Here’s why the Shahe Aqueduct is considered the world's largest:

🔸 Unmatched Scale – It spans an incredible 9,050 metres, making it the longest aqueduct in the world. It was built to navigate a sudden drop in terrain and cross seven rivers and streams, including the Sha, Dalang, and Jiangxiang rivers.

🏗️ Mind-Blowing Construction – The aqueduct uses U-shaped troughs, each weighing a colossal 1,200 tonnes. Transporting and lifting these gigantic, 9.4-metre-high sections required custom-designed machinery, including a crane as tall as a 13-storey building!

💧 Precision Engineering – To ensure a seamless flow of water to the dry north, the entire South-to-North project has a gradient of less than 100 metres over 1,277 kilometres. The Shahe Aqueduct's section has a slope of just 1/26,000. That’s precision on a massive scale.

J'ai récemment travaillé sur un projet de reprise en sous-œuvre fascinant, et je voulais partager avec vous cette technique essentielle en génie civil.

🤔 Quand utiliser le chemisage ? – Imaginez un bâtiment dont l'usage change. Un ancien entrepôt transformé en bureaux ou en data center, par exemple. Les charges d'exploitation augmentent considérablement, et les poteaux d'origine ne sont plus suffisants pour garantir la sécurité et la stabilité de la structure. C'est là que le chemisage entre en jeu !

👉 Le processus de chemisage, étape par étape :

1\. Scellement des nouvelles armatures ↳ La première étape consiste à percer le poteau existant pour y sceller chimiquement de nouvelles barres d'armature. Ces barres assureront la liaison mécanique entre l'ancien et le nouveau béton.

2\. Coffrage ↳ Ensuite, on installe un coffrage autour du poteau d'origine. Cet espace va accueillir le nouveau béton et former la "chemise" de renforcement.

3\. Ajout d'armatures complémentaires ↳ On place des cadres et des barres longitudinales supplémentaires dans le coffrage, comme si on construisait un nouveau poteau autour de l'ancien. C'est littéralement un "poteau dans un poteau" !

4\. Coulage du béton ↳ Enfin, on coule un béton à haute performance (souvent sans retrait) dans le coffrage. Une fois durci, ce nouveau béton travaille en tandem avec la structure existante pour reprendre les charges supplémentaires.

✅ Les avantages de cette technique :
🔸 Augmentation significative de la portance : Le poteau renforcé peut supporter des charges beaucoup plus élevées.
🔸 Amélioration de la ductilité et de la résistance sismique : Le chemisage peut aussi être une solution de renforcement parasismique.
🔸 Durabilité accrue : La nouvelle couche de béton protège l'ancien poteau contre les agressions extérieures.

Recently, I've been exploring stair drawing in perspective, using just a pen. It’s a fantastic exercise that sharpens your understanding of space, form, and the fundamental principles of perspective that are so crucial in civil engineering and architecture.

Why is this simple act of drawing stairs so powerful?

It reinforces your understanding of vanishing points, horizon lines, and spatial depth. These aren't just artistic concepts; they are the very tools we use to visualize and communicate complex three-dimensional structures before they are built.

It hones your precision. With a pen, there's no erasing. Every line counts. This forces a level of focus and intentionality that mirrors the precision required in structural design and construction. One wrong calculation, one misplaced line, can have significant consequences.

It connects us to the history of our craft. Before BIM and advanced software, master builders and architects relied on hand-drawing to bring their incredible visions to life. Revisiting this skill is a way to honor that legacy and appreciate the fundamentals.

🔸 Pourquoi l’ingénieur structure dort-il parfois mal la nuit ?  

Imaginez un instant… Vous avez passé des semaines, voire des mois, à concevoir et calculer méticuleusement cette structure complexe et haute — un véritable chef-d’œuvre d’ingénierie. Chaque poutre, chaque pilier, chaque effort a été analysé, révisé et validé pour garantir la sécurité et la durabilité du bâtiment.  

👉 Pourtant, à l’autre bout du projet, ce bâtiment est livré et occupé par des personnes qui n’ont souvent qu’une connaissance limitée, voire nulle, des contraintes structurelles qui soutiennent leur environnement.
