Google just introduced “Nested Learning,” a new way to train AI that directly attacks catastrophic forgetting. 

What’s new

1️⃣ Instead of one big model updated all at once, Nested Learning treats the system as many linked learners running at different speeds, similar to how the brain has fast short‑term and slow long‑term memory. 

2️⃣ Google’s proof‑of‑concept model, Hope, is a self‑modifying recurrent architecture with “continuum memory systems” that update at different frequencies. 

3️⃣ Hope beats strong recurrent and transformer‑style models on language tasks and long‑context tests like needle‑in‑a‑haystack, while hanging on to past knowledge instead of forgetting it. 

If this scales, it moves LLMs closer to humans: models that can keep learning from experience without wiping what they already know.
