Today is International Men’s Day
Most people won't even know it
It won't get much attention 🤔 

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱.

I got skin in the game, as a man.
But also as a father (and mentor) to my two boys.

The current state is pretty bad.

Suicide. Mental Health. Education Rates. Workplace Deaths. Homelessness. You name it, and the stats paint the real picture. 

But you don't need those numbers to know it. Most of us have felt it, and seen it in our fathers, brothers, sons, nephews, cousins.

Men also generally don't talk. 
Nor reach out for help.
I am guilty too.

Especially since leaving the military,
Losing that support network,
And not spending enough time around other men.

But last Saturday, I did exactly that
And spent the day with a bunch of awesome blokes.

A shout out to Hira Nathan (aka The Mindful Māori)

For organising Tūāpapa, an awesome wānanga for men focused on well-being principles. No titles. No posturing. Just real conversations, gratitude, a mean hāngī, and space to reset and ground yourself.

We are all in the same waka.
In fact, there is no other waka.

One of the best leadership tools in my toolbox, 
Cost less than $1.

I found it in a Dollar Store back in 2016.

I had just finished reading Extreme Ownership (by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin), and it was fresh in my mind when I spotted this wee mirror. Five for $2. It was a no brainer. I grabbed a pack. 

Back in my office, I stuck one on my screen so it stared straight back at me.

The team had a good laugh. I got plenty of stick and then there were the endless 'vanity' jokes! 😆 

But in truth, at the time, I was feeling a bit disenfranchised. Everything was someone else’s fault. The organisation, systems, my boss, senior leadership, the culture. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗠𝗘.

Extreme Ownership came at the right time. And that little mirror reminded me of it daily. 

I have kept the mirror almost ten years now!

Although, I don’t need it anymore. Nor the 'Accountability' and 'Ownership' labels on it. The mirror has become a mental habit.

One of the most powerful leadership tools you have is free. Just turn the mirror on yourself, and you might find the answers you are searching for.

Good communication isn’t a speaking skill.
It’s an 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 skill.

If you’re delivering a speech, 
Giving a TED talk, or presenting on stage, then yes.
Language, articulation, and delivery matter.

But most leaders don’t influence from a stage.
They influence in everyday conversations.

In one on one chats.
In small groups.
In the messy, human, interpersonal space.
Where communication often breaks down 

So, as leader we are better off when we:

Listen with the intent to understand.
Speak with the intent to be understood.
(Not with the intent to impress).

Do that consistently 
And you won’t just communicate better,
But you’ll deepen their trust.

Leaders don't make decisions by consensus.
Period.

Yet the lure of consensus seeking
still plays out in decision-making.

- Sometimes it's a desire to please everyone
- Other times a fear of being seen as authoritative
- Sometimes fear of blame and consequences
- Or sometimes it's a desire to be liked

Whatever the reason,
you risk having too many cooks in the kitchen

And ultimately,
it starts to impact 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲.

Instead, look to:
- Seek input to broaden the options.
- Encourage critical thinking to challenge solutions.
- Understand others emotions to help empathise.
- Take a balcony view to maintain perspective.
- Set the vision to align conversations.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆, 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, and the accountability of that outcomes that accompany that decision.

Pleasing people at the cost of the outcome
That's not leadership.
Nor will it work in the long run.

The 'noble martyr' story feels good as a leader.
Until you realise 
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 😐 

After all, it’s a job.
You will move on.
Your team will move on.
Your boss will move on.
The company will replace you all.

The late nights, the sacrifices, the burnout
will fade and be forgotten.

Your loyal team will sing praises of the new leader.
Everyone will find their new norm.
And business will continue fine without you.

This isn’t a call to stop caring in the now.
𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲.

Protect your health.
Set your boundaries.
Keep developing yourself.
Keep building for a life beyond your role.

⚠️Fellow coaches, watch out for stuff like this⚠️

I don’t often post this, but this was annoying professionally and personally.

𝗧𝗟𝗗𝗥: A social media company is impersonating International Coaching Federation (Australasia) pretending to be a 'partner' to scam coaches new to the coaching business.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆:
I sit on the Board of ICF Australia as Director of Partnerships. If there was a partnership, I think I would know. There isn’t one.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆:
There are far too many people constantly targeting vulnerable coaches and consultants. Most coaches get into this work for the right reasons and don’t always have a background in business or social media. That makes us easy targets for the charlatans promising to “build your brand”, “10X your leads”, “launch your course”, or help you have “10k months”.

People who claim to know how to grow a coaching business, but haven’t actually done it in any meaningful or sustained way. Like it or not, coaches (like you and I) are a cash cow for these players.

I know, because I’ve fallen for these offers myself. 

