I'm a video and events professional who spends most of his time and energy writing.

The most important part of a video on LinkedIn is the text, the narrative that accompanies the video, the question I pose to the speaker and the connections made to a larger conversation.

When I first started this journey my mantra was "tell people something they don't already know". That's still my north star but I've learned that events are also about listening and learning.

Every audience has something to teach you.

I produce webinar and video platforms for a number of organizations. Events I produce draw 500-1000 registrations a week, attract 100-250 live attendees,  thousands of video clip plays weekly and 8-15 partnership discovery meetings a month.

Always looking to connect: ideas to a bigger picture and people with each other.

Information blocking in health IT might be a good business model at the moment. But no company can monopolize innovation.

Can the big legacy EHRs evolve to gobble up the Health AI market? A lot of people seem to think so.

Not so fast said the panelists during an event last year. In this exchange between Vince Kuraitis, Jim Sabogal, Girish Muralidharan and Tomaz Gornik you'll get a well rounded view of the arguments and nuances surrounding this question.

And it's a good time to feature this conversation for two reasons:

🌑  Many assume that Epic is some kind of Death Star approaching the rebel base at Yavin and that the health AI startup market will be obliterated by its Ion Cannon.

Health AI innovators - don't just model disease, model the human system.

I asked Manuj Agarwal two questions here: 

What's the difference between treating the patient versus treating the disease? 

What can health AI innovators take away from that?

Most healthcare interventions have traditionally been tracked to driving incremental improvements on time honed KPIs.

There's a lot of reasons for that and I don't counsel you to completely ignore it. 

Jim Sabogal would make a face at me if I did.

But sometimes chasing a KPI can blind you to the bigger opportunities surrounding it.

And I'm thinking of the early stage founders who attend my webinars here. A lot of them aren't married to a KPI yet but are window shopping for the ring.

I have a pet peeve with health AI startup founder origin stories. I call it "Health Tech Batman".

Something tragic happened so they started a company.

And the narrative stops there. 

Nothing to contextualize complex information and guide people through change.

Health Tech Batman punches out the pain point like its the Joker and then disappears into the night.

To me this is totally backwards. 

I want to know what happens to the nameless innocents after Health Tech Batman saves them from the Joker not what motivated him to do it in the first place.

I confessed my pet peeve to Marcos Irigaray (featured) a healthcare marketing expert and to his credit he didn't laugh at me.

He gave me some great advice, the narrative should be centered around the people being served and their needs not the founders motivations.

Having a compelling founder origin story is fine but its a big problem if that's the only narrative you are presenting.

I asked Jasmin Hundal, M.D.,DipABLM, M.S., M.P.H a question I normally avoid... to future cast.

Perhaps I shouldn't be so shy , this has become one of my favorite clips. And I find myself citing it frequently.

And it's the perfect lead up to today's Health Data and New Models of Care: Use Cases event that I am producing on behalf of SenzMate.

I'm trying a new approach. Giving use case presenters more support before and during the event than I have previously and baking that support into my process. I did this last month with Achi Kushnir and the results were fantastic so I'm making it standard practice now.

We have one "normal" panelist for this event, a health data Obi-Wan.

Andy Meiner will speak for ten minutes and then hand out light sabers to our young Jedi's:

Valerie Peterson, Sahira Janeir Garazatúa, RIcardo Jorge Baptista, Anthony Lawton, Martina Meyer zu Selhausen and Sudha Regmi will be presenting use cases.

Expect a wide array of domains to be discussed from mental health, lifestyle medicine, elder care and more.

Fredrik Lindén, our second speaker, I worked with in a different way than I normally do. I conducted a pre webinar research interview with him. He taught me what I needed to know to produce this event. And he'll also be on hand during the event to support the use cases presenters with questions and advice.

As will Ruban Kanapathippillai and Miller Alexander Rajendran.

This dovetails with SenzMate's ambitions, to turn the Connecting the Future series into a platform where healthcare innovators are comfortable coming forward to speak and share what they are building.

Previously we opened up the floor to use case presenters in afterparties but the results were sometimes mixed. Not because people didn't want to share their use cases.

They need time to prepare and a little support from me.

So that's what I'm committed to doing now.

There's a confluence of factors driving healthcare technology to an interconnected ecosystem with individuals controlling their data in some way.

What that looks like is still up in the air.

I started off by asking Fredrik Lindén about what digital wallets and the EU's new data mean for Health AI developers and he immediately expanded the question.

This isn't just about Europe, these are global trends that are converging.

Fredrik explains what has been driving this and where it is going.

One big theme he advances is the individual as the point of integration of healthcare data. Something which we've also had Marc W. Haddle speak powerfully to in some recent events as well. 

A concept with powerful supporting arguments but not without it's detractors.

I started exploring this last year in "Platform Shift: What is Beyond EHRs?" with Vince Kuraitis, Girish Muralidharan, Tomaz Gornik and Jim Sabogal.

Every once in a while I connect disparate dots. I'm getting that feeling again with connected devices, AI, lifestyle medicine and preventative care.

