This old football stadium in Taiwan has been transformed into a vibrant green oasis for local residents.

The Zhongshan Football Stadium was left unused after 2008.

The space could have remained a concrete relic.

Instead, it became an urban garden where people grow food, meet neighbours, and reshape their city.

I used to think that livestock were ruining our planet 🌎🐑
But then I learned that grazers might actually save it 🤯

Rewilding is not always the solution; sometimes, you need management.
And yes, cows CAN ruin the planet, but that's not the cow's fault; it's the humans' fault for mismanaging the cow. 

Allan Savory taught me that the classic idea of “just let nature rewild the land” only works in humid climates. In places where humidity is not evenly distributed throughout the year, removing animals makes the land collapse.

He explained that the world’s great grasslands were not created by the absence of animals but by their presence. Massive herds, chased by predators, were constantly on the move, fertilising the soil and stimulating new plant growth.

He showed me before-and-after photos of devastated landscapes transformed through planned grazing. Cattle, sheep and goats, when managed holistically, can restore soil, increase water retention and bring ecosystems back to life.

He realised in the 1960s that no machine or technology could ever replace the ecological function of large herbivores. The role animals play in soil formation, nutrient cycling and grassland renewal is irreplaceable.

To manage livestock in a way that heals land rather than harms it, Savory developed Holistic Planned Grazing. It was inspired not by agriculture but by military planning systems designed for unpredictable battlefield conditions.

I asked Savory whether simply leaving land to rewild wouldn’t be better. He showed me a U.S. National Park where livestock were removed seventy years ago. Despite decades of investment, it has continued to desertify and erode.

Savory’s lesson is simple yet radical: in seasonal drylands, rewilding without large herbivores fails. Animals are not the problem. Mismanagement is. With the right planning, livestock become a powerful tool for regeneration.

💥 So: what should you do with this information?

Realize that grazers can be a force of good.
If you decide to eat meat, make sure it's regenerative grass-fed.

and learn from history

Tobacco industry lied 50+ years about the dangers of cigarettes

Asbestos industry lied for 100+ years

Giant fossil fuel companies lied 50+ years about the dangers of global warming

☣️ Pesticide industry has been playing this game as well

1) Spread doubt
2) Hide dangerous effects
3) Pay scientists to say their product is safe

This comes from a classic playbook, very well documented in the book and film Merchants of Doubt.

I'm not really angry that companies are doing this, I am angry that we let companies do this 

We are letting this happen.

If we would pay more attention, we'd see right through it

The only reason this playbook works is because we believe we can't do anything about it AND because these industries assume we don't care

But guess what: we can and we do!

So, what happened?

A quarter-century old glyphosate study has just been retracted for scientific fraud. ⚠️
Here are the facts everyone should know:

• A leading toxicology journal has officially retracted a 2000 study that claimed glyphosate was safe.

• The retraction cites “critical issues” that undermine the academic integrity of the article.

• Court-released Monsanto Papers revealed that Monsanto employees wrote the study.

• External scientists had signed their names to a paper they did not write.

• This practice is known as ghostwriting and is considered scientific fraud.

• Companies use it to make industry-friendly research appear independent.

• The retraction comes twenty-five years after publication and long after glyphosate became a global controversy.

So 25 years, they misled the public and possibly gave cancer to millions of adults and children

• Thousands of internal documents uncovered in US court cases exposed the disconnect between internal knowledge and public claims.

• The case raises urgent questions about the credibility of industry-funded research.

• The scandal continues to shape global discussions on pesticide safety and public trust in science.

Drie Belgische ondernemers hebben het initiatief Ten Lives gelanceerd, 

Een project dat via muziekfestivals de strijd wil aangaan tegen de verwoestijning in Europa. 

Voor een eerste proefeditie in Portugal is een crowdfundingcampagne gestart.

Het concept combineert natuurherstel met cultuur. Deelnemers werken ’s ochtends aan eenvoudige ingrepen zoals het graven van kuilen en het plaatsen van stenen om regenwater beter in de bodem te laten infiltreren. 

Volgens de initiatiefnemers kan zo de vicieuze cirkel van erosie worden doorbroken en de grond opnieuw vruchtbaar worden. Met 1.500 deelnemers in één week zou tot 100 hectare kunnen worden hersteld.

Zuid-Europa kreunt onder hitte, ontbossing en overmatig watergebruik
Verwoestijning — landdegradatie door erosie, droogte, verlies van bodemvruchtbaarheid, woestijnvorming — was ooit eerder vooral een probleem in droge gebieden. 

Maar klimaatverandering, intensieve landbouw, ontbossing en overmatig watergebruik maken dat ook in Europese regio’s aanzienlijke delen van land kwetsbaar zijn.

In Europa gaat het zelden om echte “woestijnen” zoals in Afrika of het Midden-Oosten, maar om proces van landdegradatie: bodemverarming, verlaagde waterbeschikbaarheid, woestijnachtig klimaat in streken die vroeger vruchtbaar waren.

Niet onlogisch dat Spanje, Portugal, Italië en Griekenland er het meest last van hebben. Spanje — met name in het zuiden en zuidoosten (Andalusië, Murcia) zijn droogte, bodemerosie en waterschaarste structureel.
Italië — in het zuiden en delen van Centraal-Italië, waar hitte en onregelmatige neerslag landbouw en grondwater onder druk zetten.

Griekenland — vooral op de eilanden en in het binnenland: droogte gecombineerd met overbegrazing en toerisme belast het ecosysteem.
Portugal — het zuiden (Algarve) en binnengebieden lijden onder hitte, droogte en verdroging van landbouwgrond.

In de namiddag en avond krijgen de festivalgangers een cultureel programma met workshops, lezingen en concerten. Het team van drie oprichters en dertig vrijwilligers wil van 30 april tot 3 mei in Pinhel een kleinschalige eerste editie organiseren. 

De Europese context maakt het project urgent: naar schatting 23 procent van het EU-grondgebied is al matig getroffen door verwoestijning, en 8 procent loopt een hoog risico.
