My best mate just surprised me in Cape Town.

Two days before Matt booked his flight, I told him I was feeling lonely for the first time since being here.

I didn't make a big deal of it. Just one of those honest chats you have with someone you trust.

Two days later he was at my door.

Four days in Cape Town. We worked together in the mornings, I introduced him to the business friends I've made out here, we went on a hike with a founders group, went kayaking.

It was exactly what I needed.

And it reminded me of something I genuinely believe.

You can build the most systemised, location-independent business in the world. 

You can work from anywhere. You can have every freedom you've designed for yourself.

But none of it means much without the right people around you.

I might be 6,000 miles from home.

But I'm not alone.

That's not luck. That's what happens when you invest in genuine relationships before you need them. 

Matt didn't show up because I'm "successful". He showed up because we've built something real.

I forgot I was fun.

Genuinely. 

Somewhere between building three businesses and becoming "the systems guy", I lost track of the bloke who was always the first one to suggest something stupid and the last one to leave.

8 weeks in Cape Town and the first thing I did was build my work routine.

Classic.

But last week I finally gave myself permission to just... go. 

Cape of Good Hope. Cape Point. Penguins at Boulders Beach. Baboons on the roadside. Sea lions. Ostriches. A sunset cruise. Quadbiking. Kayaking. 

Even...A techno club (still not my vibe, but I went).

Small things. Materialistic even. But they reminded me of something important.

I'm actually a fun person.

I know that sounds mad to say out loud. 

People who know me would probably laugh reading this - I'm apparently the comedian of most groups. But when you're deep in the pressure cooker of everything you've built, fun is the first thing to go quiet.

And I want to be honest - this trip wasn't all scenic drives. Stomach bug for four weeks. Mosquito bites like hives. Real loneliness. A situation back home that knocked me for a week. 

What a way to start your 30s.

But here's what I learnt.

The steam had to release before the calm could come. And once it did, I didn't just feel clearer about business.

I remembered I actually like myself.

When did you last do something just because it was fun?

I'm writing this from Cape Town.

But this post isn't really about Cape Town.

It's about a conversation I had with a client last week who told me his version of freedom is being home every single day when their kid finish school.

Not travelling the world.
Not working from a beach.

Just. Being. Present.

That hit me.

Because that's exactly why I do what I do.

Freedom isn't a location. It's not a laptop on a sunbed or a passport full of stamps.

→ For some founders it's school pick-up every day
→ For others it's building something that outlasts them
→ For some it's simply a weekend that actually feels like a weekend
The systems I build with clients aren't about creating my lifestyle.

They're about creating yours.

Whatever that looks like.

I pride myself on being a man of my word.

Yet, I haven't been.

In business, I am. "Politely Blunt" as I like to say.

→ If I say I'll deliver by Friday, it's done by Thursday with extra bits we didn't know it needed.
→ If I promise a result, I make it happen or explain why I couldn't

My professional credibility is built on this.
My networking credibility is built on this.

But I recently realised too late that in my personal life, I wasn't.

Made promises to friends I didn't keep.
Planned catch-ups that I cancelled.
Committed to things I let slip because "I got busy."

All in all... I wasn't a good friend and I wish I had a valid reason for it.

It's cost me. Friends. Credibility. Relationships that mattered.

Some of those circumstances? Probably too late to fix now.

Already made a promise to fix a situation and... I didn't.

That one stung.

Here's the uncomfortable truth:
I was excellent at keeping my word where it earned me money.
Terrible at keeping it where it actually mattered for my life.

Showed up fully for clients.
Showed up half-arsed for the people who actually cared about me.

That's not the version of myself I want to be.

I guess I'm writing this to say it out loud. I'm not sure why I'm wanting to admit this, but I'm known for being open and honest. Yet I hid my head in the sand for months.

So here's my public promise to myself and you:
→ Treat personal commitments with the same weight as professional ones
→ If I can't follow through, say no upfront instead of letting people down later
→ Show up for the people in my life with the same reliability I show clients
→ Stop using "I got busy" as an excuse for being a shit friend

I've recognised where I dropped the ball. I've apologised where I can. I'm fixing what's fixable.

But more importantly, I'm committing to being different going forward.

Being a "man of my word" means nothing if you're only keeping your word in certain places and not all places.

The people in your personal life deserve the same reliability you give your clients.

I'm holding myself to that standard now. Publicly. So there's accountability.

NOW let me say this if you maybe feel like this and feel stuck in a hole or are hiding your head in the sand...

If you've seriously dropped the ball somewhere, own it. Then commit to being better.

That's all any of us can do.

I will be better. I will do better.

Seven weeks in. Three businesses running. One big question answered.

Did I actually build businesses — or did I build a sophisticated job I just happen to do from nicer locations?

Here's what the numbers look like:

Capacity management.

