Diary of a Cold Caller : Why 80% of Your Pipeline is Already Dead

Early in my sales career I thought the best closers were the ones who could seal it on the first call.

Slick. Sharp. One and done.

I was wrong.

The best salespeople I've ever watched work aren't the flashiest on the first call. They're the ones you see still in the game on contact seven, eight, nine. Still relevant. Still adding value. Still there.

The numbers back this up completely.

48% of salespeople never follow up at all. Another 25% try once and walk away. By contact three, 85% of your competition has already left the building.

And yet:

80% of sales are made between the fifth and twelfth contact.

Let that land for a second.

The vast majority of revenue in sales is sitting in the follow up that most people never do. It's not hidden. It's not complicated. It's just consistency, which turns out to be the rarest skill in the game.

One call closes exist. They're great when they happen. But building a career on them is like building a business on luck.

The pipeline that feeds you long term is the one you nurture. The prospect who said not now in January and yes in April because you stayed present, stayed useful, stayed in touch.

Follow up isn't chasing. It's farming.
