beehiiv made a splash this week with its Winter Release 2025 event, unveiling more than 10 new features. 

These include native podcast functionality, a link-in-bio tool, digital products, an AI website builder, web analytics, automations, paid subscriptions, dynamic content, and much more.

Beehiiv has historically been bucketed in competition with Substack, Kit, and other legacy email service providers like Mailchimp.

With the launch of these new tools, beehiiv is now competing with a much larger group of platforms and tools, including:

✂️ Instagram's video editing app, Edits, is seeing notable growth, with weekly creator usage nearly doubling in Q3 and monthly actives up 40%.

🧠 OpenAI is piloting group chats in ChatGPT, similar to Microsoft Copilot Groups, creating a shared AI space for planning, brainstorming, and collaboration.

🌏 South Korea is considering restricting entry for foreign creators posting hateful or derogatory content online.

When you hear “side hustle,” your first thought is probably making more money. And yes, that is often the top motivator for why people pick up side hustles. 💰 

Yet today, side hustles are going well beyond additional income, according to new data from Canva.

People are investing in them for creative expression, personal growth, and to turn their passions into businesses.

Plus, money isn’t the only outcome they’re getting from side hustles:

-33% gained new clients or customers
- 29% built their professional reputation or personal brand
- 28% expanded their professional network
- 17% led to consulting or freelance gigs
- 15% went full-time as creators
- 14% said their side hustle helped them get a promotion

Up until about 17 months ago, when I decided to venture out on my own, I had a side hustle of some sort since 2011: hip hop blog, freelance writing, Instagram content, personal blog, photography, newsletter, and more.

The primary reason for any of these was never money, although each did bring in income through ad revenue, brand partnerships, freelance work, licensing photos, blog link insertions, and more.

The only side hustle I ever did primarily for money was driving Uber for a couple of years, which came with plenty of funny stories.

While my side hustles eventually turned into a full-time business, I actually see the biggest impact coming from other areas. They helped me land my first social media job, meet new people and expand my network, learn beyond my day-to-day work, be a better influencer marketer, help close clients for the company I worked for, build a case for promotions, and much more.

With the workforce evolving, from companies becoming leaner and offering fewer growth opportunities to the rise of social media, AI, and other emerging technologies, side hustles are here to stay and will likely increase.

This shift will require both employees and employers to navigate this new reality.

It is easy to place the responsibility solely on employees and expect them to make sure their side hustles are not a distraction or appear to be, which is important. 

But employers also need to recognize that many of their top talent are likely to have side hustles and its likely for a number of reasons. The key is figuring out how to create space for employees to bring the skills, learnings, and insights from their “5 to 9s” into the “9 to 5s.”

YouTube checks the box for a lot of things, but one big gap it has had? Direct messaging. 

The platform actually had native messaging for a few years but shut down the feature in 2019 to focus on public interactions like comments.

Now it's bringing it back. YouTube announced it's experimenting with a new native messaging feature, which it says is one of its biggest requests.

Starting in Ireland and Poland for users over 18, the feature will allow users to send Shorts, long-form videos, and live streams directly to other users. Messaging starts with an invite link. Once accepted, users can share content and chat in a dedicated space.

When YouTube had DMs, messaging across social media was not what it is today. Now it's a central part of the experience, especially on platforms like Instagram, where messaging continues to grow and is a core feature. 

85% of content shared via DMs are Reels, and nearly 700,000 Reels are shared in DMs every minute.

This growth has influenced product updates across platforms. Instagram put DMs front and center. Threads added DMs and Group Chats. TikTok and LinkedIn have enhanced messaging. Even Spotify and Airbnb have added native messaging experiences.

The timing is much more favorable for YouTube today, but adoption is not guaranteed. YouTube's social ecosystem is not as friend-centric as Instagram's, which limits natural messaging activity. Think about how many friends you are connected with on Instagram compared to YouTube. It's not even close.

But creators could benefit from this move in meaningful ways. Direct messaging opens up opportunities for creators to reach out to their most engaged fans directly. It creates new discovery paths as fans share videos with friends. And it gives YouTube additional signals to improve recommendations, potentially boosting creator reach.

Building out messaging also gives YouTube a chance to align its short-form video experiences more closely with Instagram and TikTok. The platform could add a count for how many times a Shorts has been shared via messages, which could create network effects.

This push and pull between private and public is happening across platforms.

While YouTube is expanding private interactions, Snap Inc., built on private chats, is exploring the opposite approach: more public discussions. Its new Topic Chats feature, currently being tested in the US, Canada, and New Zealand, lets users join conversations across Stories, Spotlight, and Search, inspired by how communities interact in public comments on Spotlight videos.

Whether private spaces or public forums, users want places to engage around creators, communities, and cultural moments. Sometimes private, sometimes public, platforms need to support that fluidity.

After analyzing a dozen case studies from AIR Media-Tech, here’s what I’ve learned:

1️⃣ Start with CPM but don’t stop there

CPM is usually the first thing people look at. It matters but it is just one piece of the puzzle.

2️⃣ High CPM equals high competition

 English dominates YouTube with 1.45 billion viewers and 12 million plus creators competing for attention. Other languages often have far less competition, making smaller markets a real opportunity to stand out.

3️⃣ Low CPM doesn’t mean low income

Lower-CPM countries can have massive audiences. Take Indonesia for example, even at CPMs under $1, the scale can generate significant revenue.

🤔 So how do creators actually choose which languages to dub?

 It requires a multi-lens approach: look at a creator’s audience, regional CPMs, and content type to identify where videos might perform best.

Choosing Languages to Dub Your Videos (w/ AIR Media-Tech)

Here's what caught my attention across the creator economy this week:

💬 YouTube brings back messaging and is testing a way for users to share Shorts, long-form videos, and live streams with each other.

🛡️ Facebook launched a new tool to help creators safeguard their original Reels by sending notifications when their Reels may have been reused, allowing them to take action.

🎬 Instagram upgraded the Reels camera with 20-minute recording capability and a smoother editing experience for green screens and more.

🤖 TikTok now lets users choose how much AI-generated content appears on their For You Page.

⚖️ LinkedIn denies reports that gender or any other demographic information affects visibility, noting that hundreds of signals influence what appears in feeds.

📱 iHeartMedia brings a TikTok-like experience to its app with Highlights, a tab featuring short-form video clips from shows, stations, and podcasts across its network.

💵 US creator ad spend is projected to hit $37 billion this year, according to a report by the IAB. Much of this spend is going toward paid amplification rather than direct creator partnerships.

📝 The Italian Communications Regulatory Authority (AGCOM) now requires “relevant influencers” to register and follow a code of conduct similar to media companies.

🧾  The American Influencer Council (AIC) released a free tax guide for US-based creators in celebration of National Entrepreneurship Day. 

🤖 Agentio an AI-native platform for creator advertising, raised a $40 million Series B and plans to expand to beyond YouTube campaigns.
