Under the circumstances (he was caught with more than 130 plants and 7 kilograms of dried buds), this is a fantastic outcome, and huge thanks go to his defence lawyer Jan Poláček (Advokátní kancelář Poláček, Tryznová & Prudlová) and to all members of #Czech cannabis community who supported Milos emotionally and financially through the fundraiser we have organized (two names to name: matěj hollan & Jan Látal)💚🙏

As this case shows, law-enforcement and courts are slowly beginning to take into account the upcoming historic legal change: legalization of home-growing of three plants and the reduction of all criminal penalties related to cannabis in the Czech Republic from 1 January 2026. 

Still, without an experienced defense lawyer, it will remain all too easy to end up in jail for larger amounts⚠️

And there are still hundreds of people rotting behind bars for cannabis "crimes" in our country, whose families are hurting. 

That’s why I kindly ask you to consider contributing to our national crowdfunding campaign on the Znesnáze platform, which aims to raise funds to help others in a similar situation – people criminalized for cannabis, those already serving sentences, and their families. The campaign is organised jointly by two NGOs I co-founded - citizen initiative Families Against Prohibition and the association Rational Regulation🤝

You can find the link to the campaign in comments or send money directly via QR code in the picture. We have already managed to raise about 10 000 EUR of the desired 20 000. And, as we can see from yesterday’s victory, good lawyer can truly make a difference✌️
