NY1 News (also known as Spectrum News NY1) is a 24-hour local news channel based in New York City, providing comprehensive coverage of news, politics, weather, and community events across the five boroughs. It is particularly known for its focus on hyperlocal stories that affect New York City residents 

As an anchor delivering hourly reports from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) I offered

Real-Time Market Insights: I provided timely, accurate updates on market trends, stock movements, and breaking financial news, which helped viewers make informed investment and business decisions.

Audience Engagement: By being on every hour, I offered consistent, reliable reports, and I built trust and engagement with the New York metro area audience.

Educational Impact: I simplified complex market data, making it understandable for both seasoned investors and the general public, helping viewers stay informed about the economy.

Authority and Credibility: Broadcasting directly from the NYSE added credibility to my reports, positioning me as an authoritative voice on financial markets in one of the most important financial hubs in the world.

AVS TV

AVS, or Asian Variety Show, is a long-running television program that primarily focuses on promoting and showcasing Bollywood films, music, and entertainment to a global audience. Launched in the early 1980s, AVS has been a significant platform for South Asian cinema, particularly Bollywood, offering viewers a mix of film previews, celebrity interviews, music videos, and behind-the-scenes content. It is known for its dedication to covering the latest news and trends from the Bollywood film industry, making it one of the earliest and most influential shows in the space.

Distributed worldwide, including on major platforms like SONY Entertainment Television, AVS has reached a wide audience of South Asians and non-South Asians interested in Bollywood and Indian culture.  

I wrote my own scripts and anchored AVS (Asian Variety Show) for 15 years.  Several impactful outcomes:

Global Audience Reach: As an American Indian anchoring the show, each week, I connected first and second generation Indians, living in the United States and other countries, with a taste of home. 

Content Creation and Control: Writing my own scripts gave me creative control over the messaging and allowed me to reach Bollywood enthusiasts and broader audiences.

Brand and Industry Awareness: By becoming a steady presence on Saturday mornings for 15 years,I helped contextualize upcoming movie releases and positioned AVS as a trusted source for Bollywood news.

Professional Credibility: Managing both scriptwriting and anchoring demonstrated my versatility and expertise in media production, enhancing my credibility as a journalist and a presenter.

Rockefeller Foundation

The Rockefeller Foundation is one of the oldest and most influential philanthropic organizations in the world, founded in 1913 by John D. Rockefeller, Sr., the oil magnate and one of the wealthiest individuals of his time. The Foundation was established with a mission to "promote the well-being of humanity" and has since played a pivotal role in addressing global challenges across multiple sectors, including health, education, agriculture, and social equity.

By directing and producing the series of mini-documentaries for the Rockefeller Foundation's Centennial, I achieved several significant outcomes:

Increased Awareness of the Foundation's Impact: Through these documentaries, I highlighted the lesser-known contributions of the Foundation, such as funding the public health system in America and the development of the yellow fever vaccine. This helped to educate viewers and elevate the Foundation's global contributions, beyond just the Rockefeller brand.

Showcased Global Projects: By sharing stories of the projects the Foundation funded around the world, I demonstrated the breadth of its impact, from public health advancements to initiatives in developing countries. This expanded the public’s understanding of the Foundation’s role in tackling complex global challenges.

Authentic Storytelling: By traveling to Nairobi, Africa, with a production crew, I brought an authentic, on-the-ground perspective to the Foundation’s work, allowing viewers to connect with the stories in a more visceral and human way. This added depth and credibility to the narrative.

The Nasdaq (National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations) is a global electronic marketplace for buying and selling securities, primarily known for being the world's first electronic stock exchange. Established in 1971, it revolutionized stock trading by enabling computerized trading without a physical trading floor, unlike traditional exchanges such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

By researching and hosting interviews with CEOs ringing the opening or closing bell at the Nasdaq Marketsite, I created several key outcomes:

Enhanced Visibility for Nasdaq-Listed Companies: My interviews provided a platform for CEOs to share their company’s stories, milestones, and achievements, thus increasing public awareness and enhancing their brands.

