Over my 20+ year legal career – 16 of them as a practicing lawyer – tech advances have changed how legal professionals work, but didn’t shake our core services. Now is different. We’re at the dawn of a new era. In January 2023 – the early days of ChatGPT – I began experimenting with Generative AI within my Fortune 200 commercial litigation and contract negotiation practice. Starting small, Gen AI took on discrete drafting and research tasks for me. But as I learned to responsibly harness its abilities, its role grew. And it consistently impressed. By August 2023, I had it performing sophisticated tasks – akin to work I'd done as a biglaw associate in Washington, DC and Pittsburgh – to help me and my outside counsel prepare for (and ultimately win) oral argument in federal court. This is the real deal, and we’re just starting to scratch the surface. Witnessing AI’s exciting and disruptive potential propelled me to follow a passion discovered through 5 1⁄2 years of in-house legal operations and tech experience. In October 2023, I founded Sea Change Legal Ops LLC, focusing on helping my fellow legal professionals realize the benefits of Generative AI – not only for our clients and organizations, but also for ourselves. In May 2024, I became a Product Manager for an AI-focused legal tech company, BriefCatch, which empowers legal professionals to improve their legal writing.
