My first #Networking event of the year, and where better to start than with the Small Firms Association.

They hosted a fantastic networking session and panel discussion focused on #StrategicMarketing – which is obviously right up my alley!

It was great to hear fellow marketer Jane Manzor make some incredibly salient points about how to stop wasting budget and start deploying it strategically.

Then, David Broderick led a lively panel discussion with Jane, Gary Grimes (Simplí Finance ( Ireland )) and Shane Reilly (Moyee Coffee) digging into the reality of business challenges and the various #growth strategies each business owner strives to adopt.

The decorations are barely down and already I see businesses rushing to launch fresh campaigns and fill their inboxes with bold plans for 2026.

But here is the hard truth:

💡 Almost nobody makes good strategic decisions in the first week of January!

If 2025 taught us anything, it’s that "busy" does not equal "profitable." I’ve spoken to many business owners who complained that their teams spent last year spinning their wheels on tasks that looked like work but didn't drive any revenue.

So, before you add to your to-do list, try this:

Subtract from it!

Here is the January Subtraction Strategy I’m using with my clients this week:

1️⃣ Audit the Noise: Look at your 2025 marketing activities. Which 20% drove 80% of your results?
2️⃣ Drop Legacy Habits: If a newsletter, social platform, or Networking group didn't generate ROI in 2025, don't drag it into 2026. Pause it.
3️⃣Prioritise Output Over Availability: Block out 2 hours of "Deep Work" every morning this month. No calls. No emails.

You don’t need another year filled with noise. You need a year filled with intentional progress.

The "January Drift"

If you are still relying solely on "Last-Click" attribution in 2026, your marketing reports are lying to you.

(For anyone unfamiliar, attribution is how you track which marketing touchpoints contribute to a final sale).

Here is the issue with traditional models:

If you only look at the first click (discovery) or the last click (conversion), you are only measuring the "bookends" of the buyer journey.

You are missing the entire story in the middle.

Today’s B2B and B2C buyers browse anonymously. They research across social channels, compare options quietly, and often don't make contact until their decision is 80% made.

If you only attribute success to that final "Book a Call" form fill or “Add to Cart”, you will inevitably cut budget from the channels that actually nurtured them to that point.

Moving to a multi-touch attribution approach isn't just about better data; it's about protecting your budget. It gives you:

✔ Clearer insight into the "messy middle."
✔ Smarter decisions on resource allocation.
✔ Better ROI across the entire funnel.

My Expert Tip: Don't try to fix everything overnight. Start small. 
Go into your analytics (like GA4) this week and look your “attribution model” report (found under Advertising). 
What channels are showing up? There could lie your hidden value.

Your clients don't want to buy your "innovative, AI-driven, cloud-based platform."

They want to buy the 4 hours a week it saves their team on manual tasks.

If your B2B marketing feels "flat," it’s usually because you have fallen into the "Technical Trap."

You spend all your time talking about specs, capabilities, and tools because you are proud of what you built. But features don’t inspire action.

Buyers are selfish – they only care about outcomes for them.

Here is the shift you need to make in your Q1 messaging:

❌ The Feature (What you say now): "Our software has 99.9% uptime with integrated API capabilities and advanced reporting dashboards." (Buyer thinks: So what?)

✅ The Outcome (What they need to hear): "We eliminate the risk of downtime during your peak season and give your CFO the exact data they need for board meetings instantly." (Buyer thinks: I need that!)

Stop selling the drill. Start selling the hole in the wall…as marketing guru Theodore Levitt said way back in the ‘60s!

In fact, don't just sell the hole. Sell the shelf. Sell the organised office. Sell the feeling of control that comes after the work is done!

If your message doesn’t speak directly to efficiency, risk reduction, or increased profits, they’ll scroll past.