It started with talking to pioneering oncologists Manuj Agarwal and Jasmin Hundal, M.D.,DipABLM, M.S., M.P.H who have incorporated wearables data into their practices.

Another dot was Rachel Dunscombe who spoke to using health data to enable new business models of care.

Then came Bhupinder D. who spoke to mature IT management of the vast and often mismanaged mass of connected devices in healthcare and what it enables.

Last week I spoke to Eric J. Daza, DrPH, MPS (featured in video) who spoke to me about n-of-1 methodologies (a population size of 1) and the kinds of questions it answers.

And just today Girish Muralidharan posted an article where he contends that AI, data governance and "clinical ops" now sit inside reimbursement strategy and how connected devices collecting data will play a central role but a shift in thinking is needed.

The threads I'm seeing:

🧐 Reimagined care delivery (from episodic event driven data collection and reactive to continuous and proactive) 

🤔 Mature IT management of connected devices incorporating AI and commercial strategy (and possibly a more consultative service model)

🤓 New methodologies, personalized for individuals. 

I have no predictions, only more questions but I definitely see a trail of threads converging and am confident that they will gel into something.

These events are very lively, I'm expecting 200 people to attend live and thousands to watch the clips. We'll be featuring use cases from several innovators as well as expert commentary and operational takeaways that you can apply in your own projects.

"How do we redesign healthcare for the next generation" Andy Meiner (featured) opened yesterday's event with our why.

He cited Rachel Dunscombe "Digital transformation is not the goal, the goal is better care. Technology is simply the enabler."

The central theme that Andy introduced (and which other speakers picked up on)  was two pronged: enabling infrastructure is needed (data and governance) but not enough, we also need the creativity to re-imagine care, not just incrementally improve it.

Andy was our only conventional panelist during the event. He was followed by innovators presenting use cases: Valerie Peterson, Martina Meyer zu Selhausen, Sudha Regmi, Sahira Janeir Garazatúa and Anthony Lawton.

Every use case presenter presented a novel angle: elders care, risk stratification, lifestyle medicine, preventative mental health and healthcare change management.

Fredrik Lindén, Ruban Kanapathippillai, Miller Alexander Rajendran, Nimal V., Brian M. Green and Bart De Witte provided commentary.

The afterparty following this webinar was very lively with opinions contested in a productive and good natured way.

Lastly I'll never stop thanking Tharmakulasingam Jeyjenthan and Pabodi Jayathilake at SenzMate for their vision and trust and partnership. 

I've been producing events for them for over a year now and I'm constantly impressed by the goodwill and support they give health AI innovators. They give with no strings attached.

If you're innovating and building in health AI you don't need to do it alone. I recommend reaching out, I'm happy to organize a free consultation with myself and Miller Alexander Rajendran to give you advice and support what you are building.

The strongest objection to digital wallets and giving patients control of their health data is confusion, exclusion and the burden of responsibility.

So I gently played devil's advocate with Fredrik Lindén (featured) a powerful advocate for digital wallets for healthcare.

His argument is powerful but I have some reservations with it.

Make it easy, use familiar interfaces on tools people already use (he cites mobiles) and show what is in it for them immediately.

That jives with my experience. 

Fredrik cites guidelines and personalized medicine as one source of immediate benefit. 

Medicine is governed by guidelines, a vetted source of treatment recommendations that sit between practicing clinicians and the hundreds of thousands of published research.

What does this mean for digital wallets?

Patients using digital wallets may immediately notice that their treatment becomes more personalized.

This could be a powerful source of positive feedback turning patients with personal control of their health data into advocates.

But before we pop the cork on the champagne there are some challenges.

The infrastructure isn't here yet.

The AI curation of medical guidelines that Fredrik cites in this video is here...sort of.

But the tools are still in their infancy and largely incomplete.

And the infrastructure, design, marketing and communication for patient control of their data still has years to go and serious hurdles in its path.

There is also the question of exclusion.

Making mobile phones mandatory for this level of healthcare access also raises questions of exclusion for many who can't navigate touch screens (and with urgent healthcare needs).

And there are also serious questions about managing consent which I will explore in a future post and not go into here.

We took a chance and it paid off. I'm still basking in the afterglow of this event.

The chance was surrendering control to the audience and giving them  support in presenting their use cases.

Andy Meiner kicked off the event with the challenge, the opportunity and what is at stake with health data.

Valerie Peterson "stress shows up in the body first" presented a use case of personalized, proactive mental health care using passive monitoring to flag issues for patients for patients before they mushroom into problems.

Martina Meyer zu Selhausen spoke to brain health, combating brain fog and preventing alzheimers with a pre release of her new platform and gave us all great tips on keeping our brains healthy as we age.

Sudha Regmi presented several use cases of AI in elders care with a very useful framework for diagnosis and forecasting. She ended with a powerful message, the potential is enormous but the limiting factor is implementation.

Sahira Janeir Garazatúa talked to using AI analysis of images moving through clinical workflows not for diagnosis but for risk stratification and referral in high risk cases. And she spoke to the implementation challenges in both a American and European context.