TED Conferences

November 2nd, 2013: I had the distinction of delivering my first TedTalk on the subject of "Re-thinking Failure." I was in good company with Real estate titan Barbara Corcoran, founder of the White House Project Marie Wilson, and Human Rights activist Jimmie Briggs.

My proposal that qualified me was this: We as Indians are masters at shoving important conversations under the rug, and never really 'talking about' stuff that matters. But, real life-impacting change doesn't come about -----until you talk about it. Through talking about and writing about my experiences growing up, I learned recently that I changed the trajectory of another woman's life. Here is the entire talk:

Eyes Wide Open Productions, LLC

In 2009, I took a film production crew to Tamil Nadu, India, to shoot and direct my first feature-length social justice film on curable blindness in children. This means conditions such as cataracts, which are easily curable by Western medicine, but allowed to progress unchecked in India for a whole host of reasons, including poverty. I allied with the Sankara Eye Care Institutions, India, to produce "First Sight" which follows three children as they undergo critical and life-changing eye surgeries.

I oversaw the edit, fundraising and upon completion, marketing of the film. To date, "First Sight" has raised about $11,000 in donations for Sankara.

"First Sight" made its world premiere at the South Asian International Film Festival, presented by HBO in New York City, on Wednesday December 4th, 2013.

PBS Nightly Business Report

PBS Nightly Business Report (NBR) was a long-running, highly respected American television program that provided in-depth coverage of financial and economic news. The show aired on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and primarily focused on delivering insights into the day's most important business events, market trends, and economic developments. It was aimed at investors, business professionals, and viewers interested in understanding the complexities of financial markets and the global economy.

My impact at PBS Nightly Business Report through producing, writing, and appearing as talent for a daily primetime show was significant in several ways:

Elevated Quality of Financial Reporting: By producing and writing packages, I contributed to the high standards of in-depth, well-researched financial news that NBR was known for. My work helped ensure that complex market and economic information was delivered in a clear and accessible way to a wide audience.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., FTI Consulting operates in various industries and offers expertise in areas such as financial advisory, corporate finance, restructuring, litigation consulting, and strategic communications. The firm's clientele includes corporations, law firms, governments, and regulatory agencies.

By serving as executive producer and anchor for FTI Consulting's in-house broadcast channel, I produced several key outcomes:

My  impact in delivering daily live business reports for ABC affiliates, created several significant outcomes:

Expanded Businessweek’s Brand Recognition: By serving as the main liaison between Businessweek and ABC stations, I helped extend the magazine's reach beyond print, positioning it as a trusted brand in daily broadcast news. This likely increased Businessweek's visibility and audience, making it more accessible to viewers who might not typically read the magazine.

Informed Major U.S. Markets: My live reports on ABC affiliates in major cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago brought essential business news to millions of viewers. Each Monday, I share a script to help you have a conversation you're avoiding.

I often sit across the table, sharing with a woman leader the importance of building a personal brand. I see her eyes glaze over. 

In her book, it's a "nice-to-have. Not a must-have."

The best analogy I can make is Tom Cruise.
Today, movies are written with him in mind. 
Why? Because he already built the body of work. His brand sells tickets.

Supporting actors still have to audition. Why? 
They haven't built the body of work (yet). The have yet to brand that sells tickets.

A strong personal brand allows a future employer or client understand the way you think. Cast you as the person to solve problems. Tom Cruise.

Until you build that brand, my colleague Abdurrahman Muni encourages more agency when job hunting. His script after you identified 5 companies with these signals:

1. Posted about growth in the last week
2. Have someone in your target role
3. Recently announced funding or expansion

Send 10 strategic connection requests.

Not "I'd love to connect" garbage.

Script:

"Hi [Name], saw your team's post about [specific challenge]. Dealt with something similar at [Company] when we [brief result]. Would love to share what worked if helpful." 

You're not job searching.

“You changed my thinking. The way I do things.”

That was a former client this week on the phone. 

We’ve become friends since working together. We were getting winter plans together for 2026 and she shared that she spent incredible amounts of time on the road these past few years, and in a moment of reflection, she planned to make changes on how she creates her legacy moving forward.

Who gets her time.
Who gets her attention.

