I read Edward Amoroso’s book, Reaching the Chasm, in a single sitting. It was that good. It’s the handbook for every early-stage founder or someone thinking about making the plunge. 

That’s why I was excited to support Ed’s book launch this week, where he shared more insights live in front of a packed room. 

My favorite takeaway: Larger established companies are flying their plane at 30K feet. They have momentum, and getting from 30K to 40K takes effort, but it's certainly easier than the initial lift off from the ground. For start-ups finding product-market fit, it's the first 6 feet. And it can be brutal.

It can feel like a game of Mario Kart, where even when you’re winning, that blue shell or lightning strike is lurking around the next turn.

The core security issue with LLMs is that they can’t separate data from instructions. Every piece of data ingested into the content pipeline is at risk of becoming a task that the agent executes.

This is a mindset shift away from how we’ve traditionally thought about security.

Phishing emails may bypass email filters, but that beautiful little human at the end has a shot to spot something suspicious and not click on a link. It's why we've overinvested (spicy take, I know) in security awareness training.

All of that goes away with agents.

LLMs are data hungry and execution happy. They’ll happily follow along with any data that can be interpreted as instructions. They have no shame.

We need to elevate our understanding of the risks that agentic systems pose. We’re not dealing with the rules of old.

It’s never a good day when your coding agent says, “I'm presently tackling a very pointed question: Did I ever get permission to wipe the D drive? This requires immediate attention, as it's a critical issue.”

This is from a Reddit vibecoder who was playing around with Google’s new Antigravity Agentic IDE. It’s the latest in a line of coding agents that can level up your coding experience.

Unfortunately for this user, they configured Antigravity to operate in turbo mode, or more eloquently referred to as YOLO mode.

It’s YOLO mode because it allows the coding agent to execute commands on your system, in this case, the command to delete the user’s D drive. It’s great for productivity because you don’t have to babysit the IDE and can focus on other tasks, like restoring your deleted files.

This is just the latest example of the new trade-off between autonomy and reliability. It’s a new spin on security vs. convenience.

There are two key issues here:

1. Agents make mistakes. Without proper oversight, agents can make catastrophic missteps, with the only recourse being an apology.

2. User configuration is the weakest link. This is the same song in security. How you configure systems dictates how secure they are. When risky configurations exist, bad things happen.

We don’t need to wait for a massive incident to prioritize security. With ransomware, it was Colonial Pipeline. What is it going to be for AI agents?

I’m not convinced we can least privilege our way to secure AI.

Let’s put aside that we failed to do this well for users. Not because we didn’t try. But it’s an incredibly difficult problem to solve.

The crux of the issue is that whether it’s a user, non-human identity, or an agent, some account is going to need access to sensitive data or privileged tools. Otherwise, things would just break.

Attackers have long honed their experience in finding privileged accounts and using them to accomplish their goals.

Least privilege + continuous monitoring and enforcement is a better together story.

Just as attackers have figured out how to target domain admins, agents will find the path of least resistance to accomplish their goal. And these agents won’t worry about bypassing obvious security best practices, because there is no such thing as “obvious” to an agent.

We absolutely must strive to improve our enforcement of least privilege. But what takes that from good to great is when you monitor those choke points for suspicious activity.

Just as in non-agentic systems, focus on security controls and monitoring in tandem. It shouldn’t be an either-or.

Emily Dickinson would have made the perfect LLM-era hacker.

New research found that poetic structure, which contains condensed metaphors, stylized rhythm, and unconventional narrative framing, can bypass the pattern-matching heuristics on which guardrails rely.

How successful? In a test that covered 25 frontier models, human-generated poems achieved a 62% success rate. For LLM-created poems, 43%. Good job, humans, you still got it!

This is the perfect example that shows how defending LLM systems is a semantic problem. It’s not just a list of indicators (file names, file hashes, IP addresses, domains, etc.) that security has leaned on for so long. Security had to evolve from signature detection to heuristic detections, which focus on identifying malicious behavior.

When an LLM operates on language, you can’t rely on signatures to catch evil. With language, there are a near infinite number of ways to get a point across. It’s the subtlety of language and understanding that makes this so much more complicated.

Who would have thought that you could make a model less prone to bad behavior by telling it that cheating was acceptable in certain contexts? 

It’s one of those “wtf” moments from Anthropic’s recent study on emergent misalignment (aka bad behavior) when models learn the concepts of reward hacking, which is another way of saying they find ways to cheat to accomplish their goals.

What kind of bad behavior? Oh, just things like lying to the user, sabotaging research, cooperating with hackers, and framing colleagues…just those little things.

Take, for example, this terrifying example of how the model really feels about humans:

The good news is that Anthropic’s research is finding ways to mitigate these behaviors, like the concept of inoculation prompting. This is a technique where they tell the model it’s okay to reward hack in certain situations. When they did, they found it helped reduce misalignment by up to 90%.

Agents are growing up so quickly 🥲 

They’re progressing through the major agent milestones, delivering solid design patterns that bring efficiency and ultimately ROI.

Agent ->  LLM: the first major unlock. Think of this in the realm of coding agents. This was the most widely adopted use before we even realized it was a use case.

Agent -> tools: like human advancement, when we connected agents with tools, we started to unlock helpful capabilities. This is where we can go from chatbots to helpful assistants that take action on our behalf. This is also where we start to get nervous about negative outcomes that surface when agents get compromised or go rogue.

Agent -> agent: The social network effect in full force. This helps take agents from generalists to specialists. Multi-agent systems are the future, and it’s the way that companies will find they can unlock the major benefits of AI. This, of course, brings more complexity and security concerns that need to be addressed.

Security shouldn’t stop you from loading a cat meme.

That’s Perplexity’s philosophy when it comes to AI browsers…okay, I paraphrased it a bit. They just released a blog post on their new BrowseSafe defense-in-depth architecture. It includes:

▶️ 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: when the browser (or any connected tool) retrieves web content, a parallel detection pipeline is triggered.

▶️ 𝗛𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: detection classifiers for “high-throughput scanning” look for prompt injection. If something is flagged, it is routed to “slower, reasoning-based frontier LLMs” for deeper analysis.

▶️ 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀: when new threats reach the deeper analysis, they’re flagged to create new synthetic data to improve the layer-1 detection models. This creates a learning loop for continuous improvement.

Even with their improvements, they’re still finding some prompt injection attacks sneak by.

The most successful tactics?

1️⃣ 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀: using multiple languages or indirect hypothetical framing has the largest impact on detection capabilities. Perplexity equated this to models overrelying on English triggers for detection.

2️⃣ 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: prompt injection hidden in the page, such as in HTML comments or data attributes, was easier to detect. They found that the hardest-to-detect attacks were embedded directly in text or elements that appeared on the page.

3️⃣ 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝗻: Detection accuracy dropped from 90% to 81% when adding in “benign command-like text.” The researchers noted that it suggests models are brittle in their detection capabilities.

A Gartner survey found that 69% of companies believe employees use AI tools at work. This means that 31% of surveyed companies are delusional.

If you don’t think that your employees are using AI tools, whether you approved them or not, you’re not living in the current timeline.

Sure, there are people who aren’t leaning into AI tools on a daily basis, or maybe even ever. But the likelihood of at least one of your employees using AI to support their workload is just as likely as that terrible holiday movie having a happy ending. 

That's why Gartner predicts that by 2030, 40% of global organizations will experience a security or compliance incident from shadow AI use.