Sure, on a good day, you see through this. But when your bank balance is negative, you’re calling banks and 2nd tier lenders to cover overheads and pay your team, when your confidence is low, when you’re looking for a lifeline... a pitch can feel like a silver bullet. That’s exactly when these things land.

So if you’re a coach or new to business, be careful. If something feels off, feel free to send it to me, even if we don't know each other. I’m happy to give you my two cents, for what they are worth.

I’ve been there, and I’d hate to see others make the same mistakes I did 🙂

This month's guest was an absolute treat!
I always love this part of what we do 💛

Once a month, we come together as The Bridge coaching team, to learn and grow.

And for this month's session, we welcomed Kerry Makin-Byrd, PhD: author, psychologist and good friend of Yumi, one of our coaches.

We talked about manifestation from a science perspective.

Her core idea was simple: we are manifesting all the time, not in a mystical way, but in a neurological way.

Our brains are constantly selecting tiny pieces of the world to focus on, building stories from them, and then acting on those stories. Most of the time it happens on autopilot. The challenge is to pause long enough to notice it!

Given I often run at 100miles an hour 😅 
And given my own talks I do on rewriting stories, 
This really landed with me! 

It was a timely reminder, as we enter this overwhelmingly busy time of the year.

The moment you care more about being right than getting it right, you stop leading.

Yet it happens all the time.
Leaders arguing and disagreeing in circles 🙄

Not to find the best answer.
Not to test ideas.
Not to move the business forward.
𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸.

Often that position was based on information that is no longer relevant or up to date. That is ego overplaying.

Effective leadership requires you not to cling to an old view just because it once felt right. You need to stay curious, stay open, and let new data, insight, and perspectives shift your thinking.

Changing your mind shows confidence. It is a sign of emotional and cognitive intelligence.

Sure, no one wants to follow a flip flopper. But no one trusts a stubborn ox either, someone who cares more about being right than getting it right.

So next time, as others or even you start digging in, ask yourself:

Are you defending the idea or defending your ego?

Changing your mind is a strength, not a weakness.

“I have to be honest Kenny. I’ve been saying all the right things that I thought I should say in these conversations, so I need to come clean.”

That was 2 years ago, and it changed everything!

Meet Daniel Wei. 
One of the youngest Managers at Barfoot & Thompson. A future leader who will help shape the business over the next two decades; and one of the most thoughtful and reflective leaders I have worked with. 

But the start was a bit rocky as we were figuring out how we work together 😬

He joined the Leadership Executive Coaching Program back in Sep 2023 and, like many leaders, slipped into impression management. 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀.

The difference was that Daniel noticed it himself and owned it. Not something we always see in all leaders. Typically, it's us coaches helping leaders realise they are doing it. 

That showed honesty and courage, and more importantly, self awareness and ownership of his own growth as a leader.  

Once that barrier dropped, our conversations became far more meaningful. They still are, after working together for over 2 years.

Except, we now meet at some sweet spots like this flash golf club in Beachlands! 😎 

Daniel has come leaps and bounds from the thoughtful but reserved leader I first met; to now becoming the thought and voice of influence at the highest Boardroom table.

As a leader in my mid 20s, I remember standing outside the big room, about to take my first project to the board 🫣

I was new to it, and a bit nervous,
Big money, big stakeholders, high expectations.

It did feel like walking into the lion’s den,
And an arena to be judged as a leader.

But then along came Andrew,
A guy slightly senior to me
Who had been in the role for a while.

“You’ve got this, mate.”
He shook my hand, big smile on his face.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱.

No, Andrew wasn’t going to bat for me
He defiantly wasn’t going to speak for me
Nor would he rescue me if it all started to fall apart.

But every time I glanced across the room,
I could see him nodding,
“You’re good. Keep going.”

Not all meetings need to be safe or comfortable.
And that’s ok, that’s business.

And sure, we could talk about collaboration,
Psychological safety, or communication skills, etc. 

But we sometimes underestimate the value of knowing: Who’s got my back?

Because the hard part isn’t walking into the arena.

If you could learn leadership in 30sec TikTok videos
Then everyone would be great leaders!

But they’re not.
Nor is leadership a topic,
That can be mastered through sound bites.

Yet, the space is saturated with it. 
There are so many clichés, platitudes, or quick-fixes, 
That we sometimes forget the reality.

Forget the nuance and cultural context matter in leadership, if you are interested in getting actual results. 

Forget the tensions that come with leading people and driving outcomes in environments shaped by changing market and economic forces.

Forget that people are irrational, each wired differently, and motivated by far more than logic.

That’s exactly what we spent two hours exploring with Simon Whyte and the CEOs, Directors, and Senior Leaders at Weave Leadership. All leaders who know the real world challenges of leading and building a business.