I’m interviewing 300 women between now and the end of the year, vetting for the 8 that will document the way she solves problems. Her personal brand. 

I often hear, “I don’t have time to build a personal brand, the company I have worked for is undergoing a merger, an IPO, a deal.”

She’s busy building someone else’s dream.

I’ve been in business 13 years now, long enough to also interview the women closer to the end of life. I didn’t expect to uncover all the regrets. 

Over 13 years and 100 conversations, I heard

I’m not afraid of being unknown.
I’m afraid of being forgettable.

These are the lessons whispered in moments of deep reflection—the truths that can still change the way we think about our legacy.


👉🏽“I Thought Telling My Story Was Selfish.”

A business owner told me, “My work should speak for itself.”

But as the face of the company--her work, her IP, her way of solving problems was going out the door with her, without her documenting her playbook. Her children wanted nothing to do with the business. 

Reflection: Sharing your story isn’t vanity. It’s service. It teaches others how to solve problems, leveraging your experience.

Try this: Write the lesson you wish your 25-year-old self had known. That’s your next post.

 👉🏽“My Silence Cost Me More Than My Mistakes.”

I work with alot of Indian woman since I'm Indian too. One woman whispered, “I didn’t speak up when I had something worth saying.”

Reflection: Playing small doesn’t protect you—it erases you.

Try this: Speak on one panel. Practice asking questions at your local bookstore book talk. Practice speaking as a muscle, not a miracle.

👉🏽 “I Thought Building a Brand Was About Boasting”
She was a private person. She didn't want to boast. But she is the face of the company.  Who else was going to document how she solves problems with it?

Over our work together she learned:   A brand is how you think about things. It’s education. Not boasting. 

Reflection: Your personal brand is your thinking shared at scale. You never know who is reading and needs to hear your counsel right now.

Try this: Ask three people, “What do I stand for?” Then start sharing that message.


👉🏽The Pattern Beneath All Patterns

After 100 conversations, I came to this conclusion
Every excuse, Every “I'm too busy” pointed to one truth:
We don’t lack time. 
We, as women, lack permission.

Permission to stop and to record our own wisdom while we’re still living it.

Someone, someday, will Google your name.
Make sure they find your voice, not your absence.

I've just returned from hosting a 4-day immersion with clients and former clients in London. The focal point was the Cartier exhibit, featuring 350 pieces from over the years.

Several business women on this trip talked about the act of creating and putting a labor of love out into the world. 
A book. 
A product. 
A community.

But then—-comes the marketing and how that becomes a second job.

I was struck by how savvy the Cartier brothers were in socializing the brand.

The brothers proactively positioned themselves where influence already existed rather than trying to create it from scratch. The brothers didn’t wait for customers to come to Paris. They strategically positioned themselves in the three major centers of wealth and power (Paris, London, New York) and then went directly into the social circles where decisions were made.

Louis cultivated relationships with European elites, Pierre expanded to the US. Jacques Cartier specifically traveled to the 1911 coronation celebration of King George V. He literally traveled to India to meet dozens of potential clients at once.

But here’s the key to how they initially got in: In the 1850s, Princess Mathilde Bonaparte (Napoleon’s niece) purchased a piece from Cartier, which changed the course of the company forever. That one royal purchase from Napoleon’s family gave them credibility with other European aristocracy.

So the pattern was:
👉🏽One influential royal client (Princess Mathilde) created social proof
👉🏽Edward VII became a client while still Prince of Wales (before he had power)
👉🏽When Edward inherited the throne in 1901, he immediately commissioned them to reset inherited Indian jewels
👉🏽For his 1902 coronation, he ordered 27 tiaras and awarded them a Royal Warrant officially making them suppliers to the crown
👉🏽That same year, they opened their London boutique —following the client, not hoping clients would come to them

They positioned themselves as the jeweler of choice BEFORE people came into full power, then were already trusted when those people ascended.

Example script if you are reaching out someone "above your station"

Hi [Name],

I’ve been following your work on [specific project] and really admire how you [specific insight”].

I’m [your name], and I [what you do, but framed in value terms].

