There’s a lot of debate right now about whether AI is going to “replace thinking.”

As someone who spent most of her life studying math in some form, I find that framing incomplete.

Repetition changes brains.  
Exposure changes brains.  
Humans absorb their environment whether they intend to or not.

So even when AI is doing a large portion of the cognitive heavy lifting, people are still learning. Sometimes subtly, sometimes structurally. Pattern recognition doesn’t just turn off because a tool is involved.

But here’s the part I don’t see discussed enough:

That dynamic holds most strongly inside a bounded domain.

Historically, depth came from constraint. You stayed in one lane long enough for repetition to compound into expertise. That’s how specialists are built.

The tension between depth and breadth isn’t new. Entire fields — take data science — have wrestled with the specialist vs. generalist question for years without a clean answer.

AI doesn’t eliminate that trade-off.  
It changes the economics of it.

It lowers the barrier to operating across domains, including ones where you start with limited expertise. Breadth becomes more accessible than it has ever been.

Which raises a more interesting question than “Will AI replace thinking?”

Are we moving toward a world of intelligent generalists rather than narrowly defined specialists?

And if so, how does intuition actually develop?

Do you need deep expertise in at least one domain before you can recognize patterns across many?  

Or can cross-domain pattern recognition itself become a primary skill?

My instinct is that depth probably still anchors intuition but the path to getting there may be changing.

I don’t think we know yet.

But that feels like the conversation we should be having.