Anthony Lawton spoke to healthcare leadership and change management and the enormous benefit of using AI to collate the feedback and experiences of healthcare workers in a way that senior leadership can interrogate and obtain insight.

Fredrik Lindén (to whom I owe huge debt in helping me prepare for this webinar), Ruban Kanapathippillai and Miller Alexander Rajendran supported our speakers with advice, follow up questions and commentary.

Nimal V. kicked off our afterparty into high gear with some provocative (and welcome) commentary that ignited discussion.

Brian M. Green came forward to give us additional context and highlighted the governance needed to support these innovations to scale up.

Bart De Witte was a powerful advocate of open source solutions and pointed out that the European digital wallet rose comes with a few thorns.

I'm still digesting what this all means. I tend to be a little distracted while running the event and don't properly get a handle on it and formulate my own thoughts until after I've edited it down into clips and had a chance to rewatch and reflect.

But I can safely say that I loved it. That is easily one of my favourite webinars ever.

The format was an experiment and I'm ready to call it a success.

Despite competing with HIMMS (25-35 thousand attendees) we drew 140 live viewers (normally these events draw 170-250).

The small hit in live attendance doesn't bother me. I learned so much at this event and had a great time. If you were there I hope you did too.

Healthcare Webinars and Video | Frequently says “I know a guy who...”

Our jobs are more than a series of tasks, there's an animating purpose which often gets buried under the weight of KPIs piled on top of them.

Chris Hemphill (featured) makes the case for connecting people with their underlying purpose in health AI implementations.

His advice rings true for me, one meta theme that has captured my interest this year is "when do you toggle between the deterministic (numbers and simple logical rules) and the heuristic (intuition and narrative)".

You need to do both, you can't stay locked in one or the other forever without something going wrong.

If you're purely deterministic (focusing on numerical KPIs, rules and tasks) its easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. And when things go wrong, you won't understand why "line went down".

And conversely "vibes only" will eventually send you off course in different ways.

Use both gears, and cultivate the judgment for when you need to switch from one to another.

Protecting your IP when partnering was raised by the audience in a recent event.

This is a tricky question, most health tech startups have a secret sauce they are keeping close to their chest.

And it can't always be protected when negotiating with partners.

Ralf-Gordon Jahns, the head of Research2Guidance and a health tech partnership Obi Wan gives some sage advice here.

Andrea Jester chimes in, some level of risk is unavoidable when starting a business,  you have to decide what level of risk is acceptable.

I hosted a coversation on AI governance yesterday that focused on the "boring stuff".

Governance and corporate maturity is the biggest growth lever for tech startups in 2026.

And it pains me to say that because I'm a marketer for hire.

Achieving and demonstrating that maturity is unlocking tremendous growth right now.

I've noticed that businesses with ISO certifications don't need to spend a lot of money on marketing. 

Whereas startups operating in hero mode can struggle to find clients even with massive marketing efforts.

I can see why when I sit in partnership meetings when customers meet with tech vendors for the first time. The number one criteria they are judging tech startups on is risk.

And they don't normally come out and say it but if you listen carefully its the subtext behind most of the questions they ask.

Fancy footwork won't save you here, if you lack maturity and governance as  a tech vendor your clients will know.

Chasing shiny objects and losing sight of the foundationals will have you chasing your own tail in today's market.

Most AI projects fail, businesses are falling behind.

Because they're chasing the wrong thing and ignoring what it takes to succeed and that which separates winners and losers.

Governance and maturity.

This is what I do, guide small businesses operating in hero mode towards ISO certifications that mature them as businesses so they run smoother and win more contracts.

ISO certifications pay for themselves several times over immediately in the new business you sign.

Win more business and increase the value of the deliverables you provide.

Because now you're not just exporting work product or services, you are embedding them inside governance systems that your clients can use themselves.

And I hate to say it but ISO 42001 is the best marketing.

It pains me to say that because I'm a marketer.

But I hate to see companies blow big wads of cash on legacy marketing tactics when there are foundational things missing from their companies.

That's like pouring water into a bucket that has a hole in the bottom.

What I've learned over the past six months is that marketing only gets you so far.

Marketing gets you the first meeting.

What happens during that first meeting? The prospects wants to know one thing now "Are you a source of risk?"

Marketing won't save you here.

Scott is a partner with cybersecurity services provider Invicta Solutions Group and talks us through his journey.

The striking (but not surprising) thing is how quickly Invicta snapped up new clients off of the back of their ISO certifications.

Maturity = exponential growth during technological paradigm shifts. We've seen it before in the early 90s.

And history is repeating itself now.

In today's market with everyone chasing the latest shiny object in AI the boring fundamentals are often ignored by small businesses.

But your customers aren't ignoring it during your sales meetings.

They probably don't come out and say it but have you noticed that the subtext to half their questions is "are you a source of risk for us?"

Get ISO certified, get mature, become a safe pair of hands and demonstrate that with an internationally recognized standard.

Most small businesses never do this. And I get it, it's a nightmare to do it on your own.

But you don't have to go it alone.