I’d love to learn more about how you [specific curiosity that connects your world to theirs]. If you ever have 15 minutes for a quick chat, I’d be grateful for the chance to learn from your experience.

As I’m in the throes of getting clients ready for the TEDx stage, and let’s just say ——there are heated moments around suggested edits.

Where I see clients struggle is mapping their personal stories to new idea, a new mental model or a framework, backed by data or research.

When arguing over an edit, my goal is to maintain a high standard ——not function below it.

But—that doesn’t mean there aren’t times clients push my buttons.

That’s when I lean on Ivy Chan’s advice:
Being “good at arguing” isn’t about winning—it’s about staying in control. And that control doesn’t come from volume or dominance. It comes from the language you use. —Ivy, the founder of Ivy Chan Wellness

The other day, I had offered extensive edits and a client walked away in frustration. I brought her back to the edit table with this phrase

“Let’s Explore This Together.”

It shifts the conversation from “me vs. you” to “us vs. the problem” which was I needed more ‘showing’ versus ‘telling.’ I needed more ‘story’ from her.

Social psychology research suggests that language that suggests working on a shared goal cuts down on resistance. “Let’s explore this together,” signals respect, partnership, and an openness to solutions neither of us may have considered yet.

Yes, I help women in business give compelling talks on a big stage.

But along the way, as we are building her body of work, I’m also sharing this brand of counsel, aggregated from years and years of interviewing CEO’s.

The holiday season is already upon us. Diwali has passed but I just got an invitation for a party Nov 7th. 

I am forever tucking away questions in my Notion doc that I can use. I picked 6 from Kayti Christian's "The Good Trade" and put my own twist on it:

There were some questions that I was like, "Ummm, okay I'm not asking that."

A cocktail party question strikes a good balance between "light" and surfacing something deeper.

👉🏽I'm travelling to Paris next month and I love listening to French, even though I understand very little: What is a language you love to listen to even if you don’t speak or understand it?

👉🏽I'm travelling to Vienna in December and I am desperate to see the Austrian alps. Given a choice: Oceans or mountains? Why?

👉🏽I return to Paris at least once a year. I almost skipped this year but I'm glad I'm not. Where is one place you’d love to travel to again?

👉🏽I get asked this question all the time. I'm named for the Indian goddess of wealth. What does your name mean?

👉🏽I'm in the throes of whiteboarding the outfits for my upcoming trip. What do you wear when you’re feeling your very best, and why?

Arthur Brooks, professor at Harvard and author of the “Happiness Files” shares in a Youtube video that we are a population of rarely bored people anymore.

Why?

Blame it on the smartphone. Anytime we have 15 seconds, we pull out our phones and doom scroll.

The problem with that is we never allow give our brains a break. We never activate a part called the “default mode network” or DMN. With no stimulation, the DMN surfaces the big questions: “Why am I here? What does my life mean?”

It’s uncomfortable. So we choose to ‘numb out’ instead.

Last year, at a mountain getaway Martin Luther King weekend, I challenged myself to put my DMN in charge for the entire weekend.

I put my phone in another room. Much to my surprise, I processed something I wasn’t expecting? I let go of the title “TV anchor” and fully embraced “Business owner.” I’ve been in business 13 years.

It took that long -and no devices— to make this shift.

My Masters in Journalism from Boston University afforded me that. I matriculated with the ability to shoot, edit, and put an entire newscast together.

As I review TEDx applications each day, here are ways most miss the mark.

👉🏽Folks need one crisp, novel idea — not just a motivational message or it’s a theme that is already widely covered in TEDx and self-help talks; it lacks a novel, research-backed angle.

👉🏽There’s no fresh language, science, or method that transforms the insight into a unique, TED-worthy concept — it risks sounding inspirational rather than original

👉🏽To make it TED-ready, what counterintuitive truth you are bringing to the conversation?

👉🏽There isn’t a clear framework or new language. A TEDx talk benefits from a named concept or mental model.

👉🏽What is universal about the idea you are presenting? So anyone outside of your zone of genius can still take action on it the minute he/she walks out of the theater?

This week, I was on a sales call and a woman said to me, “Oh, I can’t attend your virtual salon Monday.”

