I used to think being overlooked meant I wasn’t good enough.

So I stayed quiet.
I overdelivered.
I worked twice as hard for half the recognition.
And every month I told myself next month will feel different.

It never did.

The shift came when I stopped blaming myself
and asked a harder question.

Sometimes the hardest seasons of your career

I told myself I was being strategic.

What I was really doing was managing around a conflict I didn’t trust myself to handle yet.

I remember a recurring meeting where a senior stakeholder kept reopening decisions we’d already aligned on.
Every time it happened, I’d clarify gently.
Reframe the context.
Send a longer follow-up deck afterward.

I told myself I was maintaining alignment.
What I was actually doing was avoiding saying: “This decision is closed, and here’s how we move forward to drive x% results.”

So I adjusted.
I softened the ask.
I added context no one requested.
I kept the peace and called it leadership.

And for a while, it worked.
Until my career stopped moving.
