This week, I’m weirdly grateful for Google Docs. The new features have been so good that they’ve genuinely sped up how I write and proofread. 

(One of these had my colleagues at Triple Whale shocked that Docs could even do it.)

Here are the three upgrades I’m using nonstop:

1) Proofread with Audio (“Listen to this tab”)

Writers know you can’t catch everything just by re-reading your own work. Your brain gets tired, starts auto-correcting, and skips right over the mistakes.

Now, once a doc hits final revision, I’ll close my eyes and listen to the text read aloud. Awkward phrasing, missing words, weird rhythm… all jump out.

Before, I had a whole survival kit for tired-brain proofreading: printing pages to read line-by-line, changing font colors, reading out loud to myself, etc. This feature replaces all of that.

2) Building Blocks (Email Drafts)

Go to Insert → Building blocks → Email draft.

I write my email copy inside the block, and with one click I can preview how it’ll look in an actual email. Seeing the real spacing makes it way easier to check flow and white space—usually I end up shortening sentences and adding more line breaks for readability.

3) Document Tabs

Track Changes / Version History has always been great for finding lost edits or seeing who changed what. But now, with document tabs, I can build a clean, scrollable “story” of revisions inside the same doc. No digging through the rubble of old versions.

It’s also a win for clients and collaborators: instead of hunting through multiple Docs to compare drafts, they can follow the evolution of the copy in one place.