“Why?”

“It’s Diwali.”

Kids have the day off.

My folks are from West Bengal. We celebrated a different deity (Durga) on a different date. I’m American born, so we observed Santa. Easter Bunny. The tooth fairy.

I feel this gravitational pull to DO something on Diwali.
Sometimes, it feels like an existential crisis.

In Amanda Goetz’ new book “Toxic Grit.“ she talks about all the characters we play, and acknowledging that there is an inherent imbalance at times. Could we stand to explore each and assign times for each to “drive.” Can we can find more balance within ourselves this way?

I’m so stuck in playing ‘business woman,’ I have forgotten these other layers of me that still exist.

I’ve just returned from London, so the 'Explorer' in me got to wander with a new appreciation for the city. I’m a 'Partner' so last night, I sat down and watched an old 1950’s film while Matt made dinner with fresh vegetables and fish from the farmer’s market. When those other characters got some space, my brain started working better. Ideas started showing up as I started writing.

This morning to be quiet, I answered these journal prompts. Even if you don’t celebrate Diwali, they could be of service to you to explore the other 'characters' who live in you.  

👉🏽How can I bring more lightness into my day-to-day—through boundaries, laughter, or simplicity?
👉🏽What parts of me have come alive this year that I want to honor or expand?
👉🏽What brings me a quiet, sustaining joy (not performative joy)?
👉🏽What makes me feel “at home” in myself?

I've successfully done it since I left my "TV" brand and entered into my "business owner" era.

An unexpected way preparing for a TEDxTalk made her life better:

She had left her C-level position last year to stand up her own advisory.
One powerful way she would do that is with her thought leadership.
A TEDxTalk would be a strong credential.

While preparing, she pledged to stop drinking.
Socializing one night, friends pressured her her to have a glass of wine.

"I felt powerless in the moment," she said, painfully aware she was 12 days from stage.

I gave her a script and a rationale:
Most aren't training for something big.
But she was.

She needed to adopt the Olympic athlete mentality with this script: "I"m not drinking today. I have a big day coming up and I need my mind to be clear."

She tried the script when out with friends the following weekend. She said it with so much conviction, her friends didn't pressure her that night.

Rather, she observed them reflecting on their own choices and making different decisions about their drinking that night too.

Later she said, "I think I'm going to use this script more often."

She was preparing for a TEDxTalk.
But in the process, she gained an unexpected tool: A script to keep her back pocket when she needed to set a strong boundary.

Monday Oct 20th, I host "Inside the Red Circle" at 12pm EDT on Zoom. You learn how a TEDx speaker gets ready for her 12 minute talk on stage.

👉🏽Sonal Bhatia, MD will interview a coach for the first 10 minutes so audiences see how he/she thinks through “idea worth spreading.”  

👉🏽Another speaker will "live workshop" a section of her talk live with a coach so the audience can watch the refining process in real time.

Last Monday, we hosted another virtual salon "Inside the Red Circle" ​[Recording here: https://lnkd.in/eD7R3Zt8]​, interviewing 3 ladies about the take the TEDx stage Nov 13th here in New York City. 

Three takeaways:
Seeing Bridgett talk through a TEDx framework gave a greater sense of the process and how a personal story eventually develops into a TED-worthy one
Janet crafted her talk by connecting to her Korean heritage. 
The community of women that has formed around this exercise is amazing.

Wednesday. I passed the “Tick Tock” diner on 34th and 8th Avenue. The establishment has remarkably withstood the winds of change that usually lay victim to restaurants in New York City.

I waxed nostalgic as I stood, peering into the window of the booths, letting the memories wash over me.

It was here that I sat in a diner booth across a table from my first agent who signed me to CNN as a news reporter in 2001. I was at Bloomberg television at the time, reporting from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. CNN was a quantum leap for my career.

The people inside probably thought I was nuts.

But I’m okay with that.

Beth and Bridgett are just 13 days away from stepping onto the TEDx stage.

Monday, November 3rd at 12pm EDT/9am PDT, they’ll be joining me for a special Inside the Red Circle virtual salon on Zoom to share what the prep process has been like.
