I've been a partner at 2 firms and founded (and am growing) my own firm. I have personally seen the many changes within a law firm and the effects they can have on a law practice.

In that role, I counsel lawyers and law firms on risk management, law firm structuring, partnership agreements, employment agreements, lateral moves, separation agreements, law firm dissolutions, attorney fee disputes, employment issues, ethics advice, and buying, selling, or closing a practice.

Her father told her to be a paralegal.

She ended up arguing before the US Supreme Court — with him carrying her briefcase.
Laurie Webb Daniel grew up watching her father work as a prominent trial lawyer in Atlanta. When she was in college and asked if she should pursue law, he said no. 

Laurie's response, to herself: that's exactly what I'm going to be.

She waited tables for two years after college. Saved her money. Got her law degree. Ended up, through a series of circumstances, practicing alongside that same father at a 10-lawyer litigation boutique in Atlanta.

They had a case that produced a mixed result . Laurie saw a long-shot cert petition. She pushed for it. And it was granted.

And when the question came of who would argue it before the Supreme Court — it was her.

"Dad carried my briefcase into the US Supreme Court." He had changed his mind about women in the courtroom by then. And he became one of her greatest mentors.

Laurie went on to spend 28 years at BigLaw, head up its appellate team nationally, and eventually launch her own appellate boutique — now nationally ranked and expanding across the Southeast.

The "goddamn female woman lawyer," indeed.

Change the name on day one.

Not after year one. Not in a staggered rebrand. Day one.

He learned this the hard way — a slower rollout creates ambiguity, and ambiguity erodes client confidence exactly when you need to be building it. 

When the previous owner is still in the office and the name's already changed, clients hear: "Something changed, and your CPA is still here." That's a manageable message.
