Q1 2025: 0% Cursor. 100% Claude Code.  Switched my IDE from Cursor to VS Code with Claude Code

BOLD PREDICTION for Q2 2025: 80% Claude Code, 20% OpenAI Codex. Why? Cost-saving as more coding will be offloaded to autonomous AI agents.

I still think Cursor is a better choice for most newbie vibe coders or casual AI builders because of how easy it is to get it started. For everything else, Claude Code is just too good to go back to Cursor. Both tools will be popular for a long time though.

How software engineers' roles would evolve:

- 2024: 50% writing code manually, 50% sitting on a desk asking AI to write codes for you

And if you are running a technology company, you now need a different framework to assess software engineers. This is one of the ways for you to motivate software engineers, thereby further reducing the ever-ongoing conflict of "Why are we still so slow in development?" vs. "That's not how it works for our app"

The tale of two apps: Wix and Shopify

Wix, one of the most well-known no-code website builders, is down 63% on it stock price compared to one year ago. You assumed it right. With the rise of the AI tools, the core values Wix provides can now be replicated by Claude Code(s) much faster, simpler, and easier. So why do you need Wix anymore? You don't. And the stock price is the reflection of it.

Shopify is basically Wix for e-commerce. And its stock price has GONE UP by 23% compared to one year ago.

So why?

Wix built a utility while Shopify built an ecosystem. Anyone who has tried Shopify may tell you that she/he always ended up integrating third-party plugins partnered with Shopify, whether it be abandoned cart email reminders or a coupon/loyalty program or inventory tracking. Building an e-commerce site became just as easy but building it "right" has NOT become any easier at all when it involves buying and selling and everything in-between.

We live in a world where anyone can create a todo app, a weather app, and even a sophisticated SaaS app in a matter of hours, if not minutes. The competition is bloody hell here and it's not worth to throw yourself into it if you want to build a "business".

On the other hand, let's say you work on a domain where the little nuances, know-hows, and detail actually matter. And you are persistence enough to optimize them for a long time, which a vast majority of vibe coders don't have, you will realize that the competitions have not gotten any worse. It's a place where crafters, thought leaders, and creative engineers can still thrive a lot.

This will result in passionate users..... which will lead to an ecosystem/platform.

This is why I decided to build Klaim. Having worked in a subscription team in a big tech where my team alone generated $1B+ on subscriptions, little nuances and know-hows are the only thing and everything. These are the values you cannot replicate easily, even with the most powerful AI in the world. I don't care how smart you are. You just can't.

So if you are trying to build a business, what product are you building and why?

Visited just another Starbucks in a small town (population of ~110,000) in Korea. I thought Starbucks was a friendly, small, and cozy coffeeshop in the neighborhood.

As I'm automating much of my workflow and product dev using LLMs, I started seeing surprises on my AI bills. I'm sure many of you started seeing more of it.

I see a growing number of people "screwed" over the AI model pricings, especially with consumption of Claude APIs and Image/Video generation in general. So I put together data showing how much each LLM, image, video, and audio generation cost from different models.

AI 시대에 어울리는 회사문화: 영어이름과 반말로 대화하기

이번 한국출장에서 많은 회사들을 만나고 지난 2년간 한국에 팀이 있는 많은 회사들과 같이 일하고 대화하면서 나는 다음에 한국에 지사를 차려서 팀을 키우면 꼭 해야 하겠다고 다짐한 것이 있었다. 그것은 서로 영어이름으로 부르고 반말로 대화하는 것. 특히 AI 시대에는 더더욱 맞는 문화라고 생각한다. 일단 몇가지 이유를 들자면:

1. 모두 존대말을 하는 경우 (내가 관찰한 바로는) 아직까지 한국사회에서는 기본적으로 나이 많은 사람이 어린 사람에게 '배려'를 해준다는 생각. 그리고 어린 사람은 나이 든 사람에게 당연히 갖추어야 할 '예의'를 차린다고 생각하는 것이 있다. 이럴 경우 확실히 은연중에 상하관계가 형성이 된다. 그런데 지금 격동의 AI 시대에 계급장 다 때고 경쟁/토론해야 하는 상황에서 일단 어린 사람들이 몇점이라도 지고 들어가는 상황이 된다. 아무리 우리회사는 그런것 없다고 해도 소용없다. 그냥 문화/사회에 깊숙히 내제되어 있는 존대말 문화에서 개개인이 느끼는 작은 뉘앙스까지 바꿀수는 없다.

2. 존대말을 할 경우 회사내에서 활발한 토론으로 이어지기가 힘들다. 한국회사들과 일을 하면서 느낀 가장 큰 특징중의 하나가 많은 경우 직원들이 미팅때 별 말이 없다는 것이다. 특히 그 미팅때 나이가 좀 있으신 분들이 리더인 경우에 더 크게 나타나는 현상이다. 일단 존대말로 말을 시작하는 것 자체가 friction 이다. 'xx 님, 말씀하신 것도 일리는 있지만 저는 조금 다른 견해를 가지고 있습니다' vs. 'Jason, 나의 생각은 좀 달라'. 후자가 훨씬 더 직관적이고 간결하며 효율적이다.

3. 평소 일상생활에서 접하지 못했던 나이와 관계없는 반말문화를 회사에서 경험할때 새로운 경험이라는 그 자체에서 나오는 창의성과 아이디어가 있기 마련이다. 서로 반말하며 느끼는 평등감, 존중감, 그리고 나름의 '짜릿함' 이라는 경험은 새로운 아이디어로 발전될 가능성이 높고 이런 무형적 가치들은 때로는 그냥 믿고 가야할 때도 있다.

얼마전에 고등학생 인턴에게 '우리 그냥 이제부터 서로 영어이름 부르고 반말하죠' 라고 하니 오히려 그 분이 '아.... 그거는 제가 좀 생각해 볼께요. 제가 할수 있을지 모르겠어요' 라고 해서 좀 당혹스러웠다. 뭐, 며칠만 더 하면 익숙해 지겠지.

Going AI native Week 2:

Create a ticket and assign to AI. That's it.

After spending some of last week on fully automating AI-based workflow, this now has become a routine at Klaim

- a Linear ticket is created and marked as ai-todo-approved
- It automatically creates a Github issue
- Claude Code, integrated with Github, receives the event, writes codes and makes PR
- I (or any other engineers) review and merge it

Once you get a taste of it, you will never go back.