The thing nobody talks about until they're drowning in work they can't deliver.

Here's what I mean:
You land 3 new clients in one week. Brilliant, right?
Except your team is already at 90% capacity. You've just overcommitted by 60 hours of work that doesn't exist.

Now you're scrambling. Quality drops. Deadlines slip. Team burns out.

That's not a sales problem. That's a capacity management problem.

Capacity management is understanding:
→ How much work your team can actually handle
→ How long things genuinely take (not how long you hope they take)
→ When you're approaching maximum capacity
→ When to say no to new work
→ When to hire versus when to systematise

Most founders have zero visibility on this.

They guess. They hope. They wing it.

Then wonder why everything feels chaotic.

Here's what I track:
→ Total team hours available per week
→ Current client commitments (actual time, not estimated)
→ Buffer for unexpected issues (minimum 20%)
→ Available capacity for new work

When available capacity drops below 15%, I stop taking new clients until something delivers or we hire.

Simple rule. Saves chaos.

Why this matters:
I had a client running at 140% capacity for 3 months straight. 
Every project was late. 
Team was exhausted. 
Clients were unhappy.

We mapped actual capacity versus commitments. They were overcommitted by 30 hours weekly.

Had to pause sales for 6 weeks whilst we delivered existing work properly.

Revenue dip hurt. But client satisfaction recovered. 
Team stopped burning out. Quality improved.
Now they track capacity weekly. 

Only take new work when there's actual space for it.

The uncomfortable truth:
Most founders don't have a growth problem. They have a capacity management problem.

You can sell all day long. Doesn't matter if you can't deliver properly.

Better to turn down work than take it and deliver it poorly.

Track your capacity. Know your limits. Protect your quality.

That's how you scale without breaking.

Someone asked me last week: "What even is process mapping?"

Fair question. I use the term constantly but rarely explain it properly.

Here's the simple version:
Process mapping is drawing out how something actually works in your business.

Not how you think it works. How it actually works. Step by step.

Example: Client Onboarding
Most founders think their onboarding goes:

→Client pays
→→We send welcome email
→→→We start work

But when you actually map it, it looks like:

→ Client pays
→ Finance manually enters into spreadsheet
→ Operations gets notified (sometimes)
→ Someone remembers to send welcome email (2-3 days later)
→ Client sends information via email
→ Information sits in inbox for a day
→ Someone manually copies it into 3 different systems
→ Information is incomplete, so we email again
→ Wait for response (3-5 days)
→ Finally enter everything properly
→ Now we can actually start work (12-18 days later)

See the difference?

Why this matters:
You can't fix what you can't see clearly.
→ You think onboarding takes 5 days (it actually takes 18)
→ You think the problem is team speed (it's actually the process)
→ You think you need more people (you need better systems)

Process mapping makes the invisible visible.

How we do it:
Sit down with you for 2 hours. Walk through exactly how something works today. 

Every step. Every handoff. Every decision point.

Then we spot:
→ Unnecessary steps that waste time
→ Bottlenecks causing delays
→ Dependencies on the founder that shouldn't exist
→ Information that gets lost in handoffs

Then we fix it.

The result:
Client I worked with last month thought their service delivery was "pretty efficient."

We mapped it. Found 8 unnecessary steps and 2 founder-dependency bottlenecks.

Eliminated the waste. Removed the dependencies. Same service, 40% faster delivery.

Process mapping isn't complicated. It's just honest documentation of reality.

Most businesses run on assumptions about how things work. We replace assumptions with facts.

Then we can actually solve the right problems.

Most people think I'm good at networking because I talk to everyone.

That's not it.

I'm good at networking because I remember what people tell me.

Here's the difference:

Bad networking:
→ Collecting business cards
→ "What do you do?"
→ Immediate pitch mode
→ Forgetting the person's name 5 minutes later
→ Never following up unless you need something

Simply "Transactional Sharks"

Good networking:
→ Genuine conversations about what people are building
→ Remembering details they share
→ Following up because you're actually interested
→ Connecting people who should know each other
→ Offering value before asking for anything

I met someone in Cape Town two weeks ago. They mentioned struggling with team delegation.

Sent them a process mapping framework yesterday. No pitch. No "let's work together." Just helpful.

That's networking.

It's things like this that made me make the Black Book Framework.

The Black Book Framework isn't complicated:
→ Be genuinely curious about people
→ Remember what matters to them
→ Follow through on what you say you'll do
→ Help when you can help
→ Build relationships before needing them

I've built three businesses entirely through relationships. Zero cold marketing. No ads. Just genuine connections with people over 7+ years.

Not because I'm "naturally charming" - although, that is what my mum says.

But because I treat people like humans, not leads.

The best networkers aren't the ones working the room. They're the ones people remember months later because they actually gave a shit about the conversation.

You don't need more connections. You need better relationships with the connections you have.
